Zhou Jin was attending a class meeting to discuss travel routes.
“Alright,” Zou Xuemei said, “let’s vote.”
Zou Xuemei, the counselor and chair of the meeting, stubbornly narrowed down the proposed four or five travel routes to just the one she preferred, then announced it was time to vote.
“This is fake democracy!” someone protested.
“Yes,” Xue Mei replied, “any other opinions?”
Everyone exchanged glances, unsure of how to voice their thoughts. As expected, the original proposal passed: East Coast combined with Green Island would be the confirmed plan for the Graduation Trip.
Next, the organizing committee members were assigned various tasks, and before adjourning, Xue Mei stipulated that they must gather again next Sunday to report on their progress.
The group dispersed reluctantly. Zhou Jin wandered alone in the corridor; his assigned task was to investigate how many classmates would participate. He planned to send each student a letter with a return slip for their responses. It would be nice to type such a letter at home, but his computer had broken down yesterday, and he wasn’t sure if it could be fixed today.
Just as he thought about making a phone call, he passed by the office of the general affairs department. The large office was empty due to the holiday, but in a distant corner, a computer screen flickered quietly.
“Borrowing it should be fine,” Zhou Jin mused to himself.
He peeked into the office door; there wasn’t a soul in sight. Just then, he noticed a small tuft of hair move on the back of a long sofa against the wall.
“Someone’s here,” Zhou Jin thought and called out, “Excuse me, may I ask…”
The tuft of hair moved again as a figure stood up. The hair floated gently as she turned around, and Zhou Jin couldn’t help but feel delighted as he exclaimed, “Xiao Ya…”
Seeing Zhou Jin, Xiao Ya’s cheeks immediately flushed bright red. It turned out that during their last trip to Mogan Mountain, there had been a misunderstanding between them involving an accidental touch. Ever since returning from Mogan Mountain, Xiao Ya had been avoiding Zhou Jin whenever they crossed paths; she would lower her head and shyly dodge him. They were taking different classes with few credits together now, and whenever Zhou Jin tried to strike up a conversation with her, she would become flustered and find excuses to escape before they could talk much.
“What are you doing here?” Zhou Jin looked around; indeed, there was no one else in the office.
“I… I’m here as a Working Student…” Xiao Ya blinked nervously.
“What are you doing?” Zhou Jin walked over and took her small hand; she couldn’t pull away. “Are you afraid of me?”
Xiao Ya shook her head.
“Then why are you ignoring me?” Zhou Jin leaned closer to look at her, making Xiao Ya even more embarrassed.
“I… I… am not…”
“Not?” Zhou Jin gently caressed her cheek. “Then go on a date with me.”
“Don’t… you… you… stop joking… you have a girlfriend!” Xiao Ya tried to evade him but couldn’t manage to escape.
"What's the big deal? Don't you have a boyfriend too?" Zhou Jin said with a playful grin.
"I... I don't have one!" Xiao Ya replied, "Who said I have a boyfriend?"
"Don't have one? Huh?" Zhou Jin looked puzzled. "Then... what about A Xiong...?"
"We... we're not anything!" Xiao Ya insisted.
"Not anything?" Zhou Jin stuttered, "Huh? Then, then, then..."
Xiao Ya realized that Zhou Jin was referring to that day on the bus, and she felt even more embarrassed. "Anyway, it's not like that! I just... lost a bet to him... Oh! Don't ask anymore!"
