Liang Fei ordered someone to splash water on Xu Mu Cong to wake him up.
Xu Mu Cong jolted awake, glancing around before his eyes landed on the woman on the high platform. She was dressed extravagantly, adorned with a golden hairpin, and as she raised her delicate hand to stifle a yawn, she leaned lazily against the imperial concubine chair. Two palace maids beside her bowed their heads, fanning her gently.
She appeared to be around twenty years old, with flawless skin and a gaze that was cold and detached, as if she were above the mundane world. Her noble aura commanded respect without her needing to raise her voice. With just one glance at Xu Mu Cong, he felt a shiver run down his spine, realizing that this woman was not simple.
Her phoenix eyes seemed calm and unruffled like an ancient well, yet they revealed an undeniable sharpness and ruthlessness. Before she even spoke, Xu Mu Cong hurriedly bowed.
“Greetings, Your Highness.”
Hearing this, Liang Fei's lips curled into a slight smile that was neither warm nor welcoming. Her voice was enchanting yet forbidding. “How do you know who I am?”
Xu Mu Cong forced himself to appear calm, daring not to look directly at her as he replied, “At first, I thought you were some noble lady from a prominent family. However, seeing the grandeur of this hall and your extraordinary demeanor, it is clear you are of much higher status than any ordinary young lady. I only dared to guess and hope for your forgiveness.”
“Oh? A silver-tongued flatterer,” Liang Fei remarked without showing any pleasure from his compliments. Instead, she got straight to the point. It wasn't that she was straightforward; it was simply unnecessary to waste words in front of Xu Mu Cong. She only wanted to know what she needed.
Understanding her intent, Xu Mu Cong realized that there was only one princess in Great Yu—Princess Wen Liang—and he answered accordingly.
“Your servant is guilty; I have wronged the princess during our journey back. However, it was unavoidable at the time; I hope for Your Highness's forgiveness.”
He skillfully avoided mentioning his role in helping the princess escape, instead focusing on how difficult the journey had been for Wen Liang. But Liang Fei, having seen countless people, could easily see through his little ploy and snorted coldly.
“Hmph! You are indeed guilty. Speak! What is your purpose in approaching the princess?”
Xu Mu Cong's heart trembled at her words, but he continued to feign ignorance.
“Your Highness, please forgive me; I did not know the princess's identity beforehand and had no ill intentions. I beg for Your Highness's understanding.”
Liang Fei narrowed her eyes and ordered someone to take Xu Mu Cong away for execution. Regardless of his intentions, if he refused to speak, there was no need for her to know; dead men tell no tales.
Xu Mu Cong did not expect Liang Fei to be so unyielding and wondered if she intended to intimidate him. However, he did not dare take that chance and begged for mercy repeatedly as Liang Fei's displeasure became evident.
“Get rid of him quickly; this palace finds him tiresome.”
Upon hearing this, Xu Mu Cong quickly pondered his options as he realized Liang Fei was indeed intent on executing him. Just then, a bright and cheerful voice broke through the tension.
"Today, Sister-in-law's place is quite lively; it seems I’ve come at the wrong time."
Prince Xiao Xuan entered with bright eyes and an innocent smile, waving a folding fan. Behind him trailed a palace maid and a eunuch, both looking troubled as if they had failed to stop him.
At the sound of his voice, Liang Fei paused, a flicker of doubt crossing her eyes. She turned around, instantly adopting a warm and amiable demeanor.
"Oh? What brings you here today, little brother? Did the Emperor summon you?"
Liang Fei hurried over, gesturing for the attendants to take Xu Mu Cong away. However, Prince Xiao Xuan turned to Xu Mu Cong, playfully stepping forward.
"What a handsome young man! How could Sister-in-law have such a charming young man in her palace? Could it be that Sister-in-law is hiding something…?"
"Little brother! You mustn't speak carelessly; he is… he is…"
Liang Fei knew that Xiao Xuan was notoriously blunt. While his jesting was harmless for the moment, she feared the implications if word got out. The attendants were utterly useless; they had failed to prevent anyone from entering at this critical moment. With the conversation already spiraling out of control, there was no way to dismiss Xu Mu Cong now.
Her mind raced as she felt a rare sense of urgency. She was contemplating what identity to assign to Xu Mu Cong when Prince Xiao Xuan spoke again.
"Oh~ I see now; could he be Wen Liang's Consort?"
With that, he looked at Liang Fei, wearing an innocent expression. His smile revealed beautiful crescent-shaped eyes, but beads of sweat formed in her palms.
"Ah… no, he is entangled with Wen Liang. Since she is still young, this palace fears she might be deceived, so I brought him into the palace to assess his character. Hehe, it’s all rather vague; I didn’t want you to overthink it, so I didn’t mention it."
Seeing Prince Xiao Xuan nodding along, Liang Fei felt relieved and quickly instructed her attendants.
"Why aren’t you taking the young master out of the palace yet?"
She signaled to the young eunuchs but was interrupted by Prince Xiao Xuan once more.
"Wen Liang, is it?"
Startled, Liang Fei glanced outside and saw Wen Liang entering with red-rimmed eyes. Rushing forward upon seeing Xu Mu Cong about to be dragged away, she exclaimed,
"What is Mother doing? Everything is my doing alone; it has nothing to do with Young Master Xu. I beg you to let him go."
Meanwhile, Prince Xiao Xuan watched the scene unfold with an unchanging smile, his eyes glinting with amusement. Liang Fei stole a glance at him and frowned; every encounter with him seemed to bring trouble. Whenever he spoke, her heart raced in fear.
Known for his playful nature and disregard for others' fates, if not for the Emperor allowing him free access to the harem, Liang Fei wouldn’t have to see this little tyrant so often.
For some reason, while he might occasionally tease others, there was never anything about him that brought joy to Liang Fei. Thus, she wished she could avoid this little troublemaker altogether.
As soon as Liang Fei saw him arrive today, she knew that nothing good would come of it, and she couldn't help but feel a headache coming on. All she wanted was to quickly send Prince Xiao Xuan away. When Wen Liang pleaded for him, she could only agree to casually brush it off, but little did she expect that Prince Xiao Xuan seemed to be a calamity for her.
"This young man is quite pitiful. Why not let your sister-in-law fulfill their wishes? How about I act as the witness for their marriage?"
"Witness?!"
Everyone present, except for Prince Xiao Xuan, was utterly shocked. Wen Liang stood frozen in place, while Xu Mu Cong quickly knelt down and spoke up.
"The Villain has fallen in love with the princess at first sight and vows to marry no one but her. If the princess is willing, the Villain will devote himself entirely to her and ensure she suffers not even a bit of hardship. Even if the Empress forbids it, the Villain would still be content just to stay by the princess's side and watch over her!"
His heartfelt words touched Wen Liang's heart. At that moment, she felt that regardless of whom she was destined to marry, she hadn't yet decided whether to truly agree to this proposal.
Liang Fei immediately rejected it. "No!"
Realizing her outburst, Liang Fei smiled and continued, "What I mean is that such an important matter as marriage cannot be treated so hastily. If—"
Before she could finish her sentence, Wen Liang raised her head and interrupted her with a hint of determination in her eyes.
"I am willing! Please trouble my uncle to witness our marriage!"
"Wen Liang! Do not speak recklessly!"
