Old Lu stood at a distance, observing everything. Refining Qi was inherently a practice that avoided disturbances, and practitioners typically sought out quiet places to engage in it. However, the little brat insisted on being here, and Old Lu didn’t stop him. Sometimes breaking the norm could be a good thing, especially since Mo Wen’s reasoning was peculiar yet persuasive—he simply liked this place.
“Calm your mind and steady your heart. Remain unperturbed by change. Free from desire and attachment, without abandonment or self, act without intention.” Just as Mo Wen felt anxious, he heard Old Lu’s voice. Without time to ponder, he adjusted his state and once again entered that wondrous sensation. The first thread of Lingqi began to flow into his acupoints, followed by more acupoints autonomously absorbing the free Lingqi. The entire process was calm and gentle, unlike the astonishing phenomena described in novels. The first step of guiding Qi into the body was successful, though it was merely the beginning.
Next came the Refining Qi stage. If the Lingqi drawn into the body was not refined in time, it would dissipate. Mo Wen sensed the Lingqi swirling chaotically within him and hurriedly activated his Kung Fu to refine it. The erratic Lingqi began to soften, and the refined energy started to gather in his Dan Tian. Guided by his Kung Fu, it flowed upward into the Middle Dan Tian and continued rising into the Upper Dan Tian. As Mo Wen circulated his Kung Fu to guide the refined energy throughout his body, he noticed that this energy diminished during its journey and ultimately vanished. After several attempts with similar results, he wondered if he had failed. He needed to consult Old Lu.
“That’s normal,” Old Lu said while stroking his beard after hearing Mo Wen’s description. “The refined energy is absorbed by your body to strengthen it; that is the purpose of Refining Qi. Haven’t you noticed that you are stronger than before?”
Upon hearing Old Lu’s words, Mo Wen finally relaxed his anxious heart and felt that indeed he had become much stronger.
“Old Lu, does our previous agreement still stand?”
“Of course it does; an old man’s word is like gold.”
“Then… does that mean…”
“You’re still far from it; this is just the beginning. Whether you can master Nine Cauldrons Nine Tripods remains uncertain. Don’t rush to collect on promises; you can come back once you’ve mastered it.”
“When will I know I’ve mastered it?”
“When your body no longer absorbs refined energy and the Qi in your Dan Tian stops increasing.”
In the days that followed, aside from hunting, cooking, and sleeping, Mo Wen spent all his remaining time sitting on a large rock by the riverbank, practicing Taiyi Nerve every day. He felt that his Qi had reached eight cauldrons and eight tripods, and his body’s absorption of Qi had significantly decreased. He still had a considerable distance to go before achieving Nine Cauldrons Nine Tripods as per his bet with Old Lu. Feeling that continuing in this manner lacked meaning, he stood up and left the riverbank.
Back at the wooden cabin, Old Lu was grilling meat by the fire pit. Ever since tasting Mo Wen’s grilled meat, Old Lu had begun to doubt his own culinary skills; with each meal he consumed, this doubt grew larger. For the sake of his appetite, he felt compelled to improve his cooking skills but couldn’t bring himself to ask Mo Wen for help. Instead, he decided to learn by stealth. Today, with Mo Wen out, he attempted to cook on his own but spat out a mouthful after tasting it and shook his head. When he saw Mo Wen returning, he immediately put on an expression of satisfaction with his culinary skills.
“You need to fight; combat will continuously consume your inner strength and allow it to recover in a cycle that refines your power. There are plenty of beasts in the mountains; go find them yourself but avoid those you cannot handle,” Old Lu said as he wiped his mouth with his sleeve after hearing Mo Wen's concerns.
