After surveying the surroundings, Mo Wen's gaze fell upon the center of the lake. There, a platform measuring a hundred feet square lay, upon which a skeleton was sprawled. The skeleton stood over two meters tall and measured more than four meters in length. Its head resembled that of a dragon, with a horn protruding from its forehead, and its hooves were like those of a horse. Suddenly, a wave of oppressive force emanated from the skeleton, nearly causing Mo Wen to kneel on the ground. The pressure came and went so quickly that he barely had time to react.
"Could this be the legendary Divine Beast, Qilin?" At that moment, he could no longer think about the earlier pressure; his jaw dropped in astonishment once more. However, he quickly regained his composure as Xiao Hei appeared on the platform, prostrating before the skeleton as if performing some sort of ritual. Then, rising to its feet, it extended a paw to touch the skeleton. Mo Wen wondered if the earlier pressure had been caused by Xiao Hei and realized he needed to call out to it immediately.
"Xiao Hei, don’t!"
"That is its Opportunity," an elderly voice echoed in his ear.
"Who’s there?" Mo Wen jumped at the sudden voice.
"I am right before you; what you see is me."
"Are you the Qilin?" Upon hearing this, Mo Wen calmed down, for besides Xiao Hei, there was nothing else before him but that skeleton.
"Young human, well done for calming down so quickly. How do your kind refer to me?"
"Junior was just rude; I ask for your forgiveness, esteemed elder." Mo Wen was not surprised; he had learned from Old Lu that Divine Beast-level beings could speak human language. He bowed respectfully towards the skeleton.
"Haha! You have some manners. Cultivating the Yin Yang Principle... ah, this path is not easy..."
"Please enlighten me, esteemed elder." The fact that the Qilin could see through his cultivation made Mo Wen break into a cold sweat.
"You need not panic. Given your current low strength, it is not surprising that I can see through your Law. Your cultivation differs from mine, and I cannot tell you much. However, as far as I know, no human has ever truly mastered the Yin Yang Path." Hearing this from the elder made Mo Wen's heart sink.
"However, your kind cultivates against heaven’s will; in the end, few survive. Perhaps you might succeed." Seemingly sensing Mo Wen's change in mood, the elder added.
"Thank you for your guidance; Junior has learned much."
"Alright, my time is limited. I do not know much about human cultivation either. Your friend will need some time to merge with this remains I left behind; you should act as his Guardian."
"Esteemed elder, please wait; Junior has a few more questions."
"Speak then."
"What changes will Xiao Hei undergo after merging with this skeleton?"
"Haha! You are quite cautious. I have no interest in trivial matters; rest assured, I have been dead for thousands of years now. What remains is merely a fragment of my soul left behind to wait for an heir. Now that the heir has arrived and once he completes the merging process, my mission will be fulfilled and I shall dissipate. He will gain the Qilin Bloodline; however, to become a true Qilin, he has a long road ahead and will require extensive time to purify his Bloodline."
"Rest assured, esteemed elder; Junior will do everything in my power to protect Xiao Hei until he is strong enough. One more question: why are you here? This place does not seem suitable for your resting place." Mo Wen's inquiry was reasonable; this area still belonged to Cloud Mist Forest. Although it was perilous, it was not entirely inaccessible. A Qilin living here would surely be discovered; after its death, its remains would undoubtedly be collected by someone—after all, a Divine Beast's skeleton was exceedingly rare. Logically speaking, it should have found a more secluded place to rest in peace.
