After returning to school, it was just the end of class. We quietly walked back to our classroom. Xia Ying and Shuai Dong, along with Pang Hao, rushed over when they saw me and A Fei walk in. "Welcome back, Gemini Stars..." Shuai Dong started to say with a smile but abruptly stopped when he noticed our expressions. "Jie, A Fei, stop messing around. You tricked us last time after winning, and this time we definitely won't fall for it again, heh heh. Huh? Why are your eyes swollen?" Pang Hao noticed something was off with me and A Fei. Xia Ying tugged at Pang Hao's sleeve, signaling him to stop. A Fei and I remained silent as we walked back to our seats with blank expressions. Zhang Yirong hurried over to A Fei, while Xia Ying followed me back and patted my shoulder. "Big romantic, don't be too sad." My mind felt chaotic, as if the match hadn't ended yet. I turned to her and said softly, "Xia Ying, we were so close, really just a little bit away. When we faced Sangyue, we encountered a tough fourth quarter, but we pulled through in the end. We had even defeated Twenty-Four Middle School before; I can't accept losing in the last twenty seconds..." My heart was filled with self-reproach. Xia Ying smiled and said, "Well... if Twenty-Four Middle School gets eliminated, what do you think they'll feel? Besides, you guys eliminated the disorganized championship favorites Sangyue High School; who feels more regret than you?" I was instantly left speechless by Xia Ying's two questions.
"Jie, losing this time means you have to work harder to win next time instead of wallowing in self-pity. We're all supporting you!" Xia Ying's words felt like a wake-up call. "Xia Ying, we will definitely win next time!" I exclaimed at her. "That's the spirit," Xia Ying said with a sweet smile on her lips. She looked truly beautiful when she smiled. Xia Ying, there’s something I must tell you loudly: Xia Ying, I like you!
After school in the afternoon, A Fei and I pushed our bikes out of the school when Sha Xiaomei ran over. "A Fei!" she called out. "Sha Xiaomei, what's up?" A Fei replied as she approached her. "I was worried about you! You looked so down after class that I was afraid something might happen to you after school," Sha Xiaomei said concernedly to A Fei. "Silly girl, how could that be?" Sha Xiaomei's words made A Fei laugh despite her earlier heavy mood. Ah! These two are showing off their affection again; it's really unbearable. It seems like their relationship is never-ending. I signaled to A Fei that I would leave first; she nodded and reminded me to be careful on the way home.
When I got home, my mom was cooking dinner. "You're back! How did the match go? Are you tired?" she asked with concern as soon as I walked in. "Exhausted! We made it to the semifinals but lost," I replied casually as I headed to my room. "Oh! Son, what's going on? Why do you look so down?" My dad came out of the bathroom and asked me. "Dad, our team lost; we can't go to the Olympic Sports Center," I told him. "It's okay; if you can't go, then you can't go! Honestly, playing there isn't anything special; it's just a bigger venue; the courts are still the same size!" Dad comforted me. I forced a smile at him before heading into my room.
I lay on my bed with my eyes closed; the matches from earlier kept replaying in my mind—Bing Ge's slam dunk, Song Huajing's brilliant pass, Lu Lei's fast break, Zhongqi Senior's three-pointer... sigh! It felt like I was going crazy; my whole body ached from playing so hard today that soon my consciousness began to blur... "Xiang Jie," I heard someone calling me. Slowly opening my eyes revealed none other than Allen Iverson! "Uncle AI Iverson! How do you speak Chinese?" I jumped up from my bed excitedly. AI Iverson smiled and said, "How about we play a game?" "Sure!" I exclaimed joyfully; playing basketball with my idol was simply amazing! Suddenly my room transformed into a huge basketball court as I walked to the center but when I turned around again, AI Iverson had disappeared. "Uncle AI Iverson!" I called out anxiously...
"Jie! Dinner's ready!" The shout startled me awake; I opened my eyes wide—my room was still just my room with no AI Iverson or basketball court around; clearly, it had all been a dream again. That evening I logged onto QQ and saw Cookie online; I greeted her: "Cookie, it seems I'm never going to get that kiss from you." Cookie replied: "No worries; this promise is always valid! Whenever you make it to finals in the future, I'll fulfill this promise!" Her seemingly casual words warmed my heart deeply. With less than a month until final exams and soon becoming a sophomore in high school myself, this journey in the City High League had come to an early end for me; I'd better get back to reviewing my studies.
In the following half month or so, I immersed myself in intense study sessions while A Fei and Sha Xiaomei also cut down on their flirting time and focused entirely on preparing for their upcoming exams. Meanwhile, the NBA Finals concluded surprisingly: Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavericks to defeat the 'Big Three' of Miami Heat for the championship title while Nowitzki earned MVP honors. Additionally, our school temporarily halted sports training classes so that Team members could focus on their studies for exams. As for the three seniors on Team... Zhang Ruizhi seemed to recover fastest; given his height advantage and performance in this year's City High League, he would likely be prioritized by college basketball teams even if he got into university. Zhang Yingjie worked hard on his studies after overcoming his earlier frustrations; it seemed he no longer wanted basketball as a career but aimed for college instead to become an office worker. Ji Fang appeared somewhat downcast as he still couldn't move past losing to Twenty-Four Middle School but with college entrance exams approaching he managed to keep himself occupied enough not to dwell too much on it.
However, what surprised me most was Zhongqi Senior—he actually applied to Teacher Qiu to leave Team! He didn't deserve to be a leader and spoke very firmly at that moment but after our earnest persuasion he finally changed his mind about leaving us behind. Anyway, everything at school returned to its previous calmness before City High League began.
