Fantasy Team initiated the play, and Freeman, the short Point Guard, came over to defend. Guard wrapped the ball around his waist before passing it to the forward on the right wing. The forward received the ball and shot, but it hit the rim. After Freedom Team Center grabbed the rebound, he controlled the ball to waste time. Center and the forward rushed in to double-team, but unexpectedly, Guard dashed in to block Center's passing lane, intercepting the ball. Guard sprinted towards the corner and made a three-pointer! 65, Fan Team took a one-point lead. With only seven seconds left in the game, after the inbound pass, the short Point Guard charged straight to the basket. Guard stood in front, but the short Point Guard bent down at a ninety-degree angle and slipped through Guard's armpit to score, regaining the lead. Only two seconds remained, and Fan Team was already on the edge of a cliff.
Fan Team inbounded, and Point Guard passed to Center at the corner. As soon as Center caught the ball, he shot just as the referee blew the final whistle. The ball arced beautifully through the air and swished through the net—an incredible buzzer-beater! The final score was 76. Fantasi pulled off a stunning victory with a “Dreamlike Last Shot” against Freeman, and I began to admire this team’s “Fantasy Journey.”
After the game, players from both Fantasi and Freedom Team left the court. “Fantasy Team, please wait.” Jiang Lingfeng called out to them. “What do you want?” The Center turned around and shot us a sharp glance that sent chills down my spine. “Hello, we are members of the Dream Chasers Team…” I thought Jiang Lingfeng might regret greeting them at this moment. “Oh, you’re our opponents in the finals, right? What do you want? Looking for a fight?” The forward scoffed dismissively.
“Hey! What kind of attitude is that? Talking to you is giving you face! Don’t act all high and mighty; what if we provoke you…” My anger flared up instantly; who could blame me for being young and impulsive? The forward’s arrogant demeanor was infuriating.
“Damn! Want to fight? Bring it on; I’m not afraid!” The forward was equally defiant. “Jie, don’t get worked up.” A Fei and Jiang Lingfeng pulled me back behind them. “We’re not here to provoke you; we just want to get to know you,” Jiang Lingfeng said politely while suppressing his irritation. “Is there a need for that? The strong are lonely; there can only be one champion. We don’t need friends because we will defeat you in future matches.” The Point Guard sneered coldly. At that moment, my admiration for Fan Team vanished entirely.
“Are you guys not happy about winning today’s game?” A Fei asked in confusion. The Center from Fantasi glanced at him disdainfully and replied, “Today’s victory was expected. Even if we win city championships, so what? Our goal is the National Championship! ” Such arrogance! If it weren’t for your lucky last-minute three-pointer, you would have been eliminated by Freeman. How dare you act so cocky!
“Since you’re not interested in talking, we won’t say more. See you on the court later,” said Jiang Lingfeng. We turned to leave, and his words “See you on the court later” carried weight.
“A bunch of kids thinking they can compete for championships; go home and drink milk,” I heard them mutter behind us. My whole body trembled with anger; I couldn’t hold back anymore. “Bastards! What are you saying? If you have guts, say it to our faces instead of talking behind our backs!” I wanted to jump over there.
“Jie! Don’t be impulsive.” A Fei and Jiang Lingfeng quickly held me back. A Fei whispered in my ear: “Jie, acting out now won’t help us at all. If the referees see us fighting, they might disqualify us from the match—exactly what Fantasy Team wants! Just hold on for a bit longer; remember our goal is to defeat them on the court.”
But I was too blinded by rage to listen to A Fei. In the end, it was still A Fei and Jiang Lingfeng who dragged me away while I heard mocking laughter from behind us; I felt like I could kill them at that moment. Once we exited through the park gates, they let me go. “Why did you pull me back?” I shouted at them.
“Jie! Don’t act like that; even if we fought them, what would change? It doesn’t matter if we win or lose; don’t you want to play in the finals? Isn’t our goal in this tournament to win a championship trophy?” After hearing this from Jiang Lingfeng, I calmed down a bit.
“A Fei, come here,” he said as he placed a hand on my shoulder: “After this match, they won’t be laughing anymore; we’ll send them packing.” I thought for a moment: “Yeah! Let them know how strong we are!”
As we prepared to disperse, Jiang Lingfeng walked off into the distance. I called out to his back: “Goodbye, Ice Man!” Suddenly he stopped and slowly turned around. I expected a look of shock but instead saw a broad smile on his face; even A Fei looked calm.
“How did you know?” asked Jiang Lingfeng, smiling.
“Because I'm not an idiot!” I stuck my tongue out at him.
“I was worried about how to talk with you guys; didn’t expect you already guessed it right—yes, I am Ice Man.” He replied calmly while jokingly saying it was easy for him to guess with my detective skills.
On our way back, I asked why A Fei wasn’t surprised either. He smiled and simply said: “You’re clever; I’m not an idiot either.”
