“Ling Xue, be careful,” Yun Yi warned me, his gaze scanning the surroundings warily, sword in hand, as if sensing the lurking danger.
I cautiously approached the Qingxin Grass, taking each step carefully to avoid disturbing anything around me. My fingers gently brushed against the soft, vibrant leaves, and an inexplicable surge of power welled up within me. The icy touch brought an extraordinary clarity to my mind, and in that moment, I finally understood why the Ice Heart Grass could suppress the malevolent backlash of the Azure Blood Sword.
It possessed the power to calm the heart and spirit, providing absolute restraint against the backlash from the Azure Blood Sword. As long as I consumed it, I would no longer have to worry about the sword's corruption of my mind.
Suddenly, a sharp sound cut through the silence around us. Instinctively, I reacted, drawing my sword and turning around, ready to face the impending crisis with the Azure Blood Sword in hand.
“They're coming. Among them are definitely skilled trackers. Even in our state, we can't shake them off,” Yun Yi's voice was low and serious. His sword was already drawn as we stood back to back, preparing for battle.
From the surrounding mist emerged Mo Wuhen and his shadow guards like phantoms. Their eyes were cold, and their weapons glinted menacingly. However, I noticed that their numbers seemed significantly reduced; it appeared they had suffered heavy losses during the pursuit through the Poison Fog Marsh.
“Protect the Qingxin Grass!” I shouted first at Yun Yi while charging towards the nearest shadow guard with my sword raised.
Yun Yi nodded, a glint of determination flashing in his eyes. His figure moved like a ghost among our enemies, and wherever his sword passed, shadow guards retreated.
I met the oncoming enemy head-on; the Azure Blood Sword sliced through the air with chilling brilliance. One shadow guard broke through my defenses and charged at me directly. I sidestepped and countered with a reverse strike, my sword grazing his chest. He let out a muffled groan and collapsed to the ground. But this was just the beginning; more shadow guards surged in from all directions, their eyes devoid of emotion—only cold-blooded intent to kill.
Yun Yi and I stood back to back, our breaths quickening in the tense air. Each breath felt like a race against death. Our swords intertwined in a protective web against the onslaught of enemies.
Suddenly, I felt a chill creeping up from behind me. I spun around sharply; with a whoosh of air, my Azure Blood Sword clashed against a black blade. Mo Wuhen struck like a venomous snake, launching a sudden attack with immense force that nearly made me lose grip on my sword as pain shot through my hands. Gritting my teeth, I summoned all my strength for a counterattack that forced him back.
At that moment, I heard Yun Yi's furious roar as he fought two shadow guards fiercely. I attempted to move towards him for support but felt a sharp pain in my left arm. Mo Wuhen's blade had struck swiftly; blood instantly soaked my sleeve.
Ignoring the pain, I swung my sword again and pushed Mo Wuhen back once more. But then I witnessed a scene of utter despair—another shadow guard seemed to have received instructions from Mo Wuhen and seized the opportunity to approach the Qingxin Grass. His dagger glinted ominously in the sunlight as it aimed directly at that fragile spirit herb.
“No!” I let out a heart-wrenching scream as the Azure Blood Sword slipped from my grasp, transforming into a streak of blue light aimed at that shadow guard. However, it was too late; the dagger had already descended, and in an instant, the Qingxin Grass withered away, losing its vitality.
