On the third day of the seventh month, we finally arrived at Survival Island.
The weather had been gloomy for the past few days. It was said that a treasure buried long ago by a princess as part of her dowry lay hidden on the island, but whether it was true or not remained a mystery. What challenges awaited us in the coming days?
I closed my diary and casually set my suitcase aside before comfortably lying down on the bed in the inn.
At that moment, the door swung open with a loud bang. My classmate, Wu Wenting, walked in.
“Don’t look so glum! The survival skills challenge is the day after tomorrow, and we can’t lose to the other teams!” Wenting exclaimed as she patted my shoulder.
“Hmph! As if I wanted to come to this godforsaken place. If it weren’t for you…” I sulked, closing my eyes in frustration.
It was Wenting who had dragged me into participating in this survival skills challenge game, aimed at honing our survival abilities on the island. Any team that could endure for the specified time would be deemed successful.
Survival Island, also known as Treasure Island, was a remote isle surrounded by sea. The island boasted a dense forest, and at its center lay a charming little pond. Legend had it that a beautiful princess once set sail to marry but tragically ran aground near this island, surviving alone.
She left her treasure behind on the island, turning it into a hotspot for treasure hunters. Strangely enough, this little island had an unusual climate; it was almost perpetually harsh, making it quite challenging to survive here for even a few days. Hence, it earned its name—Survival Island.
“I really don’t understand why we chose to come at this time; it’s both hot and stuffy,” I complained again.
“You just don’t get it! Summer by the sea is so refreshing! More importantly…” Wenting hesitated, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. “In a few days, it’ll be Qixi Festival. Being here with you feels special.”
“Hey, someone else has arrived! I’m going to check it out!” Hearing the innkeeper’s call, Wenting turned and dashed out of the room. I quickly followed her.
The innkeeper, Gong Xi, was a plump middle-aged man in his forties. True to his name, he appeared very amiable and was always cheerful.
Standing beside him was his niece, Xiao Xin, the only staff member at the inn. Most visitors brought their own necessities and food when they came here, so one staff member sufficed.
Xiao Xin was a delicate-looking girl who was quite shy; she would blush whenever she spoke to strangers. I had tried to strike up a conversation with her earlier, but as soon as I spoke, she turned red and hurried away.
"Welcome, welcome! Please come in!" The owner opened the door and invited the guests inside. Along with him entered six people—four men and two women—who were mostly around the same age as A Liang.
"Come on, let us help you with your luggage!" A Liang and Wen Ting were friendly and familiar, especially since the newcomers were all participants in the challenge, making them feel even more like one big family.
These participants had met online before and received invitations to join this event.
After settling their luggage, everyone gathered in the small dining area of the inn to chat.
The so-called inn was just a two-story building. The first floor was for the owner and Xiao Xin to live in, while the second floor housed the guest rooms.
A Liang and his friends were staying on the second floor. Right next to this two-story building was a smaller bungalow, which served as the dining area.
"Wow, it's so beautiful!" Wen Ting exclaimed excitedly.
On the wall hung a stunning collection of gemstone pendants—twelve in total—each intricately carved with different zodiac patterns. What was most remarkable was that each pendant was made from a different material.
"This... this is..." A Liang shivered in surprise as he looked at the pendants featuring designs of lions, aquariums, and other zodiac signs.
Suddenly, a glint caught his eye, causing him to instinctively step back and bump into a tall guy behind him.
"Watch it there, classmate," the tall guy said as he steadied A Liang. He then introduced himself, "Hello everyone, I'm Liang Xueli, an intern doctor. If anyone has any headaches or ailments, feel free to ask me. I always carry treatment medications and tools with me to help out. Also, I'm a detective enthusiast. I hope we can all improve together during this survival challenge!"
"By the way, Liang Xueli, what's your zodiac sign?" Wen Ting asked.
"I'm a Sagittarius," Liang Xueli replied with a smile.
"You like studying zodiac signs? I do too! Sagittarius is optimistic and lively, always active but sometimes a bit restless..."
A beautiful girl with big eyes said, "The zodiac signs are indeed quite accurate; they can reflect different people's personalities and their potential criminal psychology. But this set of pendants is really magnificent; it’s truly a treasure. Look, each pendant corresponds to the zodiac's lucky gemstone."
As she spoke, she traced her fingers along the sequence of pendants, explaining one by one. "This one is Amethyst, the lucky stone for Aries, and it even has a cute little ram carved on it; this is Yellow Quartz for Taurus; next is Emerald for Gemini; and if I’m not mistaken, this one should be Opal."
"Libra?" Wen Ting interjected.
"Yes, it should be. There’s indeed a scale on it, but..."
The girl with big eyes hesitated for a moment before continuing to count, "Ruby for Leo; Peridot for Virgo; White Crystal for Cancer; Garnet for Scorpio; Yellow Sapphire for Sagittarius; Purple Agate for Capricorn; Lapis Lazuli for Aquarius; and Aquamarine for Pisces."
"You seem to know quite a bit about this. I don't believe in these things; I only trust reasoning and evidence, but these ornaments are indeed quite beautiful," said a long-haired beauty.
"By the way, I'm Sun Miaoyan, a biology major with some research in chemistry and forensic science."
After a round of self-introductions, A Liang learned that among the others, there was a handsome young man named Wang Gang, a Taurus who seemed very deep-minded. Just by looking at his build, one could tell he was good at sports. Another well-dressed guy named Xu Renbin was a Scorpio; he appeared to have attended such events frequently in the past and seemed experienced. It looked like he was friends with both Wang Gang and Liang Xueli.
There was also a boy wearing glasses who spoke little and looked like a studious type named Ling Song, an Aries who seemed to know Sun Miaoyan. Lastly, the girl with big eyes was younger than everyone else; her name was Yan Rongrong, a Cancer who was gentle and sentimental.
Unlike A Liang and Wen Ting, these travelers seemed quite well-equipped. Especially the boys, who wore camouflage clothing and long boots even in the hot weather and carried various outdoor gear like knives, ropes, water bottles, and military knives—clearly seasoned adventurers. The two girls also brought ample supplies.
By this time, evening had fallen. Xiao Xin distributed each person's room keys, and everyone gradually returned to their rooms to rest.
