Mong Si had a chilling and intimidating presence, making it clear that he was not easy to get along with. Anyone who wanted to avoid trouble would wisely choose to keep their distance. Now, he needed to find Tong Tong and could only follow the female boss's lead.
"What do you want to see? Just tell me, and I'll take you to see it," she said. As she spoke, her eyes glanced at the luxury watch peeking out from Mong Si's wrist before shifting to the magazines displayed inside her Convenience Store.
She recognized the watch from a magazine; it was worth several million! Looking at Mong Si's refined attire, it was evident he was wealthy. Knowing someone like him could be useful in the future, even if there was no chance for anything romantic.
The female boss was very attentive. Mong Si turned slightly and leaned against the edge of the Convenience Store, not responding to her.
The store was quite simple, constructed from movable panels, and when the wind blew, it produced a somewhat harsh sound. Seeing him fall silent without any intention of leaving, she scratched her head, pondering what topic to bring up with him. She couldn't discuss high-end matters, and talking about mundane things would likely seem trivial to someone who clearly belonged to the upper class.
She picked up a magazine and quickly got an idea, preparing to discuss current events with Mong Si. Before she could speak, Mong Si quietly asked, "Are the fishing boats at the dock for personal use or rented out?"
"Some are for personal use, while others are rented out. Are you looking to rent a fishing boat?" the female boss joked. "With your wealth, you should be renting a yacht instead of a fishing boat. It's getting cold lately, and with strong winds, there are fewer tourists. Yacht rentals are not doing well right now; prices are lower than usual. If you're interested in renting one, I can take you there and help you save some money!"
Mong Si showed no interest in yachts; his gaze remained fixed on the fishing boats. "Is the rental for fishing boats charged daily or monthly?"
"Daily rentals? That would be too much trouble! The shortest rental period is a month!"
Upon hearing this, Mong Si's eyes behind his black sunglasses flickered slightly. "Are you familiar with the dock?"
"Very familiar! Fishermen from around the dock often come here to buy things. Don't let my small shop fool you; I have everything they need at good prices, so they love coming here!"
"Which fishing boats are available for monthly rental recently? Can you help me find out?"
"Well..."
Seeing a troubled expression on her face, Mong Si took out his wallet and pulled out a stack of cash, placing it in front of her.
"Talking about money can hurt feelings."
The female boss said this, and after a slight hesitation, she took the money in her hand and weighed it. It was not quite ten thousand, but at least eight thousand.
As long as she could find out which family's boat had been rented out recently, she could earn that much money; she would be able to wake up smiling from her dreams tonight. The female boss tucked the money into her pocket. "You wouldn't believe it, but today Old Liu's Family came here and bought quite a few things. I asked her if they had struck it rich. She said their fishing boat had just been rented out, and they finally had some free time to stay in the city for a month or so before coming back."
"Are the fish at the dock all caught for a living?"
"Most of them are. Old Liu encountered a storm while at sea a couple of years ago and injured his back. He has been increasingly unable to manage things over the past two years and has long wanted to rent out his fishing boat. However, since his boat is a bit old, he is stubborn and unwilling to lower the rent. The boats he was renting with others have already been leased out; his is still in hand. To make ends meet, he can only go out to sea when his health allows, catching whatever fish he can."
Everyone is just trying to make a living. Old Liu's poor health makes it hard for him to partner with others for fishing; others see him as weak and are unwilling to deal with him. He wants to find a partner, but the asking price is too high for him to afford. He can only fish three days and rest two days, barely scraping by.
Old Liu's Family has often complained to the female boss about his stubbornness. When Old Liu's Family came to the Convenience Store today, they were smiling like a blooming flower; it was clear that their boat had been rented out, and they were in a good mood.
Seeing her like that, the female boss congratulated her and started gossiping about how much the rent was. Old Liu's Family looked around mysteriously and lowered their voice, saying, "I’ll only tell you; you can't tell anyone else."
"By the looks of it, the rent must be quite high."
If the rent were low, the smile on Old Liu's Family's face would surely have vanished by now. The female boss was eager to know the rent and quickly nodded, "I can keep my mouth shut!"
Old Liu's Family held up two fingers. "Two thousand a month?"
Old Liu's Family shook their head. "If it were two thousand a month, my husband would be unwilling! If he had been willing to lower the price from the start, our fishing boat wouldn’t have gone so many years without being rented out. I've suffered alongside him for so long because of this! If it weren't for my discord with my wife, I would have moved to the city long ago and wouldn't have bothered taking care of him!"
"Then is it twenty thousand a month?"
The female boss saw Old Liu's Family speaking with such joy that her smile almost reached her ears as she revealed a number she couldn't even believe herself.
The fishing boat from Old Liu's Family was something the female boss had seen before; it wasn't exactly broken down but was only about fifty percent new. Even if it were brand new, the rent should be halved; thus, their boat would only be worth around two thousand.
The female boss spoke with a hint of envy and an imperceptible doubt in her tone.
Old Liu's Family gleefully replied, "You're so clever! Originally, they wanted to rent it for one month, but my husband said no; at least three months minimum. They didn't negotiate further with us and directly paid sixty thousand in rent upfront along with a twenty-thousand deposit."
That totaled eighty thousand—an amount representing several years of their income!
After renting out the boat yesterday, Old Liu and his wife were so happy that they didn't sleep all night. Previously, Old Liu's family had complained about his stubbornness, but ever since they received the money, she felt incredibly pleased and even found Old Liu more agreeable. She personally went out to buy a lot of snacks to go with drinks.
The female boss, upon hearing this, pretended to be happy for Old Liu's family on the surface, but inwardly she cursed the fool who paid so much money to rent such a small, shabby boat. Why couldn't she have that kind of luck and meet that fool? Although she didn't have a fishing boat herself, she could help make connections and at least earn some commission.
Yesterday had been an unlucky day for her, but today she encountered a windfall. When Mong Si asked about it, she immediately recounted everything in detail. After finishing, she continued to gossip, saying, "That old boat of theirs definitely isn't worth that price. If you ask me, the person renting the boat must be new to the fishing industry and knows nothing. They probably think that just renting a boat means they can go out to sea and catch fish to make a profit!"
Mong Si wasn't in the mood to listen to her complaints and asked, "Where is their fishing boat?"
"I'll take you there."
Everyone has a sense of competition. Old Liu's family received eighty thousand from their tenant, while the female boss only got eight thousand from Mong Si, which was still quite a difference.
