Lin Wan quickly waved her hand, saying, "General, you are too kind. If it weren't for your rescue, I would have long since met my end." The two exchanged smiles, and the atmosphere lightened considerably.
However, after this incident, Lin Wan's situation in the Jing'an Marquisate did not improve. Instead, due to Gu Chengyu's attention, her stepmother Li grew suspicious and began to make things difficult for her. Li often whispered in the Prefect's ear, claiming that Lin Wan was having an affair with Gu Chengyu and tarnishing the the Su Family's reputation. The Prefect, who already favored Li, treated Lin Wan with even more disdain after hearing these accusations.
One day, while Lin Wan was in her courtyard preparing medicine, Chun Tao rushed in with a pale face. "Miss, it's bad! Old Madam wants you in the front hall; she says there's something important to announce." A sense of foreboding filled Lin Wan's heart as she set down the medicine pot and followed Chun Tao to the front hall. There sat the Prefect and Li in their high seats, accompanied by a middle-aged man dressed extravagantly, his eyes glinting with a hint of lewdness.
"Lin Wan, this is Yuanwai Wang," the Prefect began, his tone impatient. "He is wealthy and has only one son of similar age to you. Yuanwai Wang wishes to ally with our the Su Family through marriage. I have already agreed to this union; you will pack your things tomorrow and marry into the Wang family."
Lin Wan felt as if struck by lightning, staring incredulously at the Prefect. "Father, I am already promised to the Jing'an Marquis Mansion; how can I be married off so casually? Moreover, I have no romantic involvement with General Gu; this marriage cannot proceed."
Li sneered. "You foolish girl, how can you be so ungrateful? The Jing'an Marquis Mansion has long lost interest in you; why do you still cling to that engagement? Yuanwai Wang is willing to marry you; that is your good fortune. Don't embarrass yourself here."
Fury coursed through Lin Wan's body as she trembled with anger. Just as she was about to retort, the Prefect slammed his hand on the table and said sternly, "This matter is settled. If you dare oppose it again, do not blame me for being harsh." With that, he waved his hand dismissively, signaling for the servants to take Lin Wan away.
Back in her room, Lin Wan sat on her bed, tears streaming down her face uncontrollably. She knew this was all Li's scheme to drive her out of the the Su Family so that her own daughter could marry the legitimate heir of the Jing'an Marquis Mansion. But as a weak woman in this feudal era, how could she resist?
Just when she felt utterly helpless, Chun Tao suddenly had an idea. "Miss, why don't we seek help from General Gu? He saved you last time; perhaps he would be willing to assist you again." Lin Wan's eyes lit up as if grasping a lifeline. However, Gu Chengyu was a high-ranking general; why would he bother himself with the troubles of a mere Prefect's daughter?
After much hesitation, Lin Wan decided to give it a try. That night she wrote a letter detailing her predicament and earnestly requested his help. The next morning, she had Chun Tao secretly deliver the letter out of the estate.
The waiting days were long and torturous; Lin Wan lived in constant fear that Yuanwai Wang would send someone to fetch her. Just when despair was about to consume her, Gu Chengyu finally sent someone. It was his deputy who brought word: "Miss Su need not worry; the General has petitioned Your Majesty on your behalf regarding your engagement with the Jing'an Marquis Mansion. A decree will be issued shortly."
Upon hearing this news, Lin Wan felt both touched and overjoyed. She never expected Gu Chengyu would be so righteous as to seek royal approval for her sake. She knew that with an imperial decree in hand, Li and the Prefect would no longer dare to dispose of her at will.
