The rain of arrows fell like a shuttle, and the sounds of battle echoed through the air. Cao Cao, in a state of disarray, waved his sword to command his remaining guards, but they were few. The enemy closed in relentlessly, their blades reflecting a cold light that devoured his escape route like a ferocious beast. He gasped for breath, anxiety gnawing at his heart, and finally could not help but roar, "Who can save me?"
As his voice faded, a figure suddenly leaped out from the ranks of the Cao Army—Dian Wei. Towering and fierce, with a face full of rage, he wielded Twin Iron Halberds, exuding an aura of invincible ferocity. He responded loudly, "Do not worry, my Lord! It is Wei here!" With that, Dian Wei dismounted and firmly planted his Twin Iron Halberds into the ground before unsheathing a bundle of short halberds from his back.
He waved to the soldiers beside him and coldly ordered, "Thieves, shout for me when you reach ten paces." Then he strode toward the enemy like a fierce tiger. Arrows continued to rain down from above, but Dian Wei remained unfazed, his gaze fixed on the enemy lines.
The enemy cavalry rushed forward at high speed. Seeing the urgency of the situation, someone shouted loudly, "Ten paces!"
Dian Wei did not stop; instead, he commanded in a deep voice, "Shout when you reach five paces!" His voice was steady as a mountain, sending a tremor through everyone present.
Moments later, the soldier called out again, "Five paces!"
A cold smile crept across Dian Wei's lips as he suddenly halted. With a powerful motion of his right arm, he hurled one of the short halberds forward. The sharp blade sliced through the air and accurately pierced the chest of an enemy soldier, sending both man and horse crashing to the ground. Like the wind, he continued to throw halberd after halberd; each strike claimed a life without fail. In no time at all, dozens of enemy soldiers lay dead on the ground as the remaining foes retreated in terror.
Dian Wei cast a cold glance at the enemy troops before retrieving his Twin Iron Halberds from the ground with a mighty shout: "Now it's my turn!" He leaped back onto his horse and charged into the enemy ranks with his iron halberds swinging; no one could withstand his onslaught. The four generals—Hao Meng, Cao Xing, Cheng Lian, and Song Xian—sensed danger and fled with their troops.
Dian Wei fought fiercely to protect Cao Cao as he scattered the enemy forces. Panting heavily, Cao Cao finally escaped from the chaos and turned back to see Dian Wei covered in blood, gratitude etched across his face.
As more generals arrived to encircle Cao Cao and lead him back to camp, dust rose again in the distance and shouts of battle filled the air once more. Looking back, they saw Lü Bu clad in golden armor and wielding the Fangtian Halberd riding swiftly on Red Hare toward them. His eyes were icy as he bellowed like thunder: "Cao thief! You shall not escape!"
Within the Cao Army, morale was low; men and horses were exhausted. The soldiers exchanged anxious glances, fear written all over their faces as no one dared to confront the enemy.
"What should we do?" one soldier murmured softly, despair evident in his eyes.
Cao Cao forced himself to remain calm as he scanned those around him. Just as he was about to speak, Dian Wei had already spurred his horse forward with Twin Iron Halberds in hand and an aura of murderous intent surrounding him. He turned back and shouted: "Today let me show you how Dian Wei will block this ruffian!"
With that declaration, Dian Wei charged forth on horseback against Lü Bu's fierce advance like a whirlwind; his iron halberds gleamed coldly in the morning light. He roared defiantly: "Lü Bu! If you have guts, come fight me!"
As Lü Bu saw Dian Wei charging towards him, his eyes narrowed slightly, revealing a look of disdain. "A mantis trying to stop a chariot dares to block me?" With that, he struck Red Hare, surging forward like a thunderbolt towards Dian Wei.
Under the watchful eyes of both armies, the two heroes clashed. The sound of their weapons colliding echoed like thunder, sparks flying as if lightning had struck. Dian Wei's arms were as strong as steel; each strike carried immense force, pushing Lü Bu into a slightly defensive position. However, Lü Bu's movements were agile, his Fangtian Halberd dancing in the air, defending flawlessly.
After more than ten exchanges, Lü Bu suddenly let out a fierce roar, accelerating his attacks with three consecutive strikes that forced Dian Wei to retreat several steps. Yet, Dian Wei stood firm like a mountain and grinned, "Is that all you've got?" Gripping his iron halberd tightly, he unleashed a powerful blow that pushed Lü Bu back half a step, causing Red Hare to let out a long whinny.
Cao Cao observed that Dian Wei could temporarily hold off Lü Bu and breathed a sigh of relief. However, he soon noticed Lü Bu's subordinates—Wei Xu, Hou Cheng, Zhang Liao—had already encircled them, making the situation even more dire. He turned and commanded, "All troops cover the retreat; do not linger in battle!"
Hearing the order, Dian Wei shouted sideways, "My Lord, hurry! Leave this place to me!"
With that, he swung his halberd fiercely, forcing Lü Bu to reverse his Fangtian Halberd in defense and creating some distance between them. Dian Wei then turned his horse around to cover Cao Cao's retreat. Yet Lü Bu was relentless in pursuit, leading his troops with a thunderous battle cry.
Cao Cao fled desperately, soldiers falling beside him as hooves trampled through pools of blood. As ambushers appeared from both sides, Cao Cao gritted his teeth and growled, "If we can escape today intact, I will reward you all handsomely!"
As Cao Cao led the remnants of his army down the mountain path in haste, he glanced back to see Lü Bu's forces pursuing like ferocious tigers. Anxiety gripped him as he cursed under his breath, "Am I really going to die here?"
At that moment, thunderous drums sounded from ahead as a troop emerged from the south. Leading them was Xiahou Dun, glaring fiercely with one eye and wielding a spear. He shouted loudly, "Lü Bu scoundrel! Dare you fight Xiahou Dun?" He charged forward with his spear, leading reinforcements into Lü Bu's pursuing forces amidst the rising battle cries.
Seeing this, Lü Bu halted his horse and sneered. "Xiahou Dun, just in time! Today I will send you along with Cao Cao!" He spurred his horse and charged into battle against Xiahou Dun. Their weapons clashed with a resounding metallic ring; as their halberds and spears danced through the air, sparks flew while soldiers on both sides paused to witness this fierce duel between champions.
After more than ten exchanges, Xiahou Dun began to tire while Lü Bu grew increasingly fierce. With a powerful strike downward from his halberd, Xiahou Dun managed to block it with his spear but was still jolted back several steps due to the force. Seizing the opportunity to press on for another strike, Lü Bu suddenly noticed dark clouds gathering overhead and heard thunder rumbling ominously.
Before long, heavy rain poured down relentlessly; the battlefield turned muddy and visibility diminished for the soldiers while commands became hard to relay. Lü Bu looked up at the sky and pointed his halberd towards the direction of Cao's army. "Today you are fortunate; I will surely eradicate you all another day!" With that command given, he withdrew his forces.
Xiahou Dun took a moment to catch his breath before turning back to see that Cao Cao had been escorted to safety. He then led his troops to gather the remaining soldiers and escort their Lord back to camp.
Upon returning to the camp soaked through but unbothered by it all, Cao Cao hurried over to Dian Wei and patted him firmly on the shoulder. "Today it was thanks to you and Xiahou Dun that we were able to turn the tide; I owe my life to you!" Turning towards the assembled generals he announced, "Dian Wei has performed excellently in protecting our Lord; I hereby promote him to Commandant and reward him with one hundred gold pieces along with an additional warhorse!"
Dian Wei, upon hearing this, clasped his fists and accepted the command with a calm demeanor. "Thank you, my Lord, but I only seek to slay Lü Bu's head in one day to avenge you!" Cao Cao laughed heartily at his words, and the soldiers cheered loudly, the atmosphere in the tent finally easing from its previous tension.
As night fell, Lü Bu sat in his tent, listening to Chen Gong explain his strategy. Chen Gong stood with his hands clasped behind him, slowly walking to the sand table. He pointed at the city of Puyang with a wooden stick and said, "In Puyang City resides the Tian clan, with thousands of servants; they are the most powerful and wealthy family in this region. They have long harbored discontent towards Cao Cao, and now is our best opportunity to use them."
Lü Bu leaned on his halberd, intrigued. "What should we do?"
Chen Gong smiled slightly, a glint of cold light flashing in his eyes. "Send a secret envoy from the Tian clan with a letter to Cao Cao, informing him that you have moved your troops to Li Yang and left Gao Shun to defend Puyang City. Have the Tian clan promise to act as insiders, luring Cao Cao's army to launch a night raid on Puyang. At that time, we will set an ambush within the city and another outside; once Cao Cao steps into the trap and all four gates are set ablaze, he will find it hard to escape."
Lü Bu burst into laughter and slammed his palm on the table. "Excellent! Truly a brilliant plan; you indeed have wisdom! We shall proceed as you say."
After saying this, he ordered someone to summon the Tian Family Head and instructed him to send a letter to Cao Cao's camp. The Tian Family Head dared not refuse and immediately sent a confidant servant that night with a carefully forged secret letter into Cao Cao's army.
In Cao Cao's camp, the lights shone brightly as many generals gathered together. Cao Cao was deep in thought over the sand table when a guard hurriedly entered to report, "My Lord, the Tian clan from Puyang has sent a secret letter." With that, he presented a letter with both hands.
Cao Cao took the letter and opened it; a flicker of joy crossed his eyes as he read aloud: "Lü Bu is cruel and ruthless; he has moved his troops to Li Yang and left Gao Shun to defend the city. The Tian clan is willing to act as insiders; if my Lord arrives quickly, General of the city will raise a white flag as a signal, inscribing 'righteousness' as a secret mark." He set down the letter and looked intensely at everyone present, smiling as he declared, "Heaven helps me! Lü Bu has actually handed over Puyang; this city belongs to me!"
The generals in the tent mostly agreed enthusiastically: "Lü Bu has always been reckless; indeed, the city is empty; we must seize this opportunity!"
Only Liu Ye stepped forward with a serious expression and bowed respectfully. "My Lord, please wait. Although Lü Bu lacks deep strategy, Chen Gong is cunning and full of schemes. This letter seems suspicious; there may be deceit within it. I believe our army should not move lightly. If we advance, we should split into three teams: one main force lying in ambush outside the city for support, another team in reserve for backup against ambushes. My Lord could lead an advance team into the city to scout; thus we can attack if necessary or retreat if needed."
Cao Cao pondered for a moment and found Liu Ye's reasoning sound. He then slammed his palm on the table and said decisively, "Very well! We shall act according to Liu Ye's plan!" He immediately issued orders to mobilize the troops and divide them into three routes in preparation for a night raid on Puyang.
