The Legend of the Immortals Prequel: Wilderness Journey
Clouds drifted, shadows danced, and the thousand-year spirit peak stood tall Between the Earth, witnessing the vicissitudes of human life and the cycles of the sun and moon.
On this night, the bright moon hung high in the sky, shining like a giant white jade disc, suspended above the night sky of Rainbow Bridge, appearing particularly magnificent. The Rainbow Bridge on Tongfeng spanned across the void, its grandeur immense, seeming to pass through the bright moon from afar, like a path leading straight up to the heavens.
As midnight approached, on top of the Rainbow Bridge, Ten Thousand Swords in One, Azure Pine, Tian Buyi, and Shang Zhengliang had all arrived, standing side by side at the pinnacle of the Rainbow Bridge. The moonlight poured down upon them like water, making it seem as if they stood within the moon itself, exuding poetic charm.
Before long, footsteps echoed again, and a figure walked steadily from one side of the Rainbow Bridge towards them, it was Dao Xuan.
A smile appeared on Ten Thousand Swords in One's face as he welcomed him over, but before he could speak, he suddenly noticed that two women were following behind Dao Xuan, namely Shuiyue and Su Ru. He couldn't help but exclaim in surprise, "What are you two doing here?"
Shuiyue and Su Ru hurried over. It seemed they already knew what Ten Thousand Swords in One and the others were about to do. Given how perilous their journey had been so far, both looked serious, their eyes filled with concern.
Su Ru appeared particularly anxious; upon seeing Ten Thousand Swords in One, her eyes reddened as if she were about to cry. She said, "Brother Wan, why do you have to undertake such a dangerous task?"
Ten Thousand Swords in One smiled slightly and was about to offer some comforting words when he suddenly saw Shuiyue step forward and pull Su Ru beside her. In a low voice, she admonished, "Don't be foolish! Although Brother Wan's journey is dangerous, it is for our Azure Cloud's Eternal Legacy. What a heroic act this is! Should we cower in fear of mere life and death? What do you think this places Brother Wan and our other fellow disciples?"
Ten Thousand Swords in One laughed heartily, his smile carefree. "Thank you for your praise, Sister Shuiyue."
On Shuiyue's exquisite and beautiful face, her pair of bright eyes seemed to reflect only the image of this elegant man in white before her; his figure had already imprinted deep within her heart. Taking a deep breath, she stepped back slightly and declared loudly: "Four senior brothers, regarding the matter of Wilderness Journey, Master has informed me and Sister Su and entrusted us to come here to see you off. This journey into the wilderness is fraught with dangers; with high mountains and long roads ahead, perilous challenges await us. Moreover, there are many cruel demons from evil sects lurking about. However, true heroes should look down upon such dangers; as disciples of Qingyun, we shall not fall behind! Here I have brought my master's specially brewed wine called ‘Azure Bamboo’ for you all to enjoy as you embark on your journey."
Once Shuiyue finished speaking, all four of them listened attentively. After she concluded, Ten Thousand Swords in One first cupped his fists together and said, "Thank you, Master Zhenwu."
Behind him, Azure Pine, Tian Buyi, and Shang Zhengliang also bowed in gratitude with solemn expressions.
Nearby, Su Ru approached with a jar of old wine and several cups ready to hand them to Ten Thousand Swords in One, but unexpectedly he reached out to stop her while turning to Shuiyue. "Sister Shuiyue, please wait a moment; perhaps there is still one more person who will arrive before midnight."
Shuiyue was momentarily taken aback but nodded quickly. "Alright."
Thus, everyone waited atop the Rainbow Bridge. Dao Xuan exchanged glances with Ten Thousand Swords in One, who understood and moved aside with him for a quiet conversation.
The others stood separately on another side. After placing the jar and cups aside, Su Ru suddenly froze upon seeing a familiar figure standing at the edge of those about to depart.
"Tian Buyi? What are you doing here?" she asked with surprise as she walked over to him.
Upon arriving, Su Ru only noticed Ten Thousand Swords in One and hardly looked at anyone else. Tian Buyi saw her the moment she appeared, and since then, his heart had been beating a little faster. Suddenly being noticed by Su Ru, who walked over and directly asked him a question, made Tian Buyi's chubby face flush slightly, feeling inexplicably nervous.
"I, I..." For some reason, Tian Buyi realized that even when facing the life-and-death matters that his senior from Ten Thousand Swords in One had asked him about, he had never felt as awkward and tense as he did now in front of this charming, lovely, beautiful, and gentle girl. He didn't know how to respond.
Su Ru seemed to think of something again; a hint of sympathy appeared in her bright eyes as she gently said, "Alright, I know it's not easy for you to speak. You don't have to force yourself." At this point, she suddenly frowned and looked at Tian Buyi again, her expression becoming somewhat serious. "Could it be that you... are also going?"
Tian Buyi gazed at her beautiful face and suddenly felt a surge of pride. He felt that no matter how many difficulties lay ahead, he was unafraid as long as he could earn her special regard. He nodded heavily and said decisively, "Yes!"
Su Ru stared at him blankly; without realizing it, her eyes turned slightly red. In a voice barely audible to anyone but Tian Buyi, she said softly with a hint of sorrow, "You all... why must you do the most dangerous and difficult things in the world? Why can't you all stay here on Azure Cloud Mountain, cultivate peacefully, and live a quiet life? Do you know that once you leave, you might never see each other again? I..."
At this point, her voice suddenly choked up, her shoulders trembling slightly. Under the moonlight, a crystal tear fell from the corner of her eye like the most beautiful pearl in the world, sliding down her snow-white cheek.
Tian Buyi felt a sudden pain in his heart. Instinctively reaching out his hand, he only got halfway when he saw Su Ru quietly turn around to glance toward Ten Thousand Swords in One and softly say, "Wan Shixiong is exceptionally talented; given time, he will surely be among the best. But if something unexpected happens on this journey... what if..."
Her eyes were filled with worry now, and she couldn't finish her sentence.
Tian Buyi suddenly felt a rush of blood to his head and blurted out, "Don't worry; I'm here!"
Su Ru was taken aback and turned to look at him. "What?" Perhaps surprised for a moment, she forgot that Tian Buyi had suddenly become much more fluent.
Tian Buyi couldn't care less about that now; he felt a surge of passion rising in his heart and spoke earnestly: "Su Shimei, just rest assured. On this journey to the wilderness, I will protect Wan Shixiong completely. No matter how dangerous or difficult it gets with demons or monsters involved, as long as I have my Crimson Flame Sword in hand, anyone who wants to harm Wan Shixiong will have to step over my dead body first!"
Su Ru's body trembled slightly as if shocked into silence. After a moment, her face paled suddenly; she reached out to cover Tian Buyi's mouth with her hand. Then feeling both annoyed and anxious, her lips quivered as if she were about to cry again. She stamped her foot angrily at Tian Buyi and shouted, "You... you’re crazy! What nonsense!"
As soon as she finished speaking, she turned back and spat several times on the ground while pressing her hands against her chest repeatedly saying: "It's all nonsense; none of it is serious! Lord help us; please don’t believe it; everything just now was nonsense."
Out of the corner of her eye, Su Ru caught sight of Tian Buyi standing beside her with a silly grin on his face—so foolish that it made her furious enough to want to slap his chubby face. But then she thought that soon this short and chubby guy would be leaving for the wilderness on an uncertain journey where they might never meet again.
Suddenly feeling soft-hearted for no reason at all, when she looked back at Tian Buyi again, there was a hint of tenderness and concern in her eyes as she whispered: "You... you must take care of yourself."
Tian Buyi replied with an "Mm" sound and simply nodded in agreement.
Su Ru turned to walk towards her senior sister Shuiyue but after taking just two steps couldn't help but look back at Tian Buyi again. She saw him still standing there staring at her intently with a somewhat silly smile on his lips.
Suddenly biting her lip without knowing why her heart raced unexpectedly—perhaps it was because the moonlight was too bright and beautiful that night. The chubby boy stood there grinning foolishly under the pure moonlight; yet that smile deeply imprinted itself into her heart like the moonlight itself.
“Tian Fatty, don’t you die either!” Su Ru suddenly spoke, shouting to Tian Buyi, “Live well and come back…”
Tian Buyi scratched his head and then laughed, nodding heavily, “Okay.”

“Going to the wilderness is fraught with dangers. Do you have a plan for how to proceed?” Under the moonlight, Dao Xuan looked at Ten Thousand Swords in One and asked softly.
Ten Thousand Swords in One smiled and replied, “Senior Brother, don’t worry. This matter is of great importance; I have thought it through carefully.”
Dao Xuan nodded slowly and said, “You are clever and resourceful, so I naturally feel at ease. However, the wilderness is not an ordinary place. I’m not worried about anything else; I just fear that your temperament is too strong and sharp. If things go awry and human strength is exhausted, you must not force it. It’s best to retreat when the opportunity arises. Remember, as long as the green mountains remain, there will be no worry about firewood. Even if the Wilderness is perilous, there will always be opportunities to return in the future.”
Ten Thousand Swords in One nodded and said, “Yes, I will remember.”
Dao Xuan looked at him deeply for a moment and then said word by word, “Come back alive.”
Ten Thousand Swords in One smiled without speaking, his gaze gentle.
After a moment, the two brothers simultaneously looked up to see a bright full moon hanging high above. The moonlight was like water, cascading down to the earth, illuminating the two standing side by side. In that moment, it was dazzlingly brilliant, making it hard to look directly at them.
