After leaving the restaurant, we went to the supermarket at the entrance of the academy and bought a thin blanket, a desk lamp, pots and pans, seasonings, eggs, milk powder, and more. With four hands busy, we returned home fully loaded.
It was rare for me to drink, and as I walked, I felt a bit lightheaded.
Once we got home, we thoroughly cleaned the bathroom and kitchen, then enjoyed a nice hot shower. After everything was in order, Gao Jun began to set up his easel and paints in preparation for the work starting tomorrow, while I took out a magazine I had brought along and leaned back on the bed to read.
I don't know if it was the effect of the alcohol, but before long, my eyelids felt heavy. Seeing that Gao Jun showed no signs of stopping, I decided to lie back and take a short nap.
I drifted in and out of sleep for what felt like quite some time.
“Xiao Yun, Xiao Yun!” Someone was softly calling my name.
I opened my eyes to see Gao Jun's concerned face.
“If you're tired, just sleep well. You might catch a cold like this.”
“Hmm.” I rubbed my sleepy eyes. “What time is it?”
“Almost nine o'clock. You should sleep first; I'll be done soon.”
“Alright.” I took off my outer clothes and pulled the blanket over myself. For some reason, I thought of the little girl next door and asked, “Has Teacher Zhao's family come home yet?”
Gao Jun hesitated for a moment before replying, “It seems they haven't.”
"What should we do?" I exclaimed anxiously. "What will she eat alone? And now that it's dark, she must be even more scared!"
Gao Jun scratched his forehead. "Teacher Zhao and the others will have it arranged, right? They wouldn't let their own child go hungry. Besides, I think they should be back soon."
After saying this, he tucked the blanket around me. "Just go to sleep; there's no need to worry."
I knew it was pointless to argue with him, so I turned over in a huff and ignored him.
Seeing that I had closed my eyes, Gao Jun finally felt relieved and left.
I lay in bed, straining my ears, hoping to hear the sound of Zhao Feng and his wife returning home.
Time ticked by slowly, but I still couldn't hear any movement in the hallway outside. Drowsiness washed over me again, and my thoughts began to blur as I gradually sank into an endless darkness.
The suffocating darkness and fear surrounded me. A chilling sensation spread throughout my body.
Suddenly, a flicker of ghostly firelight appeared in the dark, illuminating two familiar yet distant faces.
"Dad! Mom!" I shouted loudly, but they seemed unable to hear me. They spoke to me with serious expressions on their faces.
I remembered that I had just made a mistake; I had lied. Why did I lie? I couldn't recall.
Then Dad picked me up and walked toward the black wardrobe in our home. Panicking, I kicked my legs wildly and cried out, "I won't do it again! I promise I won't lie anymore! I don't want to be locked in the wardrobe!"
My mother looked at me, seemingly reluctant to let me go, but after glancing at my father, she ultimately remained silent.
I was locked inside the wardrobe, where it was dark and I could only see a faint light from the crack of the door. I felt so scared.
"I want to get out! Dad, let me out!" I cried out.
"Don't cry! Reflect on your behavior; the more you cry, the longer you'll stay in there!" my father said sternly from outside.
So I could only stifle my sobs, but the cries around me grew louder: "I want to get out! Dad, let me out! I want to get out! Dad, let me out!"
That wasn't my voice!
I turned my head in terror and discovered there was another little girl in the wardrobe. She was staring at me with a sorrowful and piercing gaze while crying out in anguish!
"Stop crying!" I urgently reached out to cover her mouth. The girl took out a brush and began writing something on the inside of the wardrobe. I grabbed her hand, trying to pry her fingers apart, but a cold, slippery sensation spread through my body from my palm. Suddenly, her skin began to crack and peel away in layers as I forced her fingers apart, the broken skin falling like snowflakes from her hands...
I was terrified and covered my eyes. The voice continued to echo: "I want to get out! Dad, let me out! I want to get out! Dad, let me out!"
