"However, why is that shadow following you?" Xiao Jing asked, puzzled. "I clearly didn't see anything..."
"I don't know either, and besides, I didn't do anything..." Xiao Li replied, equally confused.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang.
"That's strange. Who could it be at this hour?" Xiao Jing wondered as she stood up and headed towards the entrance, with Xiao Li instinctively following her.
"Who is it?" Xiao Jing called out from the doorway, but there was no response from the person outside.
After a moment of hesitation, Xiao Jing instinctively moved closer to the door's Cat's Eye to look outside—
"Hey? Is the hallway light broken? It's completely dark out there."
At her words, Xiao Li suddenly shivered and quickly pulled Xiao Jing away from the door.
"Xiao Jing..." Xiao Li said, her face filled with fear as she stared at the closed Entryway Door.
Seeing Xiao Li's sudden strange behavior, it took a moment for Xiao Jing to realize what was happening. She silently pointed at the Cat's Eye—
The shadow was right outside the door.
The doorbell continued to ring in a steady, unhurried rhythm.
"Xiao Jing, what... what should we do..." Xiao Li clutched Xiao Jing's arm tightly, nearly in tears.
Xiao Jing stared at the Entryway Door for a while.
"Where's that talisman you had earlier?" she suddenly asked.
"Huh?" Xiao Li was momentarily taken aback and quickly pulled out the folded talisman from her pocket. "It's here... Do you want to use it?"
Xiao Jing took it and hurried to the kitchen, mixing some saltwater. Carefully, without damaging the runes, she dampened both ends of the talisman.
"What are you doing?" Xiao Li looked at Xiao Jing's actions with confusion.
Xiao Jing held the saltwater-dampened talisman and placed it over Cat's Eye.
The doorbell immediately stopped ringing.
"Huh? It worked!" Xiao Li exclaimed in surprise.
However, before they could celebrate, the doorbell rang again, this time sounding like a frantic death knell.
"Uh? Xiao, Xiao Jing..." Xiao Li looked at her in panic.
Xiao Jing frowned and remained silent for a moment before picking up the intercom and dialing the security office.
"Hello, Uncle Guard? This is a resident from Building A, Apartment 305. There's a strange person continuously ringing my doorbell. Could you come over and check it out?"
"Ah? Building A? Just a moment... Huh? The surveillance camera on your floor seems to be malfunctioning; I can't see any footage. I'll come over right away, but don't open the door!"
"Alright, thank you!"
After hanging up the intercom, the two exchanged a glance, gripping each other's hands tightly as they stood at the door, resolutely staring at the doorbell that rang incessantly.
Time seemed to stretch on endlessly until the haunting sound of the doorbell finally ceased.
In its place came a series of knocks.
"Hello, little sister, it's me, Uncle Guard."
Hearing the familiar voice, both of them finally let out a sigh of relief.
Xiao Jing cautiously lifted the talisman and peered through the Cat's Eye, confirming that it was indeed the middle-aged man they had encountered at the duty desk earlier. Only then did she feel reassured enough to open the door.
Outside stood the guard, wearing a relaxed smile.
"I just checked the entire floor and didn't find any suspicious individuals, so you can rest easy. However, if you encounter anyone you don't recognize, please don't open the door recklessly..."
Yet, at that moment when the door swung open, Xiao Jing and Xiao Li were left in stunned silence, completely oblivious to what he was saying—
Because behind him loomed a shadowy figure that was impossible to ignore…
