The night wind rolled in layers of heat, making Ye Jieyu, who was accustomed to the pleasant weather of Jiangnan, feel utterly frustrated.
Suddenly, a sound of water splashing from the adjacent room caught her attention, instantly lifting her spirits. She quickly jumped out of bed and rushed to the door of the neighboring room.
Inside, a dim light flickered, casting shadows on the paper window. A muscular arm, strikingly sensual, lifted from the edge of a wooden tub, and as water splashed, a tall figure rose from within.
Hiding beneath the window, Ye Jieyu swallowed hard, unable to contain her curiosity as she peered through the paper.
With a sudden "pop," the paper tore open, plunging the room into darkness as the light extinguished.
Ye Jieyu silently lamented her misfortune; just as she turned to leave, a gust of cold wind blew open the window frame. A slick arm shot out and grabbed her collar, pulling her inside.
"Ah!" Before her scream could finish, she found herself pressed against a damp, bare chest.
"It's you?" The hand around her neck loosened slightly as Mu Jingkui's sultry voice carried a hint of displeasure.
"Ugh!" Ye Jieyu nodded vigorously; it wasn't that she couldn't speak, but her face was pressed against his bare skin, making it difficult to respond.
Mu Jingkui seemed to sense something was off and pushed her away abruptly.
In the darkness, his handsome face flushed with heat where she had touched him; a rush of warmth surged through his veins, pooling in his lower abdomen.
"What are you doing here?" He fumbled in the dark for his clothes on the screen but inadvertently touched something soft instead, followed by an awkward gasp.
"Ah!" "Ah!" They both jumped back simultaneously, and a series of clattering sounds echoed in the darkness before silence returned.
"Damn it, stand still!"
Mu Jingkui growled in frustration as he quickly grabbed his clothes from the screen and threw them over himself. "What on earth are you doing here?"
Ye Jieyu was still lost in the sensation of that sudden grasp, taking a while to regain her senses before she muttered, “Just passing by.”
“Passing by?” Mu Jingkui exclaimed incredulously, “Are you wandering outside my window in the middle of the night?”
Ye Jieyu stuck out her tongue; she couldn’t very well admit she was spying! “Um, I was going to the restroom. I had a bad stomach from dinner. Hehe!” With that, she stumbled her way to the door.
Hearing the sound of the door opening and closing, Mu Jingkui coldly called out into the darkness, “The restroom is in the west wing; you’re going the wrong way.”
After another round of clattering noises, everything fell silent.
Mu Jingkui stood still for a while, still feeling the softness of her touch lingering in his hand, a slight smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
For a brief moment, he even wished she would never ask him to do that last thing. As long as he hadn’t done it yet, he could refrain from acting.
Unfortunately! The smile was as fleeting as a flash in the pan.
Ye Jieyu! They were destined to face each other with swords drawn one day.
His presence here was solely for her demise.
A killer must never harbor feelings.
…
“Madam, what’s wrong with your eyes?”
“Cramped!” she replied with a face that suggested she was struggling.
“Madam, what’s wrong with your neck?”
"Stiff neck!" she exclaimed, pushing forward.
"Boss lady, what happened to your forehead?"
"Damn it, are you all just too idle?"
From behind the counter, Ye Jieyu slammed the abacus down. "I was just peeking at a man taking a bath, so what?!"
"Who left the handcart all over the back corridor?"
That caused her to fall flat on her face, utterly humiliating.
With a loud crash, everyone scattered like birds.
On the staircase to the second floor, Mu Jingkui looked down at her with a cold expression.
Ye Jieyu lifted her chin defiantly and glared back at him. "Don't get any wrong ideas. I was drunk yesterday and took a wrong turn to the restroom." With that, she hid her face behind the account book and scurried out from behind the counter.
There was no helping it; it was just too embarrassing. Unless someone was deaf, they would have heard everything.
Ye Jieyu, you really need to keep your cool.
