"Are you done causing a scene?" His voice was hoarse, and his eyes were fixed on me.
"Causin a scene?" I looked at him. "Chen Zimo, who exactly is making a scene here?"
"Why did it have to come to this? Now the whole company knows! How am I supposed to face Ruo Ruo?!" His tone was agitated. "I admit I was wrong to cheat, but what did Ruo Ruo do to deserve this? She's pregnant! Why did you have to hurt her? She's just an innocent girl!"
I couldn't help but laugh in anger. This man was still defending his mistress at this point.
"And what about me? Did you think of me when you cheated? Did you consider the pain I would feel? While you were out there enjoying yourself, did you ever think of me as the innocent one?"
He seemed taken aback, lowering his head. After a moment, he suddenly looked up, as if he had made a significant decision.
"Lin Xi, are you sure you want a divorce? Don't regret it. You can't have children; if you leave me, who will want you?"
"Don't worry about me. Whether I regret it or not has nothing to do with you," I replied coldly.
He suddenly softened again, his tone pleading. "Lin Xi, I only treated Bai Ruo well because of the child. I love you! After all these years together, can't you give me one more chance?"
"Once unfaithful, a hundred times unnecessary," I interrupted him. "You want to take responsibility for her; I'll help you with that. Let's get divorced."
In the end, Chen Zimo signed the papers.
Outside the civil affairs bureau, I saw Bai Ruo standing there with her large belly, waiting for Chen Zimo. When she spotted me, her smugness was unmistakable.
Chen Zimo walked over and supported her; she immediately linked her arm with his and sweetly called him "hubby."
Putting on a show for me? I slipped on my sunglasses and paused as I walked past them. Taking off my sunglasses, I cast a disdainful glance at Bai Ruo's belly and said, "I wish your family of three a lifetime of happiness."
Then I walked away without looking back.
Was it graceful? With forty percent of his company's shares and several properties in hand, I'd say it was quite graceful.
I didn't return to Su Qing's place; instead, I used my share of the money to buy myself a spacious apartment with a river view. I had studied oil painting in college but had given up my dream for Chen Zimo. Now, I could finally pick it up again. I started painting again and even planned to open my own gallery.
Life seemed to be back on track. Although I occasionally thought of Chen Zimo, that marriage felt like something from a past life.
Until one day at a class reunion, I encountered him again—Ji Yan.
The high school class group had been quiet for a long time when suddenly the class monitor's message set off a stir.
The monitor's voice message exclaimed: "Classmates! Ji Yan is back in the country! Let's gather during National Day in S City to welcome brother Ji!"
" brother Ji said he would cover the bill! Everyone just needs to bring their appetite!"
The group chat instantly buzzed with excitement.
"Wow, brother Ji is back? I have to go!"
"I haven't seen him in years!"
The class monitor even tagged me: "Lin Xi, you used to be brother Ji's deskmate, you have to come!"
I hesitated for a moment. Just then, Su Qing's video call came through, and she was making exaggerated expressions on the other end. "Lin Xi! Are you going to the gathering? I heard Ji Yan is super handsome now! As his former deskmate, don't you want to see him?"
"I'm not going, I'm tired." I've been busy with gallery matters these past few days, and I really was exhausted.
"Come on, please~ Just go with me~" Su Qing started to act cute.
In the end, I couldn't resist...
On National Day, Su Qing drove me to the agreed-upon venue. Wow, this place is definitely not cheap.
