On the way home, Xiao Li stayed close to Xiao Jing, constantly glancing around with a sense of unease.
"I still think you're just overthinking and seeing things..." Xiao Jing said with a hint of exasperation as she slowly dragged along a burden.
"It's true! I really saw it!" Xiao Li insisted, still shaken.
"Well, since it can move, that means it's not a restless spirit. As long as we wait for it to go where it wants and leave your vicinity, you shouldn't see it again, right?" Xiao Jing said optimistically.
"That's... a fair point," Xiao Li conceded a bit. "I can only hope that thing leaves my line of sight soon."
Finally back in their residential community, the two parted ways.
"Thank you so much for today, Xiao Jing. Bye-bye, see you tomorrow!"
Once home, Xiao Li collapsed onto the living room sofa in exhaustion.
To be honest, although she had often seen strange apparitions in the past, she had never experienced anything like this where the same image kept appearing repeatedly.
She hadn't encountered anything unusual lately or picked up anything strange; why was this happening?
"I hope I'm not being haunted by something bad..." she murmured to herself.
As she prepared to leave for school in the morning, Xiao Li suddenly stood in front of her apartment building, her body stiff as she stared at the entrance of the community, frozen in place.
Just a moment ago, although it was only a fleeting glance, she seemed to have seen— that shadow, standing right in front of the guardhouse at the community entrance...
"…But the guard didn’t notice anything unusual, right?" In the classroom, Xiao Jing listened with some exasperation as the shaken Xiao Li recounted her encounter from that morning.
"But it’s also possible that guy was slacking off and dozing off, so he didn’t see it!" Xiao Li said, her voice trembling.
"Well… looking on the bright side, maybe it was looking for other residents in the community, so you don’t need to panic so much," Xiao Jing replied calmly.
"No, I think it was coming for me; otherwise, why could only I see it?" Xiao Li exclaimed in distress.
"Weren’t you saying you can see all sorts of things? If that’s the case, isn’t it normal for you to see it?" Xiao Jing said dismissively. "Besides, have you made any enemies recently? Or picked up something strange? Or gone exploring in any haunted places?"
"No! None of that!" Xiao Li insisted firmly. "It’s precisely because there’s nothing that I feel wronged! What does this have to do with me? Why is it fixated on me?!"
"So, it’s also possible that your self-awareness is too high; it might be looking for someone else and not you. You should worry less about this," Xiao Jing maintained her calm demeanor.
"Um…" Although she felt that Xiao Jing had a point, Xiao Li still felt uneasy.
"How about this? Do you know any temples where you could go to calm your nerves and seek some protection? Maybe that would help," Xiao Jing suggested.
"…Do you have any recommendations?" Xiao Li asked hopefully.
"Honestly, no, because I don't believe in those things," Xiao Jing admitted. "But I remember there's a temple nearby that serves as a local center of faith. The incense offerings are quite good. How about we go ask after school?"
"Will you come with me?" Xiao Li looked at her with pleading eyes.
Xiao Jing sighed helplessly.
"Alright, alright. Since you've dragged me into this, I might as well accompany you to the end."
