Today we will be playing against Wu Jieyun High School at our home court. We have been training in the gym since this morning. We have never faced Wu Jieyun High School before, so we are unsure of their strength. However, based on their record from last season in the City High League, where they lost all three group matches and were eliminated, it should not be too difficult for us to win against them. Teacher Qiu has arranged for Zhongqi Senior, me, Zhang Jun, and Bing Ge to start. We currently have plenty of players available both inside and outside.
Before long, Wu Jieyun High School arrived, led by a tall and slender player who seemed to be about 1.95 meters tall. Standing among his teammates, he looked like a crane among chickens. I wonder if this giant from Wu Jieyun will cause us some trouble? As the referee blew the whistle, our game began. I jumped for the tip-off against the opposing Point Guard and managed to tip the ball to Zhang Jun. After receiving the pass, Zhang Jun quickly passed it to Zhongqi Senior, who drove straight to the basket and scored with a quick layup. After the opposing team quickly inbounded the ball, their Point Guard brought it over half court to organize an attack. Suddenly, their Point Guard made a direct pass to the Shooting Guard running towards the free-throw line. I seized the opportunity to steal the ball and quickly passed it back to Zhongqi Senior. Zhongqi Senior sprinted down the court, faked out the defender chasing him, and easily scored while also drawing a defensive foul—+1! Zhongqi Senior calmly made the free throw, giving us a 5-0 lead.
After the opposing team inbounded again, their Point Guard cautiously brought the ball over half court and slowly moved to the left wing. The Giant Center came out for the ball, and the Point Guard made a direct pass to him. The giant drove straight to the basket for a dunk. Li Kanglin and Bing Ge jumped up to defend, but the Giant Center used his height and long arms to slam the ball into the hoop. However, he was knocked off balance by our twin towers; his lighter weight put him at a disadvantage in physical confrontations.
Li Kanglin quickly inbounded to Zhongqi Senior, who brought the ball over half court and passed it to me. I dashed towards the top of the arc and as an opposing forward approached me, I bounced a pass through his legs to Zhang Jun. Zhang Jun then tossed it to Li Kanglin, who leaped high to complete an alley-oop dunk.
Wu Jieyun's strength is slightly better than Shinan High School's but does not pose much of a threat to us. By halftime, we led Wu Jieyun 50-40. Once we entered the locker room, Teacher Qiu high-fived each of us and praised our teamwork. We played quite well together; it seems we have a great chance of advancing as group leaders.
At the start of the second half, Teacher Qiu substituted all five starters with Ouyang, A Fei, Tu Lei, Qiu Junze, and Wei Weiwei. They lived up to expectations by continuing our momentum, especially A Fei and Tu Lei, who scored all 9 points for our team in the third quarter (A Fei 1 point, Tu Lei 10 points). We ultimately secured a decisive victory over Wu Jieyun with a score of 98-85 while also handing them their second consecutive loss.
Back in class afterward, we were all in high spirits. "Remember your home is the only castle; run with me along with the fragrance of rice..." I hummed as I walked in. "Did you win again?!" Shuai Dong leaned over and asked. "Of course! We are undoubtedly the strongest team in the universe; winning is a must!" I replied proudly. "Oh ho ho! You’re getting cocky now that you’ve won again? Don’t forget there’s still one more team left to play!"
"Do you know who our last opponent Thirteen Middle School is? They are rookies in City High League; it's their first time reaching the top sixteen in five years! Don't forget that Yulin High School has not missed out on reaching at least the top eight for nearly twenty years! What do you know?" I said dismissively. Shuai Dong rolled his eyes at me and stuck out his tongue before heading back to his seat.
I sat down and noticed Xia Ying sitting still without moving. She was writing her homework without looking up: "What’s up? Why do you keep staring at me?!" "I think you're beautiful, Miss Xia," I teased her playfully. "Really?" Xia Ying scoffed without lifting her head: "Am I prettier than Wang Yaqian?" I was taken aback; how did Xia Ying know about her? For a moment I was at a loss for words as Xia Ying slowly turned her head with an odd smile: "What’s wrong? Did my words hit home? I'm nowhere near as good as Wang Yaqian." There was a hint of jealousy in Xia Ying's words that left me frozen in place; I really couldn't figure out who was involved with Xia Ying... It must be him!
I suddenly turned my head and shouted at Shuai Dong: "Shi Zhidong! Get out here!" I stepped out of the classroom first while Shuai Dong seemed to guess what was happening and followed me obediently outside. I pulled him into a corner downstairs. "Dong Ge, what did I ever do wrong to you? Why do you have to ruin my life? Why?!" I said helplessly. Shuai Dong avoided my gaze and pushed me away: "Hey! It's Xia Ying who keeps asking me; I didn’t mean to let anything slip! That quirky girl just got it out of me..." Shuai Dong lowered his head as he spoke; seeing him like this made it hard for me to question him further.
"Alright then, Dong Ge; just be good from now on and don’t let anything happen that could harm me, okay?" I patted his shoulder as I spoke. Shuai Dong quickly made a 'k' gesture with his hand: "KK! It won't happen again." When we returned, I rushed over next to Xia Ying: "That guy Shuai Dong is always messing around; don’t listen to him anymore! Wang Yaqian is just my friend; since coming back from Beijing I've barely spoken with her—really! I didn’t even give her my phone number."
"Oh wow! So you call her 'Yaya' quite affectionately," Xia Ying teased playfully. "You can’t be serious! You still call me 'Jie' while I don’t call you Yingying; don’t take it too seriously!" As I said this, I gently tapped her head with my finger.
