After calming my thoughts, I picked up the fourth document and began to review Yu Xin's information and the files related to this case.
Yu Xin's testimony from last year didn't hold much value, but there were two noteworthy points:
First, in Yu Xin's statement, she did not mention that she and Mei Tiantian had started the exam when they noticed Wang Keyi had fallen behind. This means that the exact time when they realized Wang Keyi was missing remains unclear and requires further investigation.
Second, regarding the time of reporting to the police, Yu Xin stated that they went to report immediately after finishing the exam. However, in Mei Tiantian's testimony, although it wasn't very clear, it could be inferred that they discussed it for some time before deciding to report.
I made a note on the document.
During dinner, I couldn't shake off those questions and felt inexplicably depressed. I hardly spoke throughout the meal, while Hua Yin and my mom chatted about dreams and gossip, making it seem as if Hua Yin was my mom's son instead.
"Have you finished?" Hua Yin asked, standing beside me with a chicken leg my mom had "specially" saved for him.
"Not yet! There’s so much to go through! I’ve only finished last year’s," I replied irritably.
"Oh, then keep going. You'll definitely make a significant discovery once you're done," Hua Yin said with a smile as he retreated, and I could hear him munching on fruit outside.
I played some music to lighten my mood and continued sifting through the pile of documents. The first thing I looked at was Yu Xin's Forensic Report. The content was quite similar to Wang Keyi's. Yu Xin also died from drowning, but one particular statement caught my attention:
The deceased died from drowning; large amounts of algae and local river water were found in her nasal cavity and lungs. The left nipple of the corpse was severed by a sharp object, showing signs of sexual assault, but no male semen was found in her body. There were traces indicating that her wrists, thighs, and ankles had been bound before death. It is currently impossible to determine if there are signs of body relocation.
This significantly changed my perspective on the incident. Another point worth noting was that there were signs of binding on Yu Xin before her death. This wasn't surprising; rather, it further confirmed my previous suspicions.
As I was about to organize the materials I had just reviewed, I realized I had overlooked a document. It was brief, detailing that Hua Yishu had sought out two individuals: one was Mei Tiantian, and the other was Wang Qi, who is Yu Xin's boyfriend.
The result was that both had alibis. Upon seeing this information, I could largely confirm my suspicions, as they aligned with what Hua Yishu and the others had thought.
"How's it going? Have you finished?" Hua Yin walked in again after finishing her fruit, bringing me a leftover platter.
"I’m done." I popped a grape into my mouth, nearly wincing from the sourness.
"What do you think?"
"It’s not the same killer," I replied. "While I can’t be certain, that’s my impression."
"Explain your reasoning."
"I think if it were the same killer, they would choose similar or identical time frames, locations, and methods. This would define them as a psychologically disturbed serial offender. So—"
I grabbed another grape, which turned out to be sour as well. "So if it were the same killer, they would likely follow their previous modus operandi and strive for consistency. However, a careful comparison of the two autopsy reports reveals two significant differences: first, Wang Keyi’s nipple was bitten off, while Yu Xin’s was cut off with a sharp object; second, there was semen found in Wang Keyi’s body, but none in Yu Xin’s.
"From previous records, we know that last year’s perpetrator used a Knife Set. The fact that Wang Keyi’s nipple was bitten off rather than cut indicates that the killer preferred to do it that way—not due to a lack of tools but rather for psychological gratification. This suggests that leaving semen inside the body without fear of detection by the police highlights just how disturbed this killer's psyche is. I don’t believe such a perverse mindset would change between crimes; since their semen sample has already been exposed, there would be even less reason to hide it during another offense.
"So I deduce that the killers in these two cases are not the same person, and…"
