The spring breeze brushed against my face, bringing with it the fragrance of the earth. Standing on the ridge of the field, I gazed at the vibrant scene before me, overwhelmed with emotion. The spring breeze of reform and opening up had swept into our small village, as if overnight, the entire world had transformed.
“Lin Xiaohui, look over there!” Li Jianguo exclaimed excitedly, interrupting my thoughts as he pointed into the distance. Following his gesture, I saw a brand new tractor rumbling down the freshly paved cement road at the village entrance. Such a sight was unimaginable in the past!
We exchanged smiles, our eyes sparkling with hope. “Jian Guo, you’re right; it’s time to embark on a venture,” I said, gripping his hand tightly, filled with determination.
Thus began our entrepreneurial journey. We scraped together some money and established a small processing factory dedicated to producing agricultural by-products. The early days were not easy; we worked from dawn till dusk, sometimes so busy that we forgot to eat.
I remember one time when we received a large order that had to be completed within three days. During those days, Jian Guo and I hardly slept, working tirelessly in the factory night after night. On the final night, I could barely hold on and leaned against the wall, dozing off.
“Lin Xiaohui, wake up.” Jian Guo gently nudged me and handed me a bowl of steaming noodles. “Eat something first; don’t starve yourself.”
As I took the bowl, tears unexpectedly welled up in my eyes. Jian Guo panicked, “What’s wrong? Are you too tired?”
I shook my head and wiped away my tears. “I just feel that being with you makes all the hardships worthwhile.”
Jian Guo paused for a moment before breaking into a smile that was warmer than sunshine. “Silly girl, didn’t we agree? To strive together and enjoy the fruits of victory together.”
And so we supported each other and fought together. Gradually, our business began to flourish, and life improved. We bought new furniture and appliances and even saved up to buy bicycles for our children. Watching them ride their bikes joyfully brought sweetness to our hearts.
The children thrived in this environment as well. Our eldest daughter got accepted into university, becoming the first college student in the village; our son inherited his father’s skills and became a renowned carpenter; our youngest daughter took over my business and expanded our small factory significantly. As we watched them succeed in their own ways, Jian Guo and I often sat together in silence, smiling at each other.
Sometimes I would reminisce about my former urban life—the dazzling lights and bustling crowds that once captivated me. But now, standing in my own little yard surrounded by fragrant fruits and hearing the laughter of neighbors, I knew this was my true happiness.
I have completely immersed myself in this era and fallen in love with life here. Every morning, I take walks with Jianguo. As we watch the changes in the village, we often exclaim, "Life is getting more promising!"
We have witnessed the transformation of this era together, as well as each other's growth. From our naive youth to our now graying hair, our bond has only deepened. The young people in the village often look at us with envy, saying we are their role models.
One time, a young man from the village, Xiao Li, came to seek Jianguo's advice. He said he wanted to pursue Xiaofang from the east end of the village. Jianguo chuckled and said, "You need to learn to care for her. Just like my Lin Xiaohui; don’t be fooled by her being a strong woman now. Back when I was chasing her, I put in quite a bit of effort."
I pretended to be angry and lightly slapped him on the arm, "Stop talking nonsense; it was clearly me who fell for you first."
Jianguo laughed heartily, "Alright, alright, it was you who fell for me. The luckiest thing in my life is that you chose me."
Hearing this made my heart swell with sweetness, though I feigned seriousness, "Alright, enough joking around. Xiao Li is still here; don’t lead him astray."
Xiao Li looked at our playful banter with envy in his eyes, "Uncle and Auntie, if I could have a relationship like yours with Xiaofang, that would be wonderful."
Jianguo and I exchanged smiles, understanding that our love story has become a cherished tale in the village, inspiring the younger generation. This fills us with immense pride and happiness.
Looking back on the past, I often marvel at the wonders of fate. If it weren't for that accident, I might never have come to this small village, never have met Li Jianguo, and wouldn't have this happy life today. I am grateful for fate's arrangement that brought me Jianguo and our children, allowing me to have this warm home.
Standing on the threshold of a new era, I look forward to the future with great anticipation. I believe that as long as we continue to work hard, we can create an even better life. Just as Jianguo and I often say: "Our lives will keep getting better!"
As the sun sets in the west, Jianguo and I stand side by side, watching the evening glow on the horizon. I gently lean on his shoulder, filled with happiness and gratitude. This is my new life, my new hope.
