After watching a movie and having a meal, everything went smoothly, even a bit… too naturally? It felt as if we were meant to interact this way from the start.
It wasn't until we truly "ran into" someone familiar at the entrance of the mall—Aunt Li from my mom's workplace—that things took a turn.
Aunt Li was notorious for being a gossip machine.
“Oh my, isn’t that Xiao Qiao?” Aunt Li’s eyes lit up as she scanned between us, “And who is this…?”
My heart leaped into my throat, but Jiang Chi stepped forward with a standard son-in-law smile. “Hello, Auntie, I’m Xiao Qiao’s boyfriend, Jiang Chi.”
“Boyfriend?!” Aunt Li’s voice shot up an octave. “Oh my! Xiao Qiao has a boyfriend! When did this happen? This young man is quite handsome!”
“We just started dating not long ago,” Jiang Chi replied nonchalantly. “Xiao Qiao is a bit shy and hasn’t had the chance to tell her family yet.”
“Oh, there’s nothing to be shy about! What a wonderful thing!” Aunt Li patted my arm, grinning from ear to ear. “If your mom finds out, she’ll be over the moon! Xiao Jiang, you must come over to Auntie’s house more often!”
Jiang Chi smiled and agreed.
Once Aunt Li walked away, satisfied, I finally let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding; my legs felt a bit weak.
“Nice job, Jiang Chi. Your acting skills are impressive,” I said sincerely.
“Basic operation,” Jiang Chi replied proudly, tilting his chin up. “Let’s go; I’ll take you home.”
On the way back, I gazed out at the rushing scenery outside, feeling somewhat unsettled.
“By the way,” Jiang Chi suddenly spoke up, “next weekend is my mom’s birthday; there’s a family gathering. You… have to come with me.”
I turned to him sharply. “Huh? Meeting the parents? Isn’t that a bit soon?”
“What else? I have to ‘report’ back to my family, right?” He glanced at me. “Don’t worry; it’s just a meal. My family is pretty easygoing.”
I felt hesitant inside. Wasn’t this playing things a bit too big by meeting his family?
On the day of going to Jiang Chi's house, I was so nervous that my palms were sweating. I looked in the mirror repeatedly, feeling like something was off. If I dressed too formally, it might seem forced; if too casually, it could come off as disrespectful.
Jiang Chi remained calm, leaning against the door and urging me on. “Come on, Su Xiao Qiao; even an ugly daughter-in-law has to meet her in-laws—besides, you’re not ugly.”
I glared at him. “Can you be more considerate with your words?”
When we arrived at the entrance of Jiang Chi's villa, I took a deep breath. I knew his family well since I used to visit often, but this was my first time coming as his "girlfriend."
The door was opened by Jiang Chi's mother, Aunt Zhou. She was well-groomed and had a gentle demeanor. Upon seeing me, she paused for a moment before breaking into a bright smile.
"Oh my, Xiao Qiao is here! Come in, come in!" Aunt Zhou enthusiastically took my hand. "A Chi has finally come to his senses! I thought he would spend his whole life with his games!"
She pulled me inside, and I awkwardly smiled, "Hello, Aunt Zhou."
In the living room sat several people: Jiang Chi's father, Uncle Jiang, along with a few relatives I didn't recognize. Jiang Chi wrapped his arm around my shoulder and nudged me forward, introducing me, "Dad, Mom, everyone, this is my girlfriend, Su Xiao Qiao."
In an instant, all eyes were on me—some curious, some scrutinizing, and some surprised. I felt like a monkey being observed at the zoo.
Uncle Jiang adjusted his glasses and nodded, "Hmm, have a seat."
The atmosphere felt a bit awkward. During dinner, Aunt Zhou kept serving me food and checking on me with such warmth that it was almost overwhelming.
"Xiao Qiao, how did you meet A Chi? How long have you known each other?" asked an astute-looking aunt with a smile.
