As he stepped into the backyard, the number of monks increased. The monk who had been leading Jiang Chen suddenly stopped and said, “Benefactor, you may look around here freely. I have other matters to attend to, so I cannot accompany you.”
“Please, Elder, go ahead,” Jiang Chen replied with a smile, appearing casual and unconcerned.
After saying this, the monk took the middle-aged couple and their child through a small door in the west corridor, entering another courtyard.
Jiang Chen wandered around the courtyard, observing that three sides were lined with side halls, each housing statues of the Buddha. Monks were either cleaning or reciting scriptures and meditating inside. A few monks were practicing a dance in the courtyard, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and harmony.
When Jiang Chen reached the west corridor and attempted to pass through the small door to enter another courtyard, a monk stepped forward to block his path, stating that entry was not permitted. The reason was not elaborated.
Jiang Chen smiled lightly. The young monk in front of him suddenly felt dizzy; it was as if his vision blurred momentarily. When he regained his senses, he muttered to himself, “What am I doing here?” and then went back to his own tasks.
As for Jiang Chen, he had already crossed the threshold and entered the courtyard marked “No Entry for Idlers.”
This courtyard was empty and spacious but very clean. In the center stood a stone table surrounded by four stone stools. On the table lay a Buddhist scripture, half-opened and held down by a smooth stone. To the east was a single room with its door ajar.
Jiang Chen chose not to enter the room but sat down beside the stone table, reading the scripture while listening intently.
Inside the room, the middle-aged couple was pleading with a high monk known as “Smartphone.” Jiang Chen listened closely and began to understand their situation.
The couple hailed from Bao Bei City. Their daughter was a child star named Zhao Lanping, who had grown up under the spotlight. Although they had ordinary jobs initially, they stopped working once their daughter was discovered by talent scouts due to her beauty and charm. They became her managers because life in showbiz could be lucrative yet perilous; they needed to protect her.

The largest entertainment company in Bao Bei City was run by an underground boss named Du Chufeng. Zhao Lanping finally managed to connect with him but ended up being exploited without any benefits. Afterward, Du Chufeng simply brushed off the incident as if nothing had happened, leaving Zhao Lanping feeling used.
