"Uh, you all go ahead and eat. I'll take my leave first!" Huo Yaojun said as he hung up the clean clothes and put on his jacket, preparing to head to the Youth Commune.
"Hey, Captain Huo! You've been busy all day; why not stay for a meal before you go?"
Ever since Yu Suihuan noticed the similarities between Huo Yaojun and Yang Qinghe, she had felt somewhat uneasy, but she was doing her best to suppress it.
"No, I’ll eat later!" Huo Yaojun smiled gently at Yu Suihuan, his eyes filled with warmth.
"Captain Huo, please stay for a meal. Just do it for this old woman’s sake!" Grandma quickly came out to persuade him when she saw Huo Yaojun about to leave.
This whole family of women would inevitably need to trouble him in the future. As the saying goes, having more friends means more paths. Building connections now is better than having to pay up later when something comes up.
"Grandma, you flatter me. I guess I’ll trouble you then!" Huo Yaojun replied politely, clearly well-mannered.
Eating with such a large family for the first time felt quite strange to him. Although this family had little blood relation, they were close-knit and supportive of one another. The atmosphere was genuinely warm and inviting—so much more than his own cold and unfeeling home.
His mother was his father's second wife; his ex-wife had left him with a son and a daughter. Those siblings had secretly tried to trip him up in many ways, and he was well aware of it.
He hadn’t told either of his parents about these issues. Their relationship had long since deteriorated, and he didn’t want to add fuel to the fire or become the last straw that broke their marriage.
Originally, it was supposed to be his ex-wife's older brother who came down to the countryside. Huo Yaojun could no longer tolerate such a twisted family dynamic, which was why he volunteered to take his brother-in-law’s place.
Because of this decision, his mother had exploded in anger, believing he was being unambitious and weak, allowing himself to be bullied by others.
Only he knew how much he longed to escape from this suffocating home that felt almost unbearable.
After dinner, Yu Suihuan and Li Xiuzhen saw Huo Yaojun off. Once Huo Yaojun had left, Li Xiuzhen turned to Yu Suihuan.
"Yu Suihuan, you go ahead. I'll take Jian Jun for a walk!"
Yu Suihuan, understanding the situation, didn’t say much or ask any questions. Wang Jianjun had just gone through something difficult, and his mood was certainly not great. It was best for Li Xiuzhen to take him out for a bit; their marital issues were not something she wanted to interfere with.
The night air was a bit chilly as Li Xiuzhen helped Wang Jianjun put on his coat and pushed him along as they walked. The two of them moved quietly, neither saying a word.
The village hadn’t changed much since they first arrived; only the people had transformed. Wang Jianjun had thought that losing a leg wouldn’t matter too much—after all, he still had his hands. With a small child needing care, he figured that once the child grew up and didn’t need him anymore, he could find some work and support the family somehow.
But he was too optimistic. To others, he had already become someone who could only drag women down. Since he was seen as useless, he felt the need to prove his worth in whatever small way he could, at least by doing something for the three of them.
"Li Xiuzhen," he said, "let's go check out the area near Hei Dou's house!"
"Why do that? It's bad luck! Just listen to me!"
Li Xiuzhen wasn’t a masochist; she didn’t want Wang Jianjun’s mood to affect her own either.
"Li Xiuzhen, be obedient! I really want to see it!"
"Fine, I don’t know how your mind works!"
With a playful shove from Li Xiuzhen, they circled around Hei Dou’s house before finally heading back home.
