At the entrance of Lake City Park, I found Pang Hao looking around. "Pang Hao, where's Shuai Dong?" I walked over to ask. "Ah! You scared me! You came without a word. Shuai Dong was forced by his dad to go to his grandma's house. By the way, there might be a surprise later," Pang Hao said with a mischievous smile at me and A Fei, leaving us both puzzled. We exchanged glances and followed Pang Hao into the park. Before long, we arrived at the cherry blossom grove, where the fragrant blossoms were in full bloom. We found a stone bench to sit on. "Hey, isn't it a bit strange for three big boys to be sitting side by side on a stone bench in this cherry blossom grove?" I remarked. Pang Hao chuckled and said, "Don't worry, Xia Ying and the Three Sisters are also in the park; they'll probably come over soon."
"What!" I nearly fell off the stone bench. "I just ran into those three on the way here. They asked me to invite you guys out to play at Lake City Park." Pang Hao revealed everything. What did Xia Ying and her friends want with us? Did they... want to date us? Impossible; that dead girl Xia Ying is like a tomboy and definitely wouldn't date... Just as I was thinking this, Xia Ying and the Three Sisters appeared! "Cheng Fei, Jie!" Zhang Yirong rushed over to greet us. Oh, I seemed to understand; it was Zhang Yirong who wanted to get close to A Fei. Xia Ying pulled me and Pang Hao along as we walked over to sit by the rockery. "Big romantic, will A Fei accept Rongrong?" Xia Ying suddenly asked me. "I don't know, but A Fei's introverted personality is quite different from Zhang Yirong's outgoing nature." In fact, when Zhang Yirong first expressed her feelings for A Fei in class, I thought A Fei would definitely not like someone like Zhang Yirong—not because she wasn't good enough, but because she wasn't A Fei's type.
As expected, after a while, A Fei walked over with an awkward expression. "Oh! You came out so soon; where's Rongrong?" Xia Ying quickly went up to ask when she saw A Fei. "Wait a minute; why do I feel like I'm watching two high school students go on a blind date? At their age... isn't it a bit early?" I chimed in teasingly. A Fei remained silent, standing there with his head down like a wooden puppet. After a while, Zhang Yirong came out; I noticed her eyes were slightly red and swollen—clearly signs of having cried. Xia Ying understood immediately and shot A Fei a glare before walking over to hug Zhang Yirong. "Yu Chengfei, you're not human! How could you hurt Rongrong's heart? Mei Jiao, let's go!" Xia Ying angrily pulled Gu Mei Jiao and turned to leave with Zhang Yirong. I was stunned by everything happening before my eyes and turned to look at A Fei, who let out a sigh of relief and said, "Let's go; everything's settled now. Do you still feel like playing?" Pang Hao and I exchanged glances and replied in unison, "Not anymore."
After returning home, A Fei wanted to go to sleep. I said to him, "Come on, do you dare to play two games of NBA online?" Upon hearing that basketball games were involved along with my provocative tone, he retorted defiantly, "Bring it on! Who's afraid of whom! Wait until I get home and turn on my computer to crush you!" With that, he went home. I opened my computer and found the hidden NBAK folder filled with many files. Once inside, I discovered that A Fei was already online waiting for me—he really was quick! He used the Boston Celtics while I used the Memphis Grizzlies.
Because this season (2010-2011) of the NBA playoffs had just seen the Memphis Grizzlies complete an upset against the top seed—A Fei almost always used the Celtics whenever he played NBAK. We were battling for the championship title when... well... in the end, A Fei won four consecutive games with an overall score of 4-0—truly embarrassing for me!
After losing in the finals, I logged off the game and opened QQ only to find Xue Er still offline; she had just changed her status message: "Love lost, heart dead, nothing left..." Seeing Xue Er like this made me really uncomfortable; however, aside from QQ, I had no other way to contact her for comfort, so all I could do was share in her sadness. Cookie was online too; Cookie had updated her status: "I'm so mad! What do you have that's so great!" Wow! I wonder who provoked Cookie this time; that person must have some guts to mess with her! "Are you there?" Huh? Ice Man sent me a message. I replied: "Yeah! Ice Man, have you eaten? What are you up to?" Ice Man responded: "Nothing much; I'm exhausted from playing matches; my bones feel like they're falling apart."
"You played matches too?! Where? What league is it?" My curiosity about Ice Man's identity grew stronger. "Nothing special; just playing around with some friends," Ice Man replied calmly. Phew! So that's how it is; he scared me for a moment—I thought Ice Man was actually a professional basketball player! After chatting with Ice Man for a bit, I went invisible on QQ and greeted Cookie: "Cookie, are you there? Who upset you?" Cookie gently replied: "Don't mind me! I'm feeling down!" I was completely shocked—why was Cookie so angry? After a while, Cookie sent another message: "Soda, I'm sorry; that was an automatic reply earlier; I'm not in a good mood today so I'm logging off now; bye." It turns out that although Cookie has quite an attitude, she's not one of those unreasonable girls—she seems somewhat similar in personality to someone...
The next morning on the way to school, I discussed a funny movie we watched last night with A Fei when suddenly he stopped moving altogether—this scene felt oddly familiar... Zhao Bin! Could it be that Zhao Bin was here? I slowly turned my gaze towards where A Fei was looking—oh no! It wasn't Zhao Bin after all; it was Situ Jianfei! Why would he come looking for A Fei? "Jianfei! Long time no see; how have you been lately?" I hurriedly approached him. Situ Jianfei didn't even glance at me as he walked straight up to A Fei. "Yu Chengfei! How could you promise me this? Is this how you protect Sha Xiaomei?" Situ Jianfei glared at A Fei angrily.
"Jianfei, I think you've misunderstood; Sha Xiaomei broke up with A Fei because she cheated," I explained alongside Situ Jianfei. "Shut up! All I've seen is Sha Xiaomei unhappy; if she's unhappy then something must be wrong! You promised me you'd make her happy forever!" Situ Jianfei became increasingly agitated and unreasonable as well. "Jianfei, did Sha Xiaomei tell you that we bullied her? I'd also want Sha Xiaomei to be happy—that's why I'm respecting her choice," A Fei said calmly but ominously.
"Sha Xiaomei has nothing now; I ran into her yesterday—I can sense she's unhappy or upset—no matter what caused it; her unhappiness is your responsibility!" Situ Jianfei shouted more intensely as he got worked up.
"Jianfei, why don't you ask Sha Xiaomei yourself? She's currently with rich second-generation Zhao Bin!" I also got agitated.
"Fine! Yu Chengfei! Just wait—you better hope it's not your fault if something happens to Sha Xiaomei because if it is—I won't let you off easily—you know my temper!" With that warning hanging in the air, Situ Jianfei turned around and left while A Fei acted as if nothing had happened as he pushed his bike away without looking back at me shouting: “Hurry up! We’ll be late for training!”
Upon arriving at the gymnasium and stepping inside, we saw everyone training hard under Hot Fire’s guidance. Teacher Qiu spotted us coming in and exclaimed: “Why are you two so late? You’re already half an hour behind schedule—the Shinan High School team will be here soon—quick change your clothes and get into training.” It’s all Situ Jianfei’s fault for making us get scolded!
Just as we finished changing our clothes, the gym doors slowly opened—the Shinan High School team had arrived! I noticed that all of Shinan High School’s team members were particularly thin—the thinner they were the better—like monkeys—which would give us an advantage during matchups!
The game began and sure enough—the opposing team’s “monkey brothers” were indeed at a disadvantage during confrontations—once during defense against Zhang Ruizhi’s layup—the opponent’s center got knocked back over two meters and flew right out of bounds—the whistle blew signaling a defensive foul against them—with just one quarter gone—they had already been blocked five times—I even managed one block myself—it felt amazing!
At the end of the first quarter—we led by nearly twenty points at 91-71—the game seemed almost decided already—but we didn’t forget our lesson from City East vs City One High School—we remained vigilant.
In the second quarter—Teacher Qiu sent me along with Ji Fang, A Fei, Zhang Jun and Li Junhai’s “Mini Legion” onto the court—as soon as we entered—I received a pass from A Fei and hit a three-pointer—and during this quarter alone—I scored four three-pointers setting a new record for myself while A Fei dished out three assists along with two steals—it seemed Shinan High School came here just to help us rack up stats—in halftime we led by twenty-six points at 66-40.
“In the third quarter Ouyang Zhou Litong and Zhang Yingjie will take over—the opposing team seems to have shown all their strength,” Teacher Qiu stated—we needed this win for our third consecutive victory which would secure our spot in playoffs—Teacher Qiu mentioned that our goal this season for Yulin School Team was maintaining eighth place while striving for fourth—we’ve been tirelessly working towards achieving and surpassing this goal without rest...
In the third quarter Ouyang and Zhang Yingjie played exceptionally well—but starting from midway through this quarter—the opposing team gradually regained their shooting touch—the entire third quarter they shot 1-for-8 from three-point range—but due to our overwhelming strength and lead—the point difference remained around twenty points until they finally hit their last three-pointer signaling the end of third quarter.
We all knew that once we entered garbage time starting from third quarter—the opposing team realized winning was hopeless—so throughout fourth quarter their defense became very lax—in the end we crushed Shinan High School at home 118-88—a step away from maintaining our undefeated streak in City High League group matches.
We celebrated with high-fives and hugs—Zhongqi Senior and Bing Ge barely played this match so they got plenty of rest time—we all played relatively relaxed since it was Sunday—after leaving gymnasium it felt particularly quiet—I stretched lazily—it felt good finally heading home—but alas! It’s really unfair—everyone else whether working or studying gets weekends off while we still have two matches back-to-back.
After leaving school it was already past eleven o'clock noon—I asked A Fei: “Are you hungry? Shall we go eat Grandpa Ken?” A Fei looked at me: “Let’s skip it; I prefer home-cooked meals—these outside foods can’t compare.” This guy really knows how to kill the mood—but fine if he doesn’t want to eat—we hopped on our bikes and sped away.
"Yu Chengfei! Xiang Jie! Stop right there!" Someone at the alley entrance gestured for us to halt. As we got closer, I gradually recognized him... it was Zhao Bin! He was accompanied by a few big guys, all seemingly upperclassmen, tall and strong-looking. It seemed they had come to seek revenge against us! A Fei and I pedaled our bikes toward them. The crowd instinctively parted as we charged through. A Fei and I were pedaling like mad; it felt like a scene from an action movie. After we rode quite a distance, we realized they had long since disappeared from sight. What a false alarm! I was exhausted and gasping for breath as I said to A Fei, "Luckily we rode fast this time; who knows if we'll be so lucky next time." A Fei replied, also out of breath, "Let's just hope we don't run into them again." Zhao Bin really held a grudge too well. When I got home, my parents were sitting on the sofa watching TV. Upon seeing me return, they quickly stood up and said, "Son, you must be hungry. We were just waiting for you to eat. Go wash your hands quickly."
