"That's such a pity," Li Ruoxi expressed her regret.
Suddenly, a ringtone echoed through the air; it was Lin Bingbing's phone.
"Bingbing, who is it? It can't be Jiang Chen, can it?" Li Ruoxi and the others asked curiously.
"I don't know. It's a number from the capital; it's probably a sales call," Lin Bingbing said, declining to answer and hanging up immediately.
She had changed her number, and aside from a few people, no one in the capital knew it, so Lin Bingbing couldn't be bothered to pick up.
Not long after she hung up, her phone rang again.
Lin Bingbing frowned slightly and pressed the answer button.
"Hello, is this Lin Bingbing, Miss Lin?" A voice on the other end sounded somewhat familiar.
"Who are you?" Lin Bingbing became cautious, fearing it might be someone from her former company looking for trouble.
"I'm Zhang Li," the voice replied warmly.
"You... you're Director Zhang?" Lin Bingbing was taken aback; no wonder the voice sounded familiar. As an actress, how could she not know Zhang Li, the renowned director?
Lin Bingbing felt a bit nervous and awkward; after all, he was a senior figure in the industry, but she was also puzzled.
"Director Zhang, what can I do for you?"
"Well, there's a movie coming up, and we'd like to invite you to be the female lead," Director Zhang said with respect. After all, she was the actress specifically chosen by the film's investor. Although Jiang Chen hadn't explicitly mentioned Lin Bingbing's identity, Director Zhang could sense his concern.
"You want me to be the female lead? It can't be that new movie with a hundred billion investment, right?" Lin Bingbing was utterly astonished; just moments ago, she and her friends had been discussing this very project.
"Yes, that's the one," Director Zhang replied with a smile.
"But I didn't audition; how could I be cast as the female lead?" Lin Bingbing was confused.
Director Zhang was also surprised; he hadn't expected Lin Bingbing to be unaware of this. Was Mr. Jiang trying to give her a surprise?
"Miss Lin, do you know Mr. Jiang?" Director Zhang asked.
"Mr. Jiang? You mean Jiang Chen? Is he the one who wants me as the female lead?" Lin Bingbing's realization came quickly; her tone became urgent and excited, filled with indescribable joy.
"Your number is what Mr. Jiang gave me, so of course it's him. He must want to surprise you," Director Zhang chuckled.
"Thank you, Director Zhang! When does filming start?" Lin Bingbing asked eagerly, shaking off her earlier gloom.
"In about half a month. Before that, we need to sign a contract. Since you don't have an agent right now, I'll sign directly with you. Your salary will be double what you received before," Director Zhang explained.
"I don't want any payment," Lin Bingbing said.
"Uh, really?" Director Zhang was taken aback.
"Of course," Lin Bingbing replied, feeling quite exhilarated. This meant that Jiang Chen had not forgotten her, and that alone was enough.
As for money, how could Lin Bingbing accept Jiang Chen's? The last time the company wanted her to do a kissing scene, she had firmly refused. The company demanded she pay a hefty penalty of several hundred million, which she could never afford. Later, when Jiang Chen found out about it, he helped her cover the cost. She couldn't possibly repay him; although Jiang Chen didn't mind at all, Lin Bingbing felt too embarrassed to ask for his money again.
"Alright then, Miss Lin. When do you have time? We can meet to discuss the role," Director Zhang said.
"Director Zhang, I have plenty of time. I'll come find you tomorrow," Lin Bingbing smiled.
