As we were cheering, I took out my phone and dialed home. It was my mom who answered. Once the call connected, I shouted into the microphone, "Mom! We did it! We won the championship for the North China Region!" I was so excited that I couldn't help but choke up. My mom on the other end was equally thrilled, "Really? My son is the champion of all North China?" "Yes, yes! Your son is the best in all of North China!"
After hanging up, I called Xia Ying: "Cookie, we won the championship!..." I wanted to share this news with everyone. Next was the award ceremony, where leaders from the Sports Bureau personally presented us with certificates and medals. When the staff brought out the North China Champion trophy, the three of us couldn't hold back our tears again. Captain Jiang Lingfeng raised the trophy high, and the audience pointed their arms to the sky as if Beijing was our home ground. We had won, but our mission was still not complete; we were coming for the National Finals!
We held the championship trophy as we exited Kuda Square and boarded the bus prepared by the organizers. Once inside, we placed the trophy on the bus aisle and gazed at it. The responsible uncle came over, excitedly saying to us, "Kids, you did great!" We smiled but didn't say anything. When the bus passed by a restaurant, I signaled for the driver to stop for a moment. Once it was parked, I quickly jumped out and ran toward the restaurant.
Upon entering, I rushed to where Ya was at the cash register. "Sir, what would you like to eat... Ah! You scared me! Jie, what are you doing here?" Ya slowly looked up and was startled to see me; she placed her hand on her chest. I suddenly grabbed her shoulders: "Ya, do you know what it means to be the champion of North China Region? It means we are the best team in all of North China; we're called Dream Chasers!" As I spoke, Ya initially didn't react but scratched her head with her right index finger. After three or four seconds, her eyes suddenly lit up in realization: "You guys won?!"
Hearing this made me smile and nod vigorously. "That's awesome! I didn't expect your strength to be this impressive!" Ya exclaimed in disbelief.
I grinned and said, "Hehe, I didn't think we could reach the top of North China either. We're celebrating at your place for lunch today; look how much I'm supporting your business! We came here to eat because of you; let the boss give you a raise." I teased her. "Alright! I'll reserve a private room for you." Ya stuck her tongue out at me. At that moment, everything seemed perfect; my heart felt so light.
After arriving at the hotel, we entered our room with the trophy and closed the door. The five of us sat on the floor in a circle around the trophy, all staring intently at it. The trophy was beautifully designed; it incorporated elements of street basketball into a traditional cup with two handles: on top was a crown, and embedded in the center was a basketball about five centimeters in diameter. Above it were the initials sb for National Streetball Championship, below it read North China, and on the base in the first row it said National Street Basketball Championship; in the second row it stated North China Region Champion; at the very bottom was written Season 011.
Shuai Dong stared at the trophy and shook his head in amazement: "Wow, it's so beautiful! It's way prettier than Cangzhou's championship trophy. If this is how nice a North China Champion trophy looks, just imagine how stunning a National Championship one must be..." A Fei turned his head and smiled while patting Shuai Dong's shoulder: "When we bring it back, you'll see." Hearing this made me feel invigorated as I chimed in: "Right! You two just wait to see the National Champion trophy."
"By the way, where did Song Huajing and Lu Lei go? They haven't followed us since we got on the bus," Jiang Lingfeng asked. "I don't know; let them go wherever they want. You guys have thirty thousand yuan in prize money now; should we splurge a bit?" Shuai Dong said with a mischievous grin.
"Yeah, definitely! Let me think about where we should feast..." I pretended to ponder while looking at Flower Board. Shuai Dong's eyes lit up as he quickly added: "Exactly! We need to think carefully; this is a championship celebration meal; we have to enjoy it properly..."
"Right! Let's go to that restaurant with Ya's private room!" I slapped my thigh excitedly. Shuai Dong nearly fell to the floor in disbelief: "Wait, are we really going to that restaurant now that we've achieved this status? Doesn't seem appropriate." I picked my nose with my pinky finger: "I've already made arrangements with Ya; what's wrong? Don't you want to see Ya?"
"No way! If we're going, then let's go." Shuai Dong lowered his head and glared at me while Pang Hao and a few others chuckled at our exchange.
We walked onto a main road where I couldn't help but dance a little tango step as we walked along. People even greeted us on our way; we had truly made a name for ourselves! Why wasn't anyone asking us for autographs? Hehe. When we arrived at that restaurant and Ya saw us, she led us to a private room.
"Classmates, what would you like to eat today?" Ya asked us. "Let's get a championship set meal; I'll order," Shuai Dong said as he grabbed the menu. Accidentally brushing against Ya's hand made her quickly retract it while avoiding eye contact. I noticed Shuai Dong's face looked quite pleased about it. After ordering our food, we started drinking again; Pang Hao, A Fei, and Jiang Lingfeng indicated they wouldn't drink today while Shuai Dong and I went head-to-head in drinking contests. This was my fourth time drinking; however, I had progressed from being able to drink one bottle of beer to two bottles now as we toasted each other until we became tipsy...
