With the experienced and skilled Old Master Liu acting as the "anchor" of Jiang's Repair and Renovation Shop, the operational efficiency of the shop immediately improved significantly. 0

Old Master Liu handled most of the daily repair requests that came through the door, from changing light bulbs and fixing sockets to tuning bicycles and sewing machines, even addressing minor issues with household appliances. With decades of experience and patience, he managed to resolve each problem one by one. Although his speed couldn't match Jiang Tao's miraculous ability enhanced by his skills, he was reliable and steady. His friendly demeanor and clear explanations earned him the trust of the local community. 0

This allowed Jiang Tao to fully free himself up, pouring most of his energy into higher-profit and more technically demanding renovation projects. During the day, he scoured scrap stations, secondhand markets, and even rural areas to acquire various promising old items. After closing for the night, the small warehouse behind the shop became his "laboratory," where he would disassemble, study, repair, optimize, and assemble until late into the night. 0

The young apprentice Wang Hao diligently learned from Old Master Liu and made rapid progress, helping out with various tasks. The shop was bustling with a vibrant atmosphere. 0

However, as business flourished for Jiang Tao and the reputation of Jiang's Repair and Renovation Shop grew louder, it inevitably caused some individuals to feel uneasy and restless. 0

That morning, after Jiang Tao had just finished tuning a refurbished 12-inch black-and-white Seagull television set and was about to place it in a prominent spot outside the shop, two middle-aged men in blue uniforms with serious expressions walked in. 0

"Excuse me, which one of you is Jiang Tao, Boss Jiang?" asked one man named Guo Zi Lian, his sharp gaze fixed on Jiang Tao as he held a briefcase. 0

Old Master Liu paused momentarily while greeting customers, but Jiang Tao felt a sinking sensation in his heart. He could clearly see that although these two were wearing tax bureau uniforms, their demeanor suggested they were looking for trouble—much like when the business administration had previously caused issues. 0

"Damn it, that old bastard Ma Guoqiang just won't let up!" Jiang Tao cursed inwardly while forcing a smile on his face as he approached them. "I am Jiang Tao. How can I help you gentlemen?" 0

Guo Zi Lian displayed his work ID. "City Tax Bureau. We received reports from the public claiming that your shop has serious tax evasion issues. We are here to conduct an investigation! Please cooperate!" 0

The other man, a slim figure, walked directly to the counter and picked up the simple ledger Jiang Tao had left there, flipping through it with an audible click of his tongue. "Wow, this bookkeeping is quite 'simple,' isn't it? So many incomes without any receipts!" 0

The customers in the shop along with Old Master Liu and Wang Hao all tensed up. Tax evasion was a very serious crime in the 1980s; if proven true, fines and shop closures were mild consequences—there was a real risk of imprisonment! 0

Jiang Tao took a deep breath to calm himself down. He knew these men were not here for good reasons; they were deliberately looking for faults. In such situations, panicking or being confrontational would be futile. "Please have a seat," he offered as he brought over some chairs. "We are a small individual business that has just opened not long ago; many aspects may not be fully compliant yet. However, I assure you there is no intention of tax evasion! The ledger and receipts are right here; you can check them at your convenience." 0

Guo Zi Lian exchanged glances with Slim Guy but did not sit down; they immediately began their interrogation. 0

Guo Zi Lian pointed at an entry in the ledger: "This income here for repairing an imported recorder for twenty yuan—why is there no invoice?" 0

Jiang Tao explained patiently: "Comrade, that customer brought it in privately for repair and did not request an invoice at that time. Besides, as an Individual Business Owner, for such a small repair fee…" 0

"What regulations are you talking about?" Slim Guy interrupted him sharply. "As long as there is business income, taxes must be paid! There must be proof! This is clearly tax evasion!" 0

Guo Zi Lian then picked up several records of old appliances Jiang Tao had purchased: "What’s your basis for acquiring these old televisions and bicycles? Do you have purchase invoices? Without invoices, how can you prove your costs? I see you're selling these refurbished items at high prices; your profits must be substantial! Are you falsifying your costs?" 0

Jiang Tao maintained his composure: "Comrade, when I go to scrap stations or collect old items from residents, where would I get invoices? This is just how this industry operates…" 0

"Stop spinning tales!" Guo Zi Lian waved his hand impatiently. "I only recognize evidence! Without legal proof, your costs cannot be acknowledged! The income from selling refurbished products must be fully taxed!" 0

Their back-and-forth continued with each trying to pick apart every detail deliberately misinterpreting policies in order to pin the label of "tax evasion" on Jiang Tao. 0
