Inside the dilapidated temple, the atmosphere was tense and charged.
The pendant on Xuan Yang's chest suddenly erupted with a dazzling light, shining like the rising sun, instantly dispelling the darkness that enveloped the temple. This sudden brilliance caused the shadow lurking in the dark to let out a painful howl, as if its body were being scorched by fierce flames, emitting wisps of blue smoke.
"Ugh—" The shadow's scream echoed through the temple, sending chills down one's spine.
The light came too abruptly, forcefully blocking the shadow's attack. Crimson's Dual Eyes flashed with surprise, quickly replaced by an even stronger greed. "So it truly is the power of the Shadow Puppet... Hahaha, it seems today I will reap great rewards!"
He gathered his dark powers once more, black mist swirling around him. This time, his attack was even more ferocious and ruthless, like a surging tide carrying the momentum to destroy everything as it swept toward Xuan Yang.
Xuan Yang's heart sank; he knew he could not withstand this blow head-on. He struggled to summon the recently awakened power of the Shadow Puppet within him. A black silhouette slowly emerged behind him, forming an impenetrable shield that stood before him.
The shadow collided violently with the dark force, producing a deafening roar that shook the entire temple. Dust fell in clouds as beams creaked ominously, as if they might collapse at any moment.
"Boom—"
Xuan Yang felt his body violently pushed back by a powerful force, crashing to the ground like a kite with its string cut. He felt his insides shift painfully, and a sweet taste filled his throat as he coughed up blood.
"Pfft—"
"Cough cough cough..." Xuan Yang coughed violently, pain wracking his body as beads of sweat formed on his forehead.
He struggled to rise but found himself immobilized, as if a great mountain were pressing down on him, making even moving his fingers an arduous task.
The shadow approached Xuan Yang step by step; its footsteps echoed clearly in the silent temple, each step feeling like a stomp on Xuan Yang's heart, suffocating him further. The shadow's eyes sparkled with mockery and amusement, a cruel smile curling at its lips as it savored its prey's final struggles like a cat playing with a mouse.
"Heh heh, did you think you could escape? Little one, you are too naive!" The shadow's voice was hoarse and deep, laced with an unsettling chill.
Xuan Yang watched helplessly as the shadow drew closer, feeling death’s grip tightening around him. Was his newly awakened power to be snatched away so soon? Was he truly destined to die here?
No! I cannot give up! I cannot die! There are still many things I must do! Xuan Yang gritted his teeth until his gums bled. He summoned every ounce of strength within him, striving to call forth the Shadow Puppet once more for one last desperate fight.
However, his body had already been completely suppressed by the dark power of the shadow, rendering him unable to move even a fraction. He could only watch helplessly as the shadow drew closer.
The shadow stood before Xuan Yang, looking down at him as if he were a dying insect. His eyes were filled with mockery and disdain. "Give up, little one. You can never be my match... In the face of absolute power, all resistance is futile."
Slowly, he extended his hand, his bony fingers resembling eagle claws as they grasped the pendant hanging from Xuan Yang's chest, attempting to seize it.
At that critical moment, the pendant suddenly erupted with an even more dazzling light. This radiance solidified into a sharp beam like a sword, piercing directly toward the shadow's eyes.
"Ah—" The shadow let out a piercing scream, covering his eyes and stumbling backward until he collided with a pillar of the ruined temple, producing a dull thud.
Seizing the opportunity, Xuan Yang broke free from the shadow's control. He executed a nimble flip and summoned all his inner strength to coalesce into a massive Shadow Puppet.
This Shadow Puppet was more solid and larger than before, resembling a towering giant that exuded an unsettling aura. It swung its enormous fists, accompanied by a howling wind, and struck fiercely at the shadow.
"Die!" Xuan Yang roared, his voice filled with rage and hatred.
The shadow was caught off guard and was hit squarely by the Shadow Puppet's punch. He let out a muffled grunt as his body flew away like a kite with its string cut, crashing heavily to the ground and creating a large crater.
"Boom!"
Xuan Yang did not give the shadow any chance to catch his breath. He once again controlled the Shadow Puppet to launch an even more ferocious assault.
The fists of the Shadow Puppet fell like rain, each blow carrying immense force that shook the ground and sent debris flying.
The shadow was utterly powerless to retaliate; his black robe was torn apart, revealing a pale and emaciated body covered in scars, bleeding profusely.
Fear filled his eyes as he realized he had never imagined Xuan Yang's power could be so formidable, that he would be defeated by an unknown young man.
"No, it can't be... How could you be this strong... This is impossible..." The shadow struggled to fend off the attacks of the Shadow Puppet while letting out unwilling howls.
Xuan Yang ignored the shadow's terror and continued to command the Shadow Puppet to deliver another relentless beating.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
"Ahhh!"
The Shadow lay on the ground, barely clinging to life, like a dead dog, continuously spitting blood and convulsing.
Xuan Yang looked at the fallen Shadow, filled with anger and hatred. This guy had caused the deaths of so many innocent villagers, and today he would finally pay the price!
He controlled the Shadow Puppet, raising his fist high, ready to deliver the final blow and end this demon's life once and for all.
At that moment, Qu Si Yang, who had been unconscious, suddenly woke up. Seeing Xuan Yang about to kill the Shadow, she summoned all her strength to shout, "Xuan Yang, stop!"
Hearing Qu Si Yang's voice, Xuan Yang halted abruptly. He turned to look at her, a flicker of hesitation and confusion in his eyes.
Qu Si Yang struggled to stand up, stumbling over to Xuan Yang's side. Her face was pale, her lips cracked, and her voice weak as she said, "Xuan Yang, don't kill him..."
Xuan Yang gazed at Qu Si Yang, filled with doubt. "Why? This guy has killed so many people; shouldn't he pay the price? Are you still feeling sympathy for him?"
Qu Si Yang shook her head and replied, "I know he deserves to die a thousand times over, but we can't kill him..."
"Why? Give me a reason!" Xuan Yang asked in confusion; he simply couldn't understand why Qu Si Yang wanted to stop him.
"Because... he holds many secrets..." Qu Si Yang looked at the Shadow lying on the ground, a complex expression flashing in her eyes. "If we kill him, these secrets will never be uncovered... We need to find out who the mastermind is and why he did this..."
Xuan Yang stared at Qu Si Yang, realizing she had a point. The Shadow indeed held many secrets; if they could unravel them, perhaps they could find the true culprit and avenge those who had died while preventing more from suffering.
He took a deep breath and slowly lowered the fist of the Shadow Puppet, his murderous intent gradually dissipating.
The Shadow looked at Xuan Yang with a glimmer of relief in his eyes. He knew he had been granted a reprieve; this woman had actually saved him.
"Heh, I didn't expect you would let me go..." The Shadow sneered coldly, a hint of malice flashing in his eyes. "But do you think this is over? You won't be so lucky every time..."
Suddenly, the shadow transformed into a cloud of black mist and eerily vanished into the dilapidated temple, leaving only a chilling breeze behind.
Xuan Yang gazed at the disappearing shadow, a hint of seriousness flashing in his eyes. He knew that the shadow would surely return, and the next battle would likely be even more challenging.
"Xuan Yang, are you alright?" Qu Si Yang asked with concern, noticing the paleness on Xuan Yang's face and the injuries on his body.
Xuan Yang shook his head and replied, "I'm fine..."
He looked at Qu Si Yang, his eyes filled with tenderness and affection. "Thank you, Si Yang... If it weren't for you, I might have made a grave mistake."
Qu Si Yang met Xuan Yang's gaze, her eyes also brimming with warmth. "Do we really need to say such things between us?"
Suddenly, a commotion erupted outside the temple, with voices and footsteps echoing.
"What’s going on?" Xuan Yang felt a chill in his heart and hurried to the temple door to look outside.
He saw a group of villagers approaching the temple, wielding hoes, wooden sticks, and various weapons. They looked fierce and unfriendly, as if they were looking for trouble.
Leading them was Village Chief Lu Zhiyuan. Upon seeing Xuan Yang, his expression changed instantly, filled with worry.
"Xuan Yang! Si Yang! Are you both alright?" Lu Zhiyuan's voice trembled slightly as he pointed at Xuan Yang and Qu Si Yang, exclaiming loudly, "You two are so reckless! If it weren't for your father telling me you were injured, I wouldn't have known what was happening!"
