"Hey! Big Casanova, I was just joking, why are you mad?" Xia Ying shouted at me from behind. Yes, I was mad. I tried to control my emotions as I walked back to the classroom, forcing a smile as I sat down. "Actually, I just wanted to go to the bathroom. How could I be mad? I'm happy for you; congratulations on finally having someone chase after you, you tomboy." I suppressed the fire inside me while talking to her. She seemed skeptical. "Really? Your actions and expression didn't look like someone who was in a hurry to go to the bathroom." "Mind your own business! No... I was just anxious." Just as I was about to lose my temper again, I held it back. "So why are you back now? Go!" Xia Ying seemed to know I was brushing her off and teased me. "I don't want to go now; I've held it in. By the way, did you read Ouyang's letter?" I wanted to see what she thought. "No, I threw it away. Isn't it lying quietly in the trash can?" Xia Ying pointed at the trash can. "Why didn't you read it?" She confused me. Xia Ying casually replied, "First, he's not suitable for me. Second, I'm not suitable for him. Do you understand?" "Then why did you say you liked him earlier..." I asked her in confusion. She shook her head with a smile and said, "Ah! My brain must have short-circuited," and then ignored me. I breathed a sigh of relief; it was strange why I felt so nervous about her and Ouyang's situation. Could it be that... no way, no way! But Ouyang would probably be heartbroken; hey, this shouldn't count as schadenfreude.
Before I knew it, self-study class had arrived, and we were heading to the sports department for training. As soon as I stepped out, I ran into Ouyang; he must have been waiting for me on purpose. "Ouyang, how have you been?" I clasped my hands together in greeting. "Alright, alright, enough with the nonsense. Did Xia Ying read that letter?" Ouyang asked eagerly. "How would I know? Anyway, I gave it to her." With that, I shoved my hands into my pockets and walked ahead; he followed behind me. "Did you introduce me to her?" he asked as he caught up with me. As we walked, I replied, "I did! 'Do you know our basketball team's handsome Ouyang?' She knows, and then I praised you so much that she almost thought you were a god." Hehe, sorry Ouyang! Ouyang smiled shyly and said, "I'm not that great..." Let him enjoy his moment; if he gets hurt later, he can't blame me.
After arriving at the gymnasium, I noticed Ouyang was smiling the whole time. Seeing him like this made it hard for me to shatter his dream. Sigh! But there was no choice! Dreams are beautiful, but reality is cruel; Xia Ying's actions were also responsible towards Ouyang. After school, while pushing my bike out of the school gate, "Xiang Jie!" Sha Xiaomei ran over. "A Fei... what's up?" Sha Xiaomei said a bit shyly. "Not bad; I'm slowly recovering. In a few days, I'll be able to take off this special eye mask and see things again—like our school beauty." I joked with her. "Then... I'm relieved! Help me give this to him." She took out a box about the size of a pencil case from her backpack and said, "And... tell him that I miss him." With that, she turned and ran off. Sigh! Seeing these two sweethearts made me want to fall in love too; yet here I am playing middleman for them! I hopped on my bike, put on my headphones, and listened to Tang Yuzhe's "The Game of Passing Messages" on my way home!
Once home, my first stop was A Fei's house with Sha Xiaomei's box in hand. What could be inside this box? Shouldn't... I take a peek for A Fei? No way; snooping is wrong! Actually looking wouldn't hurt... In the end, my rationality defeated my curiosity as I handed the box over to A Fei. He happily placed it aside and said, “Hey hey hey! Open it up and take a look!” My curiosity peaked again as A Fei fumbled with the box while saying to me: “Come on now; if I open it up and can't see anything anyway until this protective cover comes off in a couple of weeks.” He saw right through me! “Who wants to look? You keep it for yourself; I'm leaving now! Also, Sha Xiaomei asked me to tell you she misses you.” As I stood up ready to leave, he added: “By the way, our team is starting training for the City High League selection soon; we'll finalize the participant list in five days.” Suddenly A Fei's previously smiling face stiffened: “Yeah, got it.” Looks like A Fei and I really can't fight side by side this time.
Back home after turning on my computer and playing a track called “srrysrry,” SJ's electronic dance music was super powerful! I cranked up the volume on my computer speakers and enjoyed the strong impact of sound and vision. “Jie! Are you crazy? Aren't you just disturbing everyone? Turn that off!” Mom couldn't take it anymore and yelled at me. Quickly lowering the volume and putting on headphones while logging onto QQ in invisible mode—Xue Er wasn't online but Cookie was there. “Hey! Cookie! Have you eaten?” I greeted her but wait?? She logged in from a computer! When I sent her a video invite she rejected it; when I sent again she rejected it again—my heart couldn't take it anymore! No choice but to send a voice invite instead; after a while she picked up. “Hello hello hello! Cookie! It's Su from Soda; please respond if you hear this.” There seemed to be silence on the other end before she replied in a very strange and unnatural voice: “Hello, I'm Cookie.” Wow! Clearly using a fake voice with me—how untrustworthy! “I have something else going on so I'm logging off now; bye!” Immediately after ending the voice call since I'm invisible she thought I'd really logged off too—she sent three messages without getting a reply before logging off herself too—huh? She logged off after me? Does she only chat with me?
The next day at school, I found Xia Ying wasn't at her desk but her backpack was there. Turning around saw Shuai Dong and Pang Hao discussing something. “Shuai Dong, Pang Hao—what national affairs are you studying now?” As I dropped my backpack and walked over they said: “Jie! You're just in time; let me tell you something interesting—Ouyang Shangqiang from Class One just called Xia Ying out at the door; his face was so red like a monkey's butt—it’s obvious he went out there to confess!” Shuai Dong and Pang Hao laughed together: “And Zhang Yirong and Gu Mei Jiao were worried about what Ouyang Shangqiang might do with Xia Ying so they followed him out too—Three Sisters vs Shy Guy—wonder if Ouyang Shangqiang can handle it!” What?! Ouyang called Xia Ying out to confess!! Without knowing where my impulse came from—I dashed out of the classroom with Shuai Dong and Pang Hao following behind me as we ran downstairs searching for them until we found them huddled in a corner.
“Xia... Xia Ying? Can your two sisters step aside for a moment? I've got something to say,” Ouyang nervously stammered as he trembled all over. “Rongrong, Mei Jiao—you guys go ahead; I'm fine,” Xia Ying told her two friends before they left: “Okay then—we'll be nearby; if anything happens just shout loudly—and hurry up or you'll be late for class.” What on earth?! It’s not nighttime in an alley—it's broad daylight at school—what could happen? No need to shout either—besides Ouyang is particularly shy and honest.
“Xia Ying—I hope you've read that letter Xiang Jie gave you because it's all my heartfelt words—I... like you.” Ouyang lowered his head blushing deeply as he spoke these words which made my fists clench unconsciously upon hearing them.
Xia Ying casually replied: “Nope—I threw it directly into the trash.” Ouyang froze for a moment before slowly lifting his head: “Why didn’t you read it? Xia Ying—give me one chance please—I... really like you...”
“Ouyang,” she said seriously, “firstly thank you for your admiration but we really aren't suited for each other; sometimes I'm quite temperamental—you wouldn't be able to handle it.”
“I can accept your temper—I will definitely do everything possible to tolerate you and make you happy—is that okay...” Ouyang still wouldn’t give up when Shuai Dong whispered behind me: “Wow! Didn't expect Ouyang Shangqiang would be so infatuated.” Hmph! Infatuated? This is being shameless—she made herself clear yet he keeps talking nonsense—his skin is incredibly thick!
“Ouyang,” Xia Ying straightforwardly stated: “Let’s be honest—I’m not attracted to you—not because you're not good enough—but because you're not my type.”
“What do you think is wrong with me? I'll change!” Ouyang continued struggling desperately while Xia Ying grew annoyed: “Ouyang—you think what’s good about me can change? If you keep this up there won't even be friendship left between us—think about it yourself.” With that she turned around ready to leave.
“Xia Ying! Give me one chance please!” Ouyang shouted from behind.
“I’ll say this once more—the last time—we're not suited for each other—don’t make me dislike you—a boy shouldn’t be so clingy!” Without looking back she walked away.
“Well—the show’s over—it’s time for us to go too.” Suddenly feeling great mood as I turned around saw Ouyang standing there frozen like a wooden statue—with an expression that looked like he might cry—sigh! No wonder this kid has taken such a big hit.
Back in class Xia Ying was playing on her phone as if nothing had happened: “Tomboy—what are you doing?” I sat down beside her.
“Mind your own business!” she rolled her eyes at me.
“Didn’t Ouyang Shangqiang just call you out confessing?” Acting oblivious as if nothing happened.
“Oh wow—you’re well-informed now huh? From now on just call me ‘Informed’ then—and what about it? Sigh! No choice—it’s just because of my charm!” While fiddling with her bangs.
I scoffed: “So are you two officially dating now?”
“Yeah! That guy is really nice—good temper and honest—not like some people who only know how to talk nonsense—and everyone hates them,” Xia Ying replied arrogantly.
“Who talks nonsense? Who’s hated by everyone? You’re worse than me—not ladylike at all!”
“Oh come on—isn’t that admitting your own faults?”
“You...” Sigh! Why does this girl always manage to infuriate me half-to-death?
During self-study class while heading towards the gymnasium saw Ouyang walking slowly ahead with his head down like a ghost.
“Ouyang!” Running over but he ignored me—I reached him only to find him dazed with vacant eyes—forget it—I won’t bother him anymore; let him heal slowly by himself.
During training at the gym he also seemed absent-minded when Teacher Qiu noticed his unusual behavior: “Ouyang Shangqiang—you need focus during training—the City High League is coming soon—you must practice well.”
“Yes... yes...” Ouyang responded absentmindedly.
“Xiang Jie!” At the end of school, Sha Xiaomei called out to me again, “Class Flower, what instructions do you have?” Sha Xiaomei hesitated, wanting to say something but stopping short. “Never mind! Tell A Fei that I miss him very much.” With that, she turned and ran away. I vaguely felt that Sha Xiaomei seemed to have something on her mind. What could it be?
