We will continue to hold our home court to face the last opponent of the group stage: the "Rookie Team" from Thirteen Middle School. This team has been struggling since being eliminated from Group 007, failing to advance past the preliminary rounds in the last four seasons, until this year when they finally returned to the top sixteen. Teacher Qiu seems to have brought in a big-name coach along with two super rookies, but I really don't know who that mysterious coach is. While we were warming up, the mysterious Thirteen Middle School arrived late. When Teacher Qiu saw their coach, he suddenly looked stunned, which puzzled me because Teacher Qiu, who is usually calm and composed, showed such an expression. "Coach, what's wrong? Do you know the coach of Thirteen Middle School?" I asked him in confusion. Zhongqi Senior and A Fei were also curious and gathered around. Teacher Qiu sighed, "I didn't expect it to be Coach Luo Qixing..."
"Coach Luo Qixing? I don't know him, who is he? Is he a strong coach...?" Our whole team exchanged glances, unsure. "He is my mentor. Last season (010011 season), he coached the Jin Free Walkers Team in the bl (National Men's Basketball Intercity League) and won the championship. He also achieved a three-peat in 0911. I heard that five BA teams approached him this year, but he politely declined them all. I didn't expect him to come coach high school basketball..." Teacher Qiu looked towards Luo Qixing and walked over to him, calling out, "Mr. Luo!" We all stood there stunned; it turned out they had such a complicated relationship! Well! Let's continue training; honestly, I'm very excited because competing against a top national coach is particularly thrilling. Today our Yulin High School will face this championship coach!
With the referee's whistle, the game officially began. The opposing team sent out their starting five who were about our height. Teacher Qiu faced off against their two super rookie reinforcements among their starting five. One seemed to be their Shooting Guard, named Kobe. A knockoff Kobe, but shorter than the real one; I estimated his height to be just over 1.8 meters, about my height. The other was their forward named Zhou Wenming, standing around 1.88 meters tall, only slightly shorter than 1.90-meter tall Li Kanglin. We were all eager for a good match!
The referee designated Zhang Jun and Zhou Wenming for the opening jump ball. The ball was tipped to my hands; I dribbled directly into the free-throw line position and quickly passed it back to Zhongqi Senior. From the arc's top, Zhongqi Senior shot and scored. I ran over to high-five him as he joked in my ear, "So who is really the Point Guard and who is the Shooting Guard, haha!" I replied, "We're both the best swingmen, hehe." After the opposing team inbounded the ball, their Point Guard dribbled past half court and passed it to Kobe. I stepped up to guard him as he swiftly ran to the right wing for a shot. I sprinted over for a block but was faked out by Kobe, who then took his shot and scored. As we returned to inbound the ball, we exchanged glances; I was becoming more interested in this Kobe.
We ran back for our inbound play; after bringing the ball up front, Zhongqi Senior passed it back to A Fei. As Kobe helped defend against Zhongqi Senior, he nearly caused a turnover. However, A Fei received the pass and assisted on an alley-oop for Bing Ge. "Thirteen Middle School, you're strong but we're not weak either."
Teacher Qiu signaled for a timeout and substituted out A Fei, bringing in Zhang Jun, as he had an advantage in height over A Fei. When they came back on court, their Point Guard was replaced by Kobe, while their new player took on the role of Shooting Guard. A mismatch strategy? What move is Coach Luo Qixing making here? After we inbounded the ball again, Zhongqi Senior brought it across midcourt and entered beyond the three-point line facing off against Kobe. He took a long-distance shot but was nearly blocked by him; however, relying on his rich game experience, he regained possession of the ball without shooting and then cut inside for an easy layup with help from Li Kanglin.
Our game reached a boiling point in the second quarter's latter half; although both Kobe and Zhou Wenming were fearless rookies, they lacked experience compared to seasoned players like Zhongqi Senior. Thus we maintained a tight scoreline thanks to our experienced gameplay. With two minutes left before halftime, Coach Luo Qixing called a brief timeout. After returning to court, the players from Thirteen Middle School changed tactics entirely, combining fast breaks with set plays that caught us off guard with a surge of 70 points. This unexpected turn left us trailing behind at halftime with a score of 46-5.
Once we entered the locker room, Teacher Qiu sighed, "Mr. Luo's tactical arrangements are still so unpredictable that it's hard to counter..." He helplessly remarked. "Coach, I can guard against Kobe," said Zhongqi Senior, looking down calmly. "I can stop Zhou Wenming too..." added Zhang Jun. "Alright team, we can't just compete with them on fast breaks; we need to pressure them from all angles," said Teacher Qiu, beginning to lay out our strategy for the second half. Who will emerge victorious in this intense battle between teacher and student? We truly do not know yet.
As the second half began, we intensified our defense and offense inside the paint; their two interior players became virtually nonexistent against both Li Kanglin and Bing Ge, who dominated them repeatedly. Without hesitation, Luo Qixing called another timeout to reconfigure their strategy. Upon returning from timeout, Coach Luo surprisingly assigned Zhou Wenming to play as power forward while moving another player originally playing that position to small forward—another mismatch strategy? This Coach Luo Qixing truly does not play by conventional rules!
