After a loud bang, a thick plume of smoke rose in the distance, and flames lit up half the sky.
Xuan Yang's heart tightened, sensing something was wrong. A chill ran from his feet to the top of his head. Damn it, what is this? Is something else going to go wrong?
He hurriedly ran toward the source of the noise, with Qu Si Yang following closely behind, shouting, "Xuan Yang, wait for me! Wait for me!" Her voice sounded like a cat whose tail had been stepped on.
When they reached the village entrance, Xuan Yang was stunned by the sight before him. Holy crap! This... this is too terrible!
The large tree at the village entrance, thick enough for several people to hug, had been snapped in half. Wood chips flew everywhere at the break, and the trunk was charred and still emitting wisps of smoke. Several villagers lay scattered on the ground, groaning in pain, blood staining the earth and filling the air with a strong metallic scent. Xuan Yang felt his stomach churn violently, nearly throwing up.
Not far away stood a man dressed in black with a pale face, holding a black dagger that glimmered ominously. His eyes were filled with murderous intent, resembling a beast ready to pounce on its prey. This man looked like a demon risen from hell, sending chills down one’s spine.
"Shadow!" Lu Zhiyuan's voice came from behind, filled with anger like an enraged lion. "You bastard! How dare you come to our village and wreak havoc!"
Shadow was the leader of the dark forces that everyone in the village feared. He wielded powerful shadow abilities and had always been a threat to the village, hanging over them like a sword ready to fall at any moment and take their lives.
"Lu Zhiyuan, long time no see." Shadow sneered, his eyes full of disdain as if he didn't consider Lu Zhiyuan worth his attention at all. "It seems you’re still the same as ever—no progress at all. You're still so weak; it’s truly disappointing."
"What do you want?" Lu Zhiyuan shouted, veins bulging on his forehead as he clenched his fists tightly.
"What do I want?" Shadow laughed coldly, his tone dripping with mockery and cruelty. "I want to destroy this village and turn it into my territory, making all of you my slaves! Hahaha!" His arrogant laughter echoed through the silent night sky, sounding particularly jarring.
"You wish!" Lu Zhiyuan roared, and a vibrant green vine appeared out of nowhere in his hand. The vine shimmered with glowing spots like a serpent slithering toward Shadow.
Shadow's figure flickered; he moved with astonishing speed like a bolt of black lightning, easily dodging the attack from the vine. The vine struck the ground with a loud thud, kicking up a cloud of dust.
"With you? You think you can stop me?" Shadow scoffed, his tone filled with contempt. "You're too naive!"
"Xuan Yang, protect Qu Si Yang," Lu Zhiyuan said gravely as he turned to Xuan Yang, worry evident in his voice.
"I got it, Village Chief," Xuan Yang nodded, positioning Qu Si Yang behind him. He could feel her body trembling slightly from fear at the horrifying scene before them. He gently patted her shoulder and reassured her, "Don't be afraid; I'm here."
Lu Zhiyuan took a deep breath and swung the vine again like green whips slicing through the air with a whistling sound as they attacked Shadow once more. This time, his strikes were sharper and faster, packing even more power.
The Shadow let out a cold laugh, brandishing a dagger that clashed against the vines, producing a series of metallic sounds and sparks flying in all directions.
Xuan Yang watched the battle unfold before him, anxiety filling his heart. He knew that Lu Zhiyuan was strong, but the Shadow was no weakling either. The outcome of this fight was uncertain, and he had to find a way to help Lu Zhiyuan; otherwise, the consequences would be dire.
Suddenly, he recalled the ability he had gained in the Shadow Realm: the power to manipulate shadows. A bold idea surfaced in his mind. He could control these shadows to attack the Shadow.
Taking a deep breath, he focused his mind and felt the shadows around him. He discovered that many shadows lurked near the Shadow, like ghosts hiding in the darkness.
He inhaled deeply again, merging his consciousness with the shadows. He felt himself transform into a shadow, becoming an intangible presence that could freely traverse through the darkness.
He commanded the shadows as if leading an army, directing them toward the Shadow.
The Shadow sensed an attack from behind and quickly turned to defend himself. However, he did not expect that it was the shadows themselves that were attacking him. The shadows surged toward him like a tidal wave, surrounding him completely and leaving him no escape.
A shock ran through the Shadow's heart as he frantically swung his dagger, trying to disperse the shadows. But they clung to him like leeches, wrapping around him tightly and rendering him immobile.
"What is this?" the Shadow shouted in terror, his voice filled with fear and despair.
"This is my power," Xuan Yang's voice echoed from within the shadows, sounding like a judgment from hell.
The Shadow's fear deepened; he never imagined that this so-called useless boy possessed such formidable strength.
He struggled to break free from the grasp of the shadows but found it utterly futile. The shadows tightened their hold on him like giant pythons, constricting him until he could barely breathe.
"Let me go!" the Shadow cried out in desperation, his voice hoarse like a trapped beast's lament.
"Not a chance," Xuan Yang replied coldly, his tone devoid of any pity.
The shadows gradually constricted further, enveloping the Shadow's body like a black cocoon.
With a piercing scream of anguish, the Shadow's form began to dissipate, ultimately transforming into a wisp of black smoke that vanished into thin air.
"Shadow!" Lu Zhiyuan exclaimed, unable to believe his eyes. He never expected that Xuan Yang could defeat the Shadow so easily.
He looked at Xuan Yang, his gaze filled with surprise and relief.
"Xuan Yang, you..."
Xuan Yang stepped out from the shadows, his face pale, clearly having expended a great deal of energy.
"Village Chief, I'm fine," he said, his tone calm, though his heart was brimming with excitement and pride.
Lu Zhiyuan nodded, feeling a sense of comfort. He knew that Xuan Yang had grown. He would become the guardian of the village and the only one capable of resisting the forces of darkness.
At that moment, a commotion suddenly erupted in the distance, accompanied by shouts and cries.
Xuan Yang and Lu Zhiyuan turned to see a group of villagers rushing toward them, each one looking frantic, like ants on a hot pan.
"Village Chief, it's bad!" one villager shouted in panic, breathless. "Something has happened in the village!"
"What happened?" Lu Zhiyuan quickly asked, a sense of foreboding rising within him.
"The ability users in the village have split apart!"
