Even though it was the New Year, when she returned to Jiang Chen's home, it wasn't to catch up with Zhou Rongli, but rather to show off.
Zhou Rongli took it all in stride; after all, Aunt Chu had always been a vain person who loved to brag. Now that her life had improved, she naturally wanted to share her wealthy lifestyle with others. This mindset was understandable, and Zhou Rongli knew Chu Mei's character well enough not to take offense.
“Aunt Chu,” Jiang Lu called out shyly. She had no fondness for Aunt Chu, nor did she have any affection for Aunt Chu's daughter, Wang Duoduo. After all, they hadn't seen each other in years, and Wang Duoduo, having grown up in a privileged environment, had always been proud and aloof. Their conversations never seemed to connect, leaving their relationship distant and merely polite.
“I heard from your mother that you just returned from Europe. Your mom really splurged on you, spending a whole month there must have cost quite a bit. By the way, is this your boyfriend?” Chu Mei said with a smile as she looked at Jiang Lu and Jiang Chen.
“It's not too bad. Aunt Chu, this is my newly recognized older brother, Jiang Chen,” Jiang Lu introduced.
“Older brother? Oh, good!” Chu Mei looked at Jiang Chen with a condescending smile, thinking to herself that he was probably just a boyfriend. He didn't seem impressive and appeared too shy to admit it.
“Hello, Aunt Chu!” Although Jiang Chen didn't have a good first impression of Chu Mei, he still maintained his politeness.
“Brother, let me take you to the kitchen to meet my mom!” Jiang Lu pulled Jiang Chen into the kitchen.
“Mom, this is Jiang Chen!” Once inside the kitchen, Jiang Lu immediately introduced him.
“Mom, thank you for all the dishes! Do you need any help?” Jiang Chen said as he saw Zhou Rongli, feeling quite positive about her.
“Xiao Chen, you're here! I heard from Xiao Lu that you recognized an older brother; I'm so happy. You're a guest; how can I ask you to help? Xiao Lu, take your brother to watch TV; I'll be done shortly,” Zhou Rongli replied quickly.
“Brother, you don't need to be polite; this isn't work for you. Go watch TV; I can help here with my mom,” Jiang Lu said with a smile as she pushed Jiang Chen out of the kitchen.
Meanwhile, the Jiang Bao family chatted casually with Chu Mei in the living room. As for Jiang Chen, he didn't watch TV either; like other young people, he sat in a chair playing on his phone.
It wasn't that he wanted to play on his phone; rather, he had nothing to talk about with Aunt Chu. The little status she boasted about was something he could only dream of in his past life, but in this life, it simply didn't stir any emotions within him. Hearing her self-satisfied tone made him shake his head internally.
The atmosphere for the Jiang Bao family was also quite awkward; they weren't used to boasting and didn't really have anything worth bragging about.
“So, what does your adopted son do? Is he still studying or working somewhere?” Chu Mei asked.
“He's working in Shanghai, I believe,” replied the Jiang Bao family with a smile.
“What kind of job does he have? I've heard that these years it's tough for university graduates to find jobs and that salaries are low. But in a big city like Shanghai, earning ten thousand a month should be manageable,” said Chu Mei, smiling.
“Uh, roughly speaking; we haven't asked too much about the specifics,” answered the Jiang Bao family. He truly didn't know much about his adopted son since it was his daughter who had recognized him.
“Oh, it's tough to settle down in Shanghai. Buying a house there isn't easy at all; it probably takes at least ten years just to save up for a down payment. You seem quite open-minded about it; buying a Passat is still decent—two hundred thousand! After all, you can't buy a house in Shanghai, so why not enjoy having a car instead? But this Passat, honestly, doesn’t have much prestige. My family has an A8 now and thinks it's not classy enough; they're looking to switch to a Bentley,” said Chu Mei, her words dripping with an air of showing off.
