Liu Yun looked at me intently, "Are you really willing to make such sacrifices for me?"
"Of course, I love you, and I'm willing to give everything for you." I smiled and pinched her cheek. "Once I get a vasectomy, you won't have to take birth control pills anymore, which is better for your health."

Liu Yun's eyes turned red instantly. "Yang Jianyun, meeting you is the greatest fortune of my life."
Not long after our wedding, I went to the hospital for the vasectomy. The procedure went smoothly, and aside from some discomfort in the days following, it had little impact on me.
Liu Yun was deeply touched by my decision and took care of me meticulously after we got married. Our life was calm and happy; we spent weekends at her little shop or watching the children she taught dance. Each day felt fulfilling and rich.
Sometimes, when I saw friends posting pictures of their children, a hint of sadness would creep into my heart. But whenever that happened, I would remember everything Liu Yun had done for me—the small gestures of care and concern, the beautiful moments we shared together—and that sadness would dissipate.
Our marriage passed year by year like this. Without the cries of children, our home was always quiet and tidy. We had more time to spend with each other, traveling, learning new things, and enjoying our world together.
In the tenth year after our wedding, Liu Yun's dance school grew larger and began hiring new teachers. I was busy applying for a professorship and often worked late into the night. The time we spent together became less frequent, and our conversations turned simple and mechanical.
"What are we eating today?"
"Anything's fine; you decide."
"I have to get up early tomorrow; I'm going to sleep now."
"Okay, goodnight."
Such dialogues became the routine of our marriage.
One day in our twelfth year of marriage, Liu Yun suddenly said to me, "Yang Jianyun, have you ever thought about how lonely it might be for us in this life without children?"
I was taken aback and put down the newspaper in my hands. "What made you think of this all of a sudden?"
"Wasn't it supposed to be DINK?"
"It was just a casual question," Liu Yun smiled. "The kids I've been teaching lately are so adorable. Sometimes I think, how nice it would be if they were my own."
I walked over and put my arm around her shoulders. "How about we adopt one?"
Liu Yun shook her head. "Forget it, I was just saying that."
A year passed, and at the beginning of this year, Liu Yun started traveling frequently for work, claiming she needed to explore new dance teaching methods in other cities.
It was an ordinary Thursday afternoon when I got off work a little earlier than usual.
As I entered the house, it was quiet; Liu Yun hadn't returned yet.
I sent her a WeChat message: "I got home early today. What do you want for dinner? I'll go buy some groceries."
She replied quickly: "I'm a bit busy today; you can eat first, no need to wait for me."
Such conversations had become routine.
In the past year, Liu Yun had been as busy as a spinning top, often skipping dinner at home.
I had gotten used to eating alone, watching TV, and then grading papers late into the night.

She always rushed out and often forgot things.

At that moment, a folded piece of paper slipped out from the bag.
I bent down to pick it up and immediately saw "Obstetric and Gynecological Examination Report" printed on it.
"Obstetrics and Gynecology? Did Liu Yun go see a doctor?" My heart tightened as I opened the paper.
The header clearly stated "Liu Yun, Female, 39 years old," with a particularly eye-catching line below: "Pregnancy Test: Positive (12 weeks pregnant)."
