Xu Ruicheng did not enter through the front door; instead, he circled around to the side and headed straight for the basement. He first glanced around, then knocked three times on the door, paused, and knocked two more times.
The basement door quietly opened a crack, and Xu Ruicheng slipped inside, the door closing silently behind him. Lin Mingchang and Shen Tong exchanged glances and quietly moved closer.
The Brick-and-Tile Cottage had a half-basement designed beneath it, with a row of small windows facing the street to allow light and ventilation. Shen Tong and Lin Mingchang crouched beneath the window, peering through the small panes to see a tall Foreigner inside, sporting a neatly trimmed golden beard, speaking with Xu Ruicheng. However, they could not hear what was being said through the glass.
Suddenly, Shen Tong tightly grasped Lin Mingchang's sleeve; her right eye throbbed with sharp pain, but she bit her lip to stifle any sound. She saw that behind the basement door was an overwhelming aura of fear and anguish, a deep blue essence so thick it glowed faintly in the night, extending countless tendrils that quivered in silent screams.
Lin Mingchang noticed her distress and whispered, "What’s wrong? What do you see?"
"The children... they're not here. There’s no anger from them here, but they must have been locked up here before, just behind that door..." Shen Tong gritted her teeth. "The children were once filled with terror and pain..."
Lin Mingchang's hand instinctively moved to his holstered gun when suddenly the Foreigner turned sharply, his piercing gaze sweeping toward the window. In an instant, his eyes locked onto Lin Mingchang's outside.
"Someone is here! You’re being followed!" the Foreigner shouted sharply, abandoning Xu Ruicheng and swiftly darting toward another part of the basement.
Without hesitation, Lin Mingchang sprang to his feet, kicked open the wooden door of the basement, and aimed his gun at Xu Ruicheng. "Don't move!"
Xu Ruicheng's face turned pale as he trembled and raised his hands. However, the Foreigner had already vanished, leaving only a half-open small door behind.
"Shen Tong, keep an eye on him!" Lin Mingchang shouted as he turned to chase after the Foreigner. The figure weaved through the upscale residential area’s villas while Lin Mingchang pursued relentlessly; however, it was clear that the Foreigner was very familiar with the terrain.
Ultimately, at a corner of a surrounding wall, the Foreigner's figure disappeared completely. Frustrated, Lin Mingchang pounded his fist against the wall before quickly returning to the basement.
In a corner of the basement lay several small beds, but they were all empty. Shen Tong was intently watching Xu Ruicheng and upon seeing Lin Mingchang return said, "We’re too late; the children have already been moved."
Xu Ruicheng was handcuffed and kneeling on the ground, his face filled with fear.
"Tell me! Where have the children been taken?" Lin Mingchang leaned in closer, questioning him sternly.
Xu Ruicheng kept his head down, stubbornly refusing to speak.
"He won't say anything," Shen Tong said, looking into Xu Ruicheng's eyes. "He's not afraid of you; he's afraid of that Foreigner from earlier."
Meanwhile, Fang Zigui skillfully picked the lock on the back door and quietly slipped into Rui Cheng Wood Workshop with Xiaoshuang.
The workshop was shrouded in darkness. Xiaoshuang took out a small flashlight from her bag, and under its faint beam, the faces of the puppets appeared even more sinister.
On the first floor, there was not only the storefront but also a kitchen and a storage room.
"Xu Ruicheng's bedroom should be upstairs," Fang Zigui pointed to the staircase. "Watch your step."
The two of them tiptoed up the stairs to the second floor, which had two rooms: a larger one that belonged to Xu Ruicheng and a smaller one for the apprentice.
Xu Ruicheng's bedroom was neatly organized, containing a narrow bed, a wardrobe, and a large wooden desk.
Ruan Xiaoshuang's flashlight beam swept across the desk, revealing several sheets of paper spread out on it.
As she approached for a closer look, she couldn't help but gasp softly, "Oh my god, this is..."
