"I don't want to be a star. The money I've earned over the past few years is enough for me to live on," Lin Bingbing said.
"Our family's expenses are high, and your brother and younger brother are both getting married. We only have one villa, which is simply not enough. You need to buy each of them a place," Lin Bingbing's mother replied.
Hearing this, Lin Bingbing suddenly looked up. She wanted to argue but ultimately just said lightly, "If you want to live in a villa, then go earn the money yourself. Anyway, I have no more roles to play and no money to make."
Lin Bingbing felt helpless and deeply pained; her family seemed like leeches, unwilling to stop until they had drained her dry.
"How can you say that? Our whole family is counting on you! We scrimped and saved to raise you, and you don't understand gratitude? Tell me, what job pays as well as being a star? If you weren't so willful and had signed with the company, you could easily earn tens of millions or even a hundred million a year," Lin Bingbing's mother said, somewhat angrily.
Lin Bingbing forced a smile, too tired to explain.
"If you don't want to act anymore, then marry into a wealthy family. The biggest aristocratic family in Yulu City is the Shi family. I know that one of their young masters is very fond of you. Tomorrow, I'll take you to meet him," Lin Bingbing's mother announced.
"Mom, how could you even think of that? I'm not interested in marrying into a wealthy family, and I won't meet that young master from the Shi family," Lin Bingbing replied, exasperated.
"This isn't up to you. I've already arranged for you to meet young master Shi. You can't stand him up. You know how significant the Shi family is in Yulu City; even if you're a top star, you can't afford to offend them—let alone now that you're planning to leave the entertainment industry," Lin Bingbing's mother said in an undeniable tone.
Lin Bingbing felt a headache coming on; she knew her mother's stubbornness all too well. It was pointless to argue further, so she decided not to defend herself.
"Mom, please leave for now. I need some time alone," Lin Bingbing said as she pushed her mother out of the room and closed the door. Born into such a patriarchal family, she felt trapped. After all, family ties are hard to sever; her mother was still her mother.
In her room, Lin Bingbing felt incredibly frustrated. She couldn't even say she hated this family anymore; she had grown accustomed to it.
That evening, feeling bored and depressed with no one to talk to, she decided to open her computer and video chat with a few close friends. Talking with them helped lighten her mood a bit.
Upon hearing about Lin Bingbing's situation, her friends began to chime in with their thoughts on Lin Bingbing's mother.
"By the way, Bingbing, why don't you just tell your mom that you have a boyfriend?" Li Ruoxi suggested.
"I don't have a boyfriend!" Lin Bingbing rolled her eyes in disbelief.
"What about Jiang Chen? Don't you like him?" Li Ruoxi asked.
"I do like Jiang Chen, but he doesn't like me back. Besides, I feel like I don't deserve him at all; I have no confidence around him. He probably has already forgotten about me," Lin Bingbing's tone suddenly turned melancholic.
"Don't sell yourself short! You're so beautiful and famous; how could Jiang Chen not like you? I've got a tip for you: just go straight to his house and charm his mother first! When you have free time, make sure to show your future mother-in-law some extra kindness," Li Ruoxi said with a laugh.
