"Right there," Mo Wen pointed ahead to the River Valley, flanked by mountains that blocked direct sunlight. The river split into two branches, forming a small island known as Koji, which was about fifty to seventy meters in diameter. The moonlight was obstructed by one of the peaks, casting the island into shadow, making it seem as if it were hiding in a dark corner. Neither the moonlight at night nor the sunlight during the day reached this place, making it an ideal habitat for a Chimera. The island was overgrown with trees, and from within the forest emanated a soft white glow, as if a massive Lighting Pearl resided there.
"I'll go eliminate it now," Erniu declared, gripping his knife and preparing to rush onto the island.
"Not yet; we need to wait a bit longer," Mo Wen stopped him.
"What are we waiting for? The sooner we eliminate it, the sooner we can move on."
"I understand your eagerness, but we can spare a moment. Besides, you don’t even know what this Bai Xu is; do you really want to charge in blindly?"
"Then why don’t you tell me what this Bai Xu is?" Erniu sheathed his knife, realizing he had acted impulsively. Charging in without understanding the situation was a major blunder in combat.
"Bai Xu is a You Ji Bai Chi. Don’t worry; let’s eat something first while I explain. You need to regain some strength..." The two gathered firewood and started roasting meat behind some rocks.
As they cooked, Mo Wen shared knowledge about Bai Xu. It was classified as an entry-level Chimera, specifically a You Ji Bai Chi. Its essence belonged to the plant category of Chimeras, which was one way people categorized them. However, it could change according to its surroundings; in a grassland, it would appear as grass, and in a forest, it would take on the form of trees. This made it difficult for people to identify. Logically speaking, a tree-like Bai Xu shouldn't pose such a high danger level, but its threat radius was alarmingly vast. It was said that some Bai Xu could turn an area of over a thousand Bird Journeys into a dead zone.
"I haven’t heard of Bai Xu before, but if what you say is true about its dangers, then its classification should be much higher," Erniu said in shock after listening to Mo Wen's explanation. They were about to face such a terrifying Chimera! Yet looking at Er Gou Brother's calm demeanor suggested he had everything under control.
"This is what I wanted to tell you next..." Mo Wen divided the roasted meat and handed some to Erniu before continuing. The reason Bai Xu posed such danger yet remained classified as You Ji Bai Chi was that it only became hazardous during its flowering period. Although there were no specific records of when Bai Xu bloomed, it was inferred that it blossomed only once every thousand years. Its danger stemmed from these flowers, which resembled clumps of white cotton. When these flowers bloomed, they transformed into translucent wisps that floated away with the wind or dissolved in water. Once animals came into contact with these wisps, they would burrow into their minds and siphon their Shen Hun.
The animals affected wouldn’t die immediately; instead, they would perish slowly over time. The duration of this process depended on the strength of the victim's Shen Hun—those with weaker Shen Hun like Beasts would die quickly from having their essence drained, while stronger Demon Beasts could endure for much longer. This explained why Tamed Beasts were the first to be affected in Kao Shu Village, followed by children; the soul energy absorbed by the flowers would return to nourish Bai Xu’s essence.
