Dinner was indeed as Father had said, with a table full of dishes that Nezha loved: Braised Lion's Head, Sweet and Sour Ribs, Steamed Fish, Stir-Fried Vegetables... Mother's cooking was still as excellent as ever, each dish a feast for the eyes and palate, making one’s appetite soar.
"Eat more," Lady Yin said, continuously serving Nezha with food, her face glowing with happiness. "It’s been a long time since Mom cooked for you, so enjoy it while it’s hot."
Nezha nodded, touched, and dug into the meal. Although the cafeteria at school offered decent food, it could never compare to his mother’s cooking. Especially after Ao Bing left, he often rushed through meals alone, missing the joy of dining together.
"By the way," Li Jing set down his chopsticks, his expression serious. "I have some good news to share with you."
Nezha looked up at his father, a sense of foreboding creeping in. Whenever Father used that tone to announce "good news," it usually meant something that wasn’t so "good" for him.
"Uncle Huang—my old comrade-in-arms who is now the HR director at East Sea Group—has agreed that after you graduate, you can go directly to work at East Sea Group. Your starting point will be higher than that of most fresh graduates, and the prospects are excellent." Li Jing's voice carried an unmistakable pride. "This is a rare opportunity; many people would do anything to get into such a big company!"
Nezha froze, his chopsticks suspended in mid-air. East Sea Group? Isn’t that Ao Bing’s father’s company? Although Ao Bing had never explicitly stated it, various clues suggested that East Sea Group was likely the commercial representative of the Dragon Tribe in the Human World. And now, Father wanted to arrange for him to work there after graduation?
“Dad, thank you for your kindness, but I...” Nezha hesitated. “I haven’t really thought about what I want to do after graduation.”
Li Jing frowned. “Haven’t thought about it? You’re already in your second year; it’s time to plan for your future. East Sea Group is large, offers great benefits and has promising prospects—it’s a dream company for many. If you miss this opportunity, you’ll regret it later!”
“But I’m not really interested in corporate work,” Nezha put down his chopsticks and looked directly into his father’s eyes. “I prefer vibrant and challenging jobs, like being a Football Coach or a PE teacher.”
“A Football Coach? A PE teacher?” Li Jing's voice shot up an octave. “What kind of future is there in that? Low salary, low status, limited growth—after all these years of studying, is this what you want to do?”
“Li Jing,” Lady Yin gently tugged at her husband’s sleeve, signaling him to calm down. “Nezha is just expressing his thoughts; graduation is still far off. There’s no rush to decide right now.”
Li Jing took a deep breath, trying to suppress his anger. "Nezha, I know you love soccer, but that can only be a hobby, not a career. The competition in society is fierce. Without a stable and respectable job, how will you establish yourself in the future? How will you start a family? How will you plan for retirement?"
Nezha fell silent. His father's words, though harsh, held some truth. He had indeed not seriously considered his future. Before meeting Ao Bing, he had drifted through each day, focused only on immediate pleasures; after meeting Ao Bing, his entire life revolved around that Blue-Haired Boy, leaving little room for anything else. Now that Ao Bing was gone, his life goals had become unclear.
"I... I will think about it," Nezha finally said softly, "but it may not be the East Sea Group."
Li Jing seemed dissatisfied with this answer but refrained from pressing further due to his wife's gaze. Dinner ended in a somewhat awkward atmosphere, and Lady Yin quickly urged the father and son to the living room to watch television, trying to ease the tension.
