We then arrived at Kuda Square, where there were many spectators, most of whom supported the home team, Beijing P. Some even held up signs with the P Team logo and the words "Beijing Men Will Win!" It seemed that the fans in Beijing were very passionate. "Now let's welcome both championship teams to the opening match!" the Emcee suddenly shouted. The team entered first, wearing beautifully designed uniforms, with their team number written in the lower right corner. The team's height was fairly balanced, probably just over 1.8 meters tall, similar to us. Their jersey numbers were 11 and 9. I noticed that the player wearing number 9 was talking to his two teammates, so he must be the captain.
The Snow Wolf Team then stepped onto the court. Compared to Beijing P, the Snow Wolf Team had a slightly taller average height, with their tallest player around 1.9 meters. The shortest player was about as tall as A Fei. The three players had traditional jersey numbers: 1 (Point Guard), a Forward, and a Center. With the referee's whistle signaling the start of the match, the Streetball Championship North China Division finals officially began. After a coin toss, Snow Wolf Team gained possession. The number 1 player organized the offense after receiving the ball, while number 23 from the opposing team came over to defend. I noticed a pattern in street basketball tournaments: usually, the Point Guard serves as the captain, perhaps because Point Guards tend to have a certain leadership quality.
Snow Wolf's number 1 player attempted to break through number 23 but failed and had to pass back to the Forward. The Forward took three steps from the right wing toward the basket and jumped high with both hands raised to block him. Suddenly, Snow Wolf's number 2 player threw the ball from behind his back to his left hand mid-air—what a beautiful play! The ball bounced twice on the rim before swishing through the net. I couldn't help but applaud for Snow Wolf Team, but I accidentally caught the attention of both sides' Beijing fans watching me. Embarrassed, I lowered my hands; continuing to clap would likely provoke public outrage.
P Team made a long pass beyond the three-point line for their inbound play. After receiving the ball, the Forward passed it directly to the Center. The Center charged toward the basket under pressure from Snow Wolf Team's tall Center and executed an impressive dunk over him despite being just over 1.8 meters tall against Snow Wolf's 1.9-meter Center! The jumping ability and hang-time were astonishing, eliciting loud cheers from the crowd—this was truly the strength of a division champion! For some reason, my heart suddenly sank like a deflated balloon: how could we high school kids compete against such skilled street basketball teams?
The game progressed intensely, with both teams displaying balanced skills and closely contested scores that kept alternating upward. Snow Wolf Team's Point Guard made a powerful drive forward while P Team's Point Guard blocked his path. Snow Wolf's Point Guard used a crossover dribble to get past him, but suddenly P Team's Point Guard turned and reached out to steal the ball from under his arm. After stealing it, he quickly rushed toward the three-point line; upon reaching it, Snow Wolf's Point Guard caught up along with a Forward for double coverage. P Team's Point Guard held the ball in his right hand and passed it behind him—clearly intending to pass left—but Snow Wolf's Point Guard quickly shifted left to defend. At that moment, something amazing happened: as P Team's right hand passed leftward, his left hand blocked it briefly before magically passing it to his right! This was AI Iverson's classic passing move! After catching the ball, the Forward took two steps inside the three-point line and scored—everyone went wild applauding! At that moment, I felt like P Team truly embodied AI; I saw Jiang Lingfeng and A Fei smiling and clapping too—North China's talent pool was indeed deep!
Just after enjoying P Team's performance, Snow Wolf Team quickly inbounded for a set play. The Point Guard used screens from both Forward and Center to drive into the paint for a layup attempt; just as he jumped up to shoot, P Team's Point Guard came flying in from behind for a block attempt. Snow Wolf's Point Guard seemed aware of him coming and executed a beautiful air bridge move to avoid him before releasing the ball; although it bounced off the rim and went out of bounds, it was clear that Snow Wolf's Point Guard had solid fundamentals. With three minutes remaining in the game, the score stood at 51-47 in favor of P Team.
At that moment, after inbounding, Snow Wolf Team suddenly accelerated their offensive pace: first their Center scored inside; then their Point Guard stole from P Team’s Point Guard and assisted their Forward for a mid-range jumper on the right wing that went in! This time on offense, P Team’s Point Guard missed a free throw attempt; however, Snow Wolf’s Center fought hard for an offensive rebound amidst traffic before passing out to their Point Guard beyond the arc who immediately shot—score! Within one minute, Snow Wolf executed an impressive 70-point offensive surge that tied up the score at 85 and successfully took back the lead! Their "Miraculous Sixty Seconds" counterattack was spectacular!
With two minutes remaining in regulation time after P Team inbounded without taking risks anymore, their Point Guard controlled at around free throw line position before suddenly accelerating past Snow Wolf’s Point Guard for an off-the-dribble jumper—score! The score returned to within one point at 78-77. I clenched my fists tightly on the sidelines as I watched this fierce showdown unfold; it felt just as intense as when we played ourselves—it was exhilarating! In those last one minute and forty seconds of playtime, both teams seemed anxious and made mistakes; following P’s missed layup that rolled out of bounds left only thirty seconds on clock remaining. After inbounding, Snow Wolf’s Point Guard passed to their Forward who jumped from right wing; however, P Team’s Forward leaped up ready for a block only for Snow Wolf’s Forward unexpectedly to throw behind his head just before shooting! Snow Wolf’s Point Guard caught it and dashed toward three-point line arc—shot made! With twelve seconds left on clock again expanded their lead; P Team grew anxious as their Center inbounded quickly passing long to their Forward but made an error instead throwing out of bounds causing sighs from all spectators present.
After inbounding again by Snow Wolf Team’s Center who charged straight into paint despite height disadvantage failed against Snow Wolf’s Center but successfully disrupted his accuracy—the ball hit backboard then rimmed out as referee blew whistle signaling end of game! Ultimately with another stunning “Miraculous Sixty Seconds” comeback by Snow Wolf Team they defeated P Team with a score of 87-80 securing victory in group stage opener!
