In the spring of 1964, the sound of a baby's loud cries echoed through the delivery room of a workers' hospital in a cotton mill in Sichuan. Wang Mingyan smiled, the wrinkles at the corners of his eyes relaxing with joy.
"It's a son! Another son!" he announced to the friends and relatives who had come to congratulate him. With two daughters and now another son, Wang Mingyan's family was indeed blessed with "two dragons and two phoenixes," making them the envy of others. This little boy was named Wang Yong, symbolizing bravery and strength.
"This child is fortunate! The Wang family is now a model family in the factory, with two parents in leadership positions and siblings who dote on him. He will surely have a bright future!" the neighbors remarked.
Wang Yong was indeed a lovable child. With a round face and big eyes, he smiled like a little sun. As the youngest in the family, he naturally became the apple of everyone's eye. His father, Wang Mingyan, was busy with work but would always bring home treats when he could; his mother, Zhang Lan, reserved the best for her youngest son; and his older siblings doted on him as well.
"We were poor when we were young and didn't have such good conditions. Now I want my children to have a better life than we did!" In an era of relative scarcity, Wang Yong had no worries about food or clothing and enjoyed everything that his peers envied.
The family showered Wang Yong with love and indulgence. At seven years old, he was called to school because he had taken a classmate's pencil. Instead of scolding her son, Zhang Lan reprimanded the "tattling" classmate in front of the teacher: "My child likes your pencil; what's wrong with letting him play with it? You shouldn't be so stingy; you need to learn to share!"
The teacher was taken aback, while Wang Yong beamed with pride. Such scenes repeated themselves throughout Wang Yong's upbringing. At ten, when he tore up his exam paper after failing, Wang Mingyan casually told the teacher that it didn't matter whether his son studied or not since they were well-off. At twelve, when he bullied classmates and hit someone, Zhang Lan defended her son by questioning why her son would pick on that particular classmate when no one else did.
"Then it must be your fault that my son acted out," Zhang Lan said, hands on her hips, scolding the teachers and classmates present.
At fifteen, he started skipping classes and getting into fights. Each time, Wang Mingyan and Zhang Lan chose to cover for him, protect him, and even bribe the teachers, allowing the issues to fade away. "He's still a child, he doesn't understand. He'll be fine when he grows up," they always said.
Meanwhile, Wang Mingyan and Zhang Lan became increasingly busy with work. As key members of their organization, they often worked overtime, leaving Wang Yong in the care of his elderly grandparents. The old couple spoiled their grandson, indulging his every whim.
The year Wang Yong graduated from middle school, he couldn't get into high school, but Wang Mingyan managed to pull some strings to get him into the city's top school. However, just three months after enrollment, he was expelled for fighting.
Zhang Lan was relentless, even kneeling at the principal's office door, declaring that unless her son was given another chance, she would remain there forever. Eventually, the school had no choice but to agree to let Wang Yong return.
"Your father and I are both officials; we've embarrassed ourselves for you!"
"Even if Mom begs you, you can't keep acting like this," Zhang Lan pleaded with red eyes as she pulled at Wang Yong.
Wang Yong kept his head down, muttering, "I know, I know. You kneeling at the door is so humiliating."
"How am I supposed to face anyone at school now?"
After countless pleas and promises of rewards from both parents, Wang Yong finally agreed to go back to school.
