Under the night sky, with faint starlight, the Azure Water Cold Pool was calm and undisturbed, like a bright mirror reflecting the peaks above, appearing exceptionally beautiful. After a moment, a gust of mountain wind suddenly blew by, creating delicate ripples across the water's surface that spread out in gentle circles. The stars reflected on the water danced lightly, seemingly revealing a silent smile.
The cool breeze brushed against them on this tranquil night after the battle, making one feel particularly comfortable.
For a while, neither of them spoke. Under the starry sky, they stood together in silence, with the clear pool in front of them and their shadows cast on the ground behind them.
After a while, Ten Thousand Swords in One suddenly spoke up, "Senior Brother, you called me up here to meet for some reason?"
Dao Xuan replied, "It's nothing too urgent. Master woke up once before and asked about you. I noticed you hadn't returned to the mountain for quite some time, so I wanted to see you." After pausing for a moment, he continued, "Master has already gone back to sleep now; let him rest well. We can go see him later."
Ten Thousand Swords in One nodded and said, "That works."
Just as they were talking, suddenly from beneath the Azure Water Cold Pool, there came a roar like thunder. The ground around them seemed to tremble slightly as the vast surface of the Cold Pool began to shake violently. The rippling waves quickly transformed into surging tides. Then at the center of the Cold Pool, the water surface suddenly sank down to form a massive whirlpool. Moments later, a gigantic head emerged from beneath the water of the Cold Pool, letting out a fierce roar towards the night sky.
The sound shook the surroundings and echoed repeatedly, as if even the towering peaks were gently resonating with it.
The giant beast was the Azure Water Qilin. Watching it move effortlessly in the water, swaying its head and tail, it suddenly seemed to notice the two figures standing on the shore. It turned its head sharply, followed by a roar, and its massive body leaped into the air, charging fiercely toward the shore.
This sudden display of power was accompanied by a spray of water, causing Dao Xuan and Ten Thousand Swords in One to instinctively retreat several steps. Then they heard a loud splash as waves crashed down where they had just been standing, soaking a large patch of ground.
Ten Thousand Swords in One chuckled, "Nine Nether Demon Barrier, you're back again!"
On the shore by the pond, a colossal creature now stood, eyeing them with a fierce expression. However, the gaze in its enormous eyes was surprisingly gentle, even carrying a hint of joy.
Ten Thousand Swords in One took the lead and walked over, with Dao Xuan following closely behind. The two approached the Azure Water Qilin.
Next to this ancient beast, the two looked tiny, barely reaching its leg height. The Azure Water Qilin turned its head and let out a low growl. Water dripped continuously from its wet body as it scanned the two before finally settling its gaze on Ten Thousand Swords in One.
With a thunderous low grunt, the Azure Water Qilin stared wide-eyed and extended its massive head forward.
If an ordinary person were to witness such a scene, they would likely be terrified. However, Dao Xuan and Ten Thousand Swords in One remained calm. Ten Thousand Swords in One even smiled and reached out to pat the Azure Water Qilin's head.
"Nine Nether Demon Barrier, thanks to you today! If it weren't for your mighty presence, we might not have won this battle!" Ten Thousand Swords in One said sincerely.
The Azure Water Qilin mumbled something and snorted loudly before casting a condescending glance at him. Its eyes were filled with arrogance as if to say "your words are meaningless." It then flicked its tail and ignored the two, walking over to a large tree on the shore where it lay down with its eyes half-closed and let out a big yawn.
Ten Thousand Swords in One and Dao Xuan exchanged amused glances. Dao Xuan looked at the Azure Water Qilin and smiled, "It seems Nine Nether Demon Barrier has always been closer to you. It's strange; we've practically grown up together under our master’s guidance, playing around here at Tongfeng. Even when we were young and did silly things like throwing stones at Nine Nether Demon Barrier together, yet all these years, it has always favored you while never wanting to get close to me."
Ten Thousand Swords in One laughed heartily and then thought for a moment before saying, "I suppose it's because later on you focused on your cultivation and came to the Azure Water Cold Pool less frequently. Unlike me, who has always been wild at heart, distracted during training and loved sneaking out to play. Over time, Nine Nether Demon Barrier naturally became familiar with me. I’ve certainly faced my share of scolding from our master for that."
Dao Xuan shook his head and looked at Ten Thousand Swords in One with amusement. "You just love to ramble. You can't speak like that later on. If other brothers hear you say that you’re less focused during cultivation yet still surpass them in skill, how will they feel? Isn’t that just indirectly insulting them?"
Ten Thousand Swords in One paused and said, "Yeah, it seems to make sense."
Dao Xuan replied irritably, "Nonsense!"
Ten Thousand Swords in One laughed and waved his hand, saying, "Got it, got it, from now on I'll just speak my mind."
At that moment, Azure Water Qilin, who was lying not far from the two, suddenly murmured again, seemingly annoyed by their chatter. It turned its head towards the water surface, and before long, a series of snoring sounds could be heard; it had fallen asleep in an instant.
Both Dao Xuan and Ten Thousand Swords in One were startled by this and looked at Azure Water Qilin a few more times. After a moment, Ten Thousand Swords in One shook his head and laughed, "How can Nine Nether Demon Barrier fall asleep so quickly?"
Dao Xuan said, "Maybe it's because it's old. Nine Nether Demon Barrier was captured by Qingye Patriarch back in the day. It's been living on our Azure Cloud Mountain for over a thousand years."
A look of admiration appeared on Ten Thousand Swords in One's face as he said, "That makes sense."
Dao Xuan looked up at the night sky and said, "It's getting late; let's go up to Yuqing Palace and see Master."
"Okay."
The two turned around and walked together, stepping onto the stone steps while chatting softly as they headed towards the tall Yuqing Palace. A gentle breeze blew by, and the night sky was dotted with stars. The two walked side by side; despite the heavy shadows of the mountains and the enveloping darkness, their brilliance seemed undiminished. As starlight fell upon them, they walked together—calm yet determined—at that moment, it felt as if nothing in this world could obstruct their steps forward together.
