Jiang Tao understood. This task was no simple matter; it involved the crucial production line of a key enterprise in the city, and the pressure was immense. However, it was also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! If he could solve this problem, his reputation and status would be transformed, paving the way for him to engage in higher-end business dealings and expand his network effortlessly.
"Fortune favors the bold! I’m all in!" Jiang Tao resolved inwardly.
After a moment of contemplation, he said, "Director Li, Chief Engineer Zhang, I have a general understanding of the situation. Whether it can be repaired is hard to say right now; I need to see the specific machine and the damaged gear first to make a judgment. If it's convenient, can I accompany you to the factory now?"
"Absolutely! It’s very convenient!" Director Li exclaimed as if he had been granted a reprieve. "The car is outside, Master Jiang, please!"
Jiang Tao briefed Old Liu and Wang Hao briefly, grabbed his canvas bag containing essential tools, and followed Director Li and the others into the Volga car, speeding towards the City Textile Factory.
Upon arriving at the workshop of the City Textile Factory, they indeed found a massive and intricate production line quietly halted. Surrounding it were numerous anxious workers and technicians. Chief Engineer Zhang led Jiang Tao to the fault point and pointed at a disassembled gear about the size of a palm with a complex shape. "Master Jiang, look at this. It’s made of a special high-strength alloy with extremely high hardness; three teeth have broken off, making it impossible to engage."
Jiang Tao picked up the gear for a closer inspection and used his Ability to perform a "diagnosis." Instantly, a 3D structural diagram of the gear appeared in his mind, clearly showing where the teeth had broken. At the same time, information about its material composition, heat treatment process, and tooth profile precision vaguely came back to him.
"It’s definitely German-made; this precision requirement... tsk tsk, ordinary domestic machine tools can't produce this at all. Repairing it is out of the question; we can only replace it. But where can we find an exact match?" Jiang Tao furrowed his brow.
Seeing Jiang Tao's expression, both Director Li and Chief Engineer Zhang felt their hearts sink.
At that moment, an idea flashed through Jiang Tao's mind! He thought of his still-immature but highly promising "Part Manufacturing" ability! The last time he repaired a projector gear, although it was just ordinary alloy, he had gained some experience. This time, however, the gear's material was more specialized and its precision requirements were higher—undoubtedly hellish difficulty—but... perhaps he could give it a shot?
Taking a deep breath, he looked up at Director Li and Chief Engineer Zhang with newfound determination. "Director Li, Chief Engineer Zhang, repairing it is impossible. You won't find any substitutes domestically."
Disappointment washed over their faces.
"However," Jiang Tao continued with a shift in tone, "I might be able to... attempt to create one from scratch!"
"What?! Create one from scratch?" Both Director Li and Chief Engineer Zhang exclaimed simultaneously in disbelief. Replicating such high-precision imported parts made from special materials? How could that be possible!
"I have some knowledge of precision machining and materials science," Jiang Tao explained half-truthfully while attributing part of his confidence to his "knowledge reserve." "I can try analyzing its material and structure and then replicate it using existing materials and special processes. Of course, I can't guarantee success 100%, and it will take time; as for costs..."
"Costs are not an issue!" Director Li interrupted him immediately, grabbing Jiang Tao's hand excitedly. "Master Jiang! As long as you can make this gear and get the production line running again! We’ll cover any cost! Whatever materials or equipment you need, our factory will fully cooperate!"
Chief Engineer Zhang nodded vigorously in agreement. "Yes! Master Jiang! Whatever you need from our repair workshop—equipment or materials—you can use freely! We’ll even send two of our best technicians to assist you!"
"I won’t need equipment or extra hands for now," Jiang Tao waved his hand dismissively; he needed an independent space to utilize his Ability. "I require a quiet workspace where I won’t be disturbed, and... if possible, some scrap alloy or offcuts that are similar in material to this gear for experimentation." He needed to analyze the material first before attempting to use spatial energy for "printing" or "shaping."
"No problem! Absolutely no problem!" Director Li quickly ordered arrangements. Soon enough, they cleared out an independent workspace for Jiang Tao in a secluded area of the factory and delivered all relevant alloy materials they could find.
In the following days, Jiang Tao practically lived in this temporary workspace. He placed several damaged gear samples on his workbench and repeatedly used his Ability to "scan" and "analyze" them, committing their precise dimensions, tooth profiles, and microscopic material structures to memory. This process consumed an enormous amount of Mental Power and often left him with splitting headaches.
Then he began attempting to "manufacture." He selected scrap alloys with compositions closest to those of the original gear and tried to guide spatial energy through thought to melt down and purify them before shaping them according to his mental blueprint.
However, creating metal parts was far more difficult than manufacturing plastic gears—by more than tenfold! The melting point of metals is high; their structures are stable; controlling energy flow precisely was incredibly challenging.
On his first attempt, he output too much energy; the metal vaporized instantly! On his second attempt, halfway through shaping it became unstable due to poor energy control—the entire structure collapsed into a lump of scrap metal! On his third attempt, while the outer shape emerged correctly, its internal structure was porous and completely failed to meet strength standards!
One failure after another came with immense mental strain and frustrating results. Jiang Tao even contemplated giving up at one point. But when he thought of Director Li and the hopeful gazes of the workers, of Lin Wei's gentle encouragement, and of how this was a crucial step in advancing his career, he gritted his teeth and persevered.
