My name is Yang Jianyun, and I am a teacher at an ordinary university in Shandong.
I have always been a quiet person. After entering university, I immersed myself in academic research and stayed on to teach after earning my doctorate. At the age of 28, my enthusiastic colleague, Zhang Li, couldn't help but start to "concern" herself with my lifelong affairs.
"Yang Jianyun, you're almost 28 years old and still don't have a girlfriend. This can't go on!" Zhang Li said, leaning against my desk with a look of exasperation.
I looked up and smiled awkwardly. "Sister Zhang, I'm not very good at chatting with girls, and I don't know many people..."
"That's exactly the point!" Zhang Li's eyes lit up. "I have a friend named Liu Yun. She's very cheerful and pretty—definitely your type! How about I set you two up?"
To be honest, I didn't hold much hope at that moment. In my experience, lively and cheerful girls never seemed to have much interest in someone as reserved as me. But seeing the expectant look in Zhang Li's eyes, I nodded. "Then I’ll trouble you, Sister Zhang."
On Saturday afternoon, under Zhang Li's arrangement, I met Liu Yun at a café near the university. She was even more beautiful than I had imagined, with long black hair cascading over her shoulders and her eyes turning into crescent moons when she smiled. She wore a simple white T-shirt and jeans, giving off a casual and carefree vibe that was completely different from the demure image I had envisioned.
"Hello, I'm Liu Yun. Don't be nervous; just think of it as making a friend," she said, extending her hand with a cheerful voice.
I awkwardly shook her hand, feeling my palms sweat. "Hello, I'm Yang Jianyun."
"Sister Zhang told me you're a university teacher. What do you teach?" Liu Yun asked without hesitation.
"Computer Science, mainly Programming Design," I replied, my voice dropping unconsciously.
"Wow, you must be really smart!" Liu Yun exclaimed, giving me an exaggerated thumbs-up. "I'm a total computer idiot; I can only turn it on and off."
Watching her lively demeanor made my initial nervousness slowly fade away.
"And what about you? What do you do?" I mustered the courage to ask.
"I'm a dance teacher; I teach kids how to dance. On weekends, I also go to nursing homes to teach the elderly square dancing," Liu Yun said with a smile. "Oh, and I have a little shop where I sell handmade jewelry and small accessories. Although it doesn't earn much money, it's quite fun."
"You’re amazing! You can manage so many things at once," I genuinely praised her.
"Not at all, I'm just restless," Liu Yun said with a smile, waving her hand. "But I heard from Sister Zhang that you’re particularly diligent. You graduated from graduate school and stayed on as a teacher—that's truly impressive."
We chatted about everything, from school to work, from hobbies to family. Before we knew it, the lights outside had begun to twinkle.
"It's already dark. How about we go out for dinner together?" Liu Yun suddenly asked, glancing out the window.
I was taken aback; I hadn’t expected her to suggest dinner on our first meeting.
Seeing my hesitation, Liu Yun mischievously winked. "Don't overthink it. I just feel like we click in our conversation, and I'm getting hungry. It's just a meal."
And so, our first meeting extended from the afternoon into the evening.
During dinner, I noticed that Liu Yun had a particular fondness for spicy food and loved to chat while eating, embodying the spirit of a strong woman in everyday life. Being with her made me unconsciously relax my tense nerves.
