After a quick throw-in, Zhongqi Senior launched a fast break. After crossing half court, they charged straight to the basket but were met with a double team. The ball was passed back to Ouyang, who took another shot from beyond the arc and scored! 994! With thirteen seconds left in the game, we had narrowed the score down to two points again, and we saw a glimmer of hope. After a quick throw-in by Thirteen Middle School, Kobe held the ball to run down the clock. Zhongqi Senior attempted to foul him, but unfortunately, they didn't have enough fouls and could only give up an out-of-bounds throw-in.
After the opponent's throw-in, Ouyang rushed in and fouled again. This time, they had reached the limit for fouls. With eight seconds remaining in the game, Kobe stepped up to the free-throw line. He took a deep breath and released the ball—swish! The lead was now three points. I furrowed my brows tightly as I watched everything unfold on the court; I felt like I was suffocating. Kobe took a deep breath and shot again, but it bounced off the rim! Zhang Jun, Bing Ge, and Li Kanglin rushed in for the rebound. After Bing Ge grabbed it, he passed it to Zhang Jun, who sprinted toward our front court. Zhongqi Senior caught the ball at the top of the arc and shot just as time expired. I stared at the hoop without blinking—the ball bounced off the rim! We lost! This meant we ultimately fell to Thirteen Middle School at home with a score of 995, suffering our first defeat of the season while also relinquishing our top spot in the league.
Thirteen Middle School didn't celebrate excitedly; they walked calmly toward the locker room. For some reason, we weren't too dejected; it felt like we had just lost one game and there would be more opportunities ahead. Once inside the locker room, Zhongqi Senior spoke first, encouraging us not to be discouraged. The round-robin phase was over, and we still had three more games to play. Back in class, I felt much more downcast than usual. Shuai Dong and his friends noticed our mood and came over to pat us on the shoulder: "It's okay! Winning or losing is part of sports; we'll win it back next time!" I turned to look at Shuai Dong and felt warmed by his words. "Shuai Dong, I promise I'll win back our next game!"
After finishing my homework at home, my parents surprisingly rewarded me with an hour of computer time. I initially wanted to play NBA or Crossfire, but suddenly lost interest. When I logged onto QQ, very few people were online, so I went invisible. I noticed Ya's signature had been updated: "I miss you so much, but you never think of me..." Reading that made me feel a bit heartbroken. Am I really such a fickle person? I've hurt two wonderful girls' feelings at once.
After lying down for a while and feeling quite troubled, I told my parents that I wanted to go out for a walk alone. Walking alone on an empty road with few people around felt lonely. "I wander in this world, unable to find your hall; east vase west mirror makes me hate that I cannot forget..." I hummed softly as I prepared for our next home game against Shinan High School. Although we were determined to win, after being struck down by Thirteen Middle School's defeat, I felt apprehensive. We were already second-year students; next year Zhongqi Senior's main players like Zhang Jun and Bing Ge would no longer be around. By then, it would be up to me, A Fei, and Ouyang to take on more responsibility. This year our playing time has doubled; this must be Teacher Qiu preparing us for our future team dynamics. Next season should revolve around us three as core players; starting now we need to learn how to become leaders of a team.
As I walked past an anime shop, I noticed a counterfeit "O'Brien" trophy on display. Intrigued, I went inside and picked it up; it was made with a 1:1 ratio of the original design and was very finely crafted and realistic—though made from thin aluminum so it was quite light.
"Boss, how much is this trophy model?" I decided I wanted to take it home with me. The owner was a bearded guy wearing a baseball cap who looked about twenty-seven or twenty-eight years old. "Oh, you like this trophy too? Looks like you're also a basketball fan! Just earlier today a boy about your age came in looking at it too; it's his dream," said the bearded shopkeeper. "Then why didn't he take it?" I asked curiously. The shopkeeper replied: "He actually wanted a real NBA championship O'Brien trophy—not just a model—so he put it down and left." Listening to him made me ponder who that person might be; soon after that thought crossed my mind, I dismissed my desire to buy it and walked out—this owner had effectively talked me out of making an easy sale.
The next morning on my way to school, I asked A Fei if he had ever been to that anime club; he hadn't. He then shifted the conversation to the NBA—due to last year's lockout there were only 66 games this season—so whether it's Hot Fire or Thunder winning the championship should come with some controversy regarding fairness. When we arrived at school’s entrance, I saw Zhao Bin's dad driving that Aston Martin again to drop him off for school. Every time Zhao Bin got out of the car there were always several female classmates coming over to flirt with him; yet Zhao Bin always ignored them without even giving them a glance—it was such an impressive attitude that felt pretty cool! A Fei and I casually walked over with smiles on our faces as I asked Zhao Bin how things were going with Ding Fang. Zhao Bin smiled back saying their relationship was stable; seeing him like this made me happy for him too. I wondered how Situ Jianfei was doing when suddenly his sister Situ Yanan ran over: "Brother Jie! A Fei! Long time no see!" She patted us on our shoulders while I scratched my head: "I think we saw each other just yesterday after school..." "Yeah! It's been almost an entire night since we last saw each other!" Situ Yanan quickly replied. Zhao Bin playfully pinched Situ Yanan's nose: "Hey girl, why don't you call me Bin Ge instead?" Situ Yanan made a face at him: "Hmph! Bin Jie! How can I call you brother? You're my older sister!" Later on, I learned that Zhao Bin and Situ Yanan were classmates who got along well like close friends—almost like family now.
