The East Sea Dragon Prince, Tao Tie, once again pushed the limits of gourmet dining.
With sheer determination, he consumed food meant for nearly a thousand people, spread across more than fifty tables.
Of course, that wasn't the main point.
The crux of the matter was that, according to an informed turtle, what Tao Tie ate that day could no longer be classified as mere food.
Each table was adorned with one hundred and eight exquisite dishes, beautifully presented on lavish platters. However, the flavors were beyond the simple descriptions of sweet, sour, bitter, and spicy.
To put it simply, while normal dishes are prepared separately, the cuisine from the Dragon Palace that day seemed to have been cooked all together in one pot. The mixture of oil, salt, sauce, and vinegar created a taste that defied any words to describe it.
It was said that a greedy little shrimp sneaked a tiny bite and immediately rolled its eyes back, foaming at the mouth before fainting on the spot.
As a result, Tao Tie's reputation as a gourmet spread throughout the three realms. Any living creature now kept their distance from him, fearing they might inadvertently be devoured.
With his ability to consume such extraordinary food, the rumors of Tao Tie being extremely picky eaters were thoroughly debunked. He solidified his reputation as a gourmet and earned the title of someone who would eat anything in sight.
Meanwhile, the South Sea Third Princess watched in horror as her future husband displayed such an insatiable appetite. Fearing she might be swallowed whole at any moment, she fled back to the South Sea in tears, vowing never to return to the East Sea. Consequently, their marriage plans were dashed.
Afterward, the Turtle Prime Minister gave a heartfelt thumbs-up to Tao Tie, who was cradling his beloved: “Your Highness, your strategy of killing two birds with one stone is truly brilliant.”
Tao Tie smirked as a strand of hair slipped from his updo: “Inflicting ten thousand casualties while wounding myself eight thousand.” He suppressed the urge to gag at the thought of consuming such food again; he did not wish to relive that experience. He glanced at Jiu Jiu in his arms, carefully selecting items. Sighing with relief, he was glad his suffering had not been in vain.
His earlier jest had caused Jiu Jiu to flee from him for over two hundred years. Now that everything was laid bare, although Jiu Jiu still felt somewhat awkward about it all, she had not truly packed her bags to return to the Heavenly Court.
Jiu Jiu guessed what Tao Tie was thinking and couldn't help but roll her eyes. If it weren't for the curse he had placed on her still being in effect, she would have slipped away long ago. She would never admit that she was moved by the food she had eaten that day, which was made by Tao Tie, and that was why she stayed to give them both a chance.
Others might not understand Tao Tie's picky eating habits, but she knew them all too well and had experienced them firsthand.
Years ago, Tao Tie had dragged her and Turtle Prime Minister all over the country just to find the ingredients for a dessert he craved, taking three months in total.
Once, Jiu Jiu accidentally ingested a type of herb and fell into a deep slumber for quite some time. By then, Tao Tie's appetite had been spoiled by her cooking; even when his stomach growled with hunger, he refused to eat food made by ordinary chefs from the mortal realm.
It was also that mysterious herb that caused Jiu Jiu to lose her sense of taste, leading to so many subsequent events.
Fortunately, everything had passed. Even though her sense of taste hadn't returned yet, she glanced back at Tao Tie behind her. As long as someone was willing to eat the meals she prepared, what did it matter if she couldn't taste them?
She weighed the spoon in her hand and frowned in dissatisfaction. "After all this fuss, none of these spoons are as good as the one I had before."
Tao Tie interjected, "Of course not. That spoon was carved by me from South Sea Divine Wood, and you used it for hundreds of years. Naturally, it felt more comfortable." He paused and added, "I still don’t understand what you were thinking back then when you broke that spoon."
Jiu Jiu retorted, "You were the one who shattered the spoon with your magic! You almost scratched my face!" She shot him a glare filled with grievance.
Tao Tie looked astonished. "I didn’t!"
The dragon and the immortal exchanged glances for a few seconds before shifting their focus to Turtle Prime Minister standing nearby.
Turtle Prime Minister took a few steps back and said, "Ahem, I just couldn’t bear to watch you two go back and forth like this. That’s why I thought of this desperate measure."
He looked at the two with an innocent expression, a hint of cunning in his eyes. "Destroying the other items probably won't provoke Jiu Jiu, but this Spoon, which Jiu Jiu has carried with her for years as their token of affection, might yield unexpected results."
At his age, it wasn't easy to run around for these two younger ones!
Jiu Jiu squinted her eyes. "So, should I thank you then?" Her tone was teasing, but her gaze held a hint of helplessness.
Turtle Prime Minister chuckled awkwardly. "No need for thanks..."
"How about I make you a bowl of soup to nourish your body?" Jiu Jiu pressed on, her eyes carrying a trace of threat.
Turtle Prime Minister waved his hand. Having witnessed Jiu Jiu's culinary skills, he had long abandoned any thoughts of eating her cooking. "I'm just an old man; I fear I won't benefit from such nourishment..."
"I suggest King's Eight Soup. It's nutritious and flavorful!" Jiu Jiu turned to Tao Tie, her eyes filled with anticipation.
"No..." Tao Tie ignored Turtle Prime Minister's pleading gaze and nodded seriously. "Alright, it's settled then—King's Eight Soup it is."
"Help—" Turtle Prime Minister shouted in terror and turned to flee.
That day, a wail echoed from the East Sea Dragon Palace, its intensity so great that it affected the Sea Stabilizing Needle deep within the Dragon Palace, attracting a certain monkey from Hua Guo Shan and triggering a calamity in the celestial realm.
Of course, that is another story.
