The woman, both detestable and pitiable, brought tears to my eyes, leaving me speechless.
Yet, a thought suddenly emerged in my mind: there was no such thing as Immortal Grass in this world; it was merely Consort Yan's scheme to eliminate me.
Why would Ke Rao Yin help me? I had initially thought he only wanted to kill me to silence me, but at this moment, it seemed that Young Master's death had nothing to do with him, and he genuinely wanted to save me.
A vague feeling surged within me.
"Rao Yin, I give you one last chance to return to my side. Even without Young Master, the Emperor will surely show me extra compassion because of this. As long as you come back with me, I promise the future world will be yours!"
I suddenly looked at Rao Yin, but he gazed at Consort Yan instead, smiling faintly. "I won't go with you."
His calm yet resolute words twisted Consort Yan's beautiful face into a grimace. "Fine! Very well! If that's the case, you can both die together!" With a wave of her hand, the black-clad men beside her drew their bows, shooting arrows towards Rao Yin and me. His wide cloak enveloped me as I heard the whistling sound all around; I trembled all over.
Suddenly, Rao Yin's body went rigid.
His grip on my hand turned icy cold. I watched him slowly collapse, warm crimson liquid streaming down my cheek. The instant terror nearly shattered me. "Rao Yin..."
He fell to the ground, slightly opening his eyes, a faint smile gracing his lips. "I told you I would protect you, Ru Fei."
The last two words pierced my heart like a sharp blade. What did he just call me?
Suddenly, a piercing voice echoed in my ears. Consort Yan looked at Rao Yin and laughed sharply. "You... you would actually be willing to die for her!"
She tightened her grip around my throat and said, “ bitch, go accompany the dead!”
I struggled to breathe, my body feeling utterly drained of strength.
Yes, I had already died once. If I could die alongside Rao Yin, that would be acceptable.
I slowly closed my eyes, but then I heard the distant sound of hoofbeats. A loud voice rang out, “The Emperor has decreed, seize Consort Yan!”
…
When I awoke again, I found myself surrounded by sheer curtains and a lavish bed. Had I died, or had I… crossed over again?
“Third Miss, Third Miss!” Someone called out to me; it was Xiao You.
“Where am I?” My throat was dry as I propped myself up.
Xiao You hurried to support me. “This is the Second Prince’s palace.”
The Second Prince’s palace? I froze for a moment and grabbed Xiao You tightly. “Where is the Second Prince?”
“The Second Prince… he…” Xiao You winced from my grip and struggled to find her words.
My body stiffened. “He… is dead?” A sharp pain pierced through my heart as I staggered out, completely disregarding what Xiao You shouted behind me.
Suddenly, my hand was grabbed, and I was pulled into the woods. I stared wide-eyed at the person in front of me.
Rao Yin stood under the tree, just as I had seen him for the first time. But this time, I didn’t have a chamber pot in my hand to throw at him, and his face was pale, with thick bandages wrapped around his chest.
A wave of bitterness surged in my throat, and before I knew it, tears streamed down my face.
Rao Yin paused for a moment, then reached out to wipe away my tears, lightly tapping my forehead. His voice was surprisingly gentle: “Why are you crying? I’m not dead yet.”
“You’re not dead.” My sobs grew louder.
He frowned. “It seems you’d rather I were dead.”
Yes, Rao Yin, why are you still alive? A person as cruel as you shouldn’t be able to escape death.
It was strange; I clearly knew he was a cold-blooded person, that he had done so many terrible things, that he had been unfeeling towards Lady Hu Third, let alone me. Yet, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t bring myself to hate him.
It felt as if that wasn’t him—the Rao Yin I knew wasn’t like that at all.
