Qu Si Yang held the unconscious Xuan Yang tightly, her body trembling slightly, her eyes filled with endless fear and helplessness. She resembled a frightened fawn, looking around in panic, her heart brimming with terror at the unknown dangers surrounding her.
The air around them seemed to have solidified, heavy enough to make it nearly impossible to breathe. Each heartbeat felt like a heavy hammer striking a massive drum, producing a dull and oppressive sound that made her chest feel tight and her breathing labored.
The figures dressed in black appeared like malevolent spirits crawling out of a dark abyss, exuding a strong, nauseating scent of blood and an eerie aura of death.
They approached Qu Si Yang and Xuan Yang slowly and steadily, each step deliberate. Despite their footsteps being as light as a cat's, in this deathly silence, even the faintest sound felt like a death knell. With every step they took, Qu Si Yang's heart involuntarily constricted further.
"What should I do? What can I do? Xuan Yang, please wake up!" Qu Si Yang's voice became hoarse from extreme tension, tinged with a clear hint of tears.
Tears swirled in her beautiful eyes, threatening to spill over at any moment, yet she bit down hard on her lip, desperately holding back the urge to cry.
She knew all too well that crying would solve nothing at this moment; only by remaining strong could she hope to protect the unconscious Xuan Yang beside her.
Just when it seemed all hope was lost, a flash of blue light suddenly appeared before Qu Si Yang, slicing through the darkness like lightning.
"What is this..." Qu Si Yang widened her eyes in disbelief.
A figure stood before her, tall and upright like a pine tree, placing itself between her and Xuan Yang and the approaching black-clad figures.
That figure, that presence was so familiar that it eased Qu Si Yang's racing heart just a little.
"Xuan... Xuan Qing? Is it really you?" Qu Si Yang's voice trembled with surprise, confusion, and disbelief.
Xuan Qing did not respond but merely cast a cold glance at the encroaching figures in black. His gaze was as chilling as ancient ice, sending shivers down their spines.
He slowly extended his hand, the movement as gentle as caressing a lover's cheek. But in the next moment, an invisible force surged forth like a tempest, directly sending the black-clad men flying against the distant wall with a dull thud.
"Thud, thud..." One by one, the black-clad men fell to the ground like heaps of tattered burlap sacks. Some twitched a few times before falling silent, while others groaned in pain, the scene utterly tragic.
The leader of the black-clad men, a burly man with a grotesque scar across his face, was now filled with terror. His eyes widened as he stared fixedly at Xuan Qing, as if he were looking at some kind of monster.
"Who... who are you?" His voice turned sharp with fear, like a rusty saw scraping against nerves.
Xuan Qing ignored him and turned to look at Qu Si Yang. In his cold gaze, there was unexpectedly a hint of tenderness.
"Take him away from here, quickly." His voice was deep and powerful, carrying an undeniable authority.
Qu Si Yang nodded. She knew this was not the time for questions; she had to get Xuan Yang out of this dangerous place as soon as possible.
Carefully, she picked up Xuan Yang and turned to run towards the exit of the square.
Xuan Qing stood still, watching Qu Si Yang and Xuan Yang's retreating figures. A complex light flickered in his eyes—concern, reluctance, and a faint sense of relief.
"Shadow, you have ultimately lost." He spoke softly, his tone laced with mockery and disdain, as if addressing the air or perhaps an unseen enemy lurking in the shadows.
Then he turned to face the fallen black-clad men. His gaze became cold again, like death itself had descended.
"You all must die!" His voice rang out like a judgment from hell, each word dripping with murderous intent.
The leader of the black-clad men was terrified beyond measure. He struggled to rise, mumbling incoherently in a plea for mercy: "Please... don’t kill me... I..."
But it was already too late.
Xuan Qing's figure moved like a ghost among the black-clad men, his speed astonishing. With each strike, he claimed a life.
"Thud!" One black-clad man's throat was slit, blood gushing forth like blooming flowers of crimson.
"Crack!" Another black-clad man's neck was twisted, his head hanging at an unnatural angle.
"Ah!" One black-clad man was punched through the chest, his heart forcefully ripped out, still beating in the air.
Blood splattered everywhere, and screams echoed continuously; the entire square had turned into a bloody slaughterhouse.
The leader of the black-clad men was terrified, losing control of himself as he scrambled to escape this hellish place. However, a cold hand seized his throat.
"You... you can't kill me... I serve Lord Shadow..." he stammered, desperation filling his eyes.
"Shadow? Ha! He can't even save himself," Xuan Qing sneered, tightening his grip. With a sickening crack, the leader's neck snapped, his head drooping to the side, eyes wide open in death.
In the blink of an eye, all the black-clad men lay dead on the ground, their deaths gruesome and without a single survivor.
Xuan Qing stood in the center of the square, covered in blood like a Shura returned from hell. His gaze was hollow and numb, as if slaughter had become a part of his existence.
He looked up at the sky, a flicker of loneliness passing through his eyes, mingled with confusion and deep helplessness.
"Xuan Yang, I hope you can take control of your own fate and not repeat my mistakes," he murmured softly, his voice tinged with resignation and a sigh, as if speaking to Xuan Yang or perhaps to himself.
Then, his figure gradually disappeared into the air, as if he had never existed, leaving behind a ground strewn with corpses and a heavy stench of blood.
Qu Si Yang held Xuan Yang tightly and ran frantically until she reached a hidden cave.
Gently, she laid Xuan Yang down on the ground and sat against the cave wall, beginning to tend to his wounds.
"Ha... ha..." Qu Si Yang gasped for breath, beads of sweat covering her forehead, her clothes soaked through.
She looked at the unconscious Xuan Yang, her eyes filled with worry and heartache.
"Xuan Yang, you must be okay. You can't be in trouble," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion.
Xuan Yang's injuries were severe; his internal organs had suffered serious damage. If it weren't for Qu Si Yang's strong healing abilities, he would have likely succumbed long ago.
After some time spent treating him, Xuan Yang's condition finally stabilized, but there were still no signs of him waking up.
Qu Si Yang stayed by Xuan Yang's side, not leaving for a moment. Her eyes were fixed on him, afraid to miss the moment he would awaken.
Suddenly, Xuan Yang's body began to emit a faint golden light.
"What is this..." Qu Si Yang exclaimed in surprise, quickly stepping back a few paces and watching Xuan Yang warily.
The golden light grew stronger, eventually illuminating the entire cave as if it were daytime.
In the golden glow, Xuan Yang's body slowly rose, floating in mid-air. He kept his Dual Eyes tightly shut, his face devoid of any expression, resembling a statue—sacred and solemn.
Suddenly, his Dual Eyes snapped open, a golden light flashing within them, like two brilliant stars.
He looked at Qu Si Yang, a faint smile curving his lips. That smile was warm and bright, like sunlight breaking through the clouds.
"I'm fine," he said softly. His voice was weak yet filled with strength.
Seeing Xuan Yang awake, Qu Si Yang's heart soared with joy. Unable to contain her emotions any longer, she threw herself into Xuan Yang's arms, holding him tightly as she burst into tears.
"Woo… Xuan Yang, you’re finally awake! You scared me to death! I thought… I thought you…” She cried, gasping for breath as she spoke in broken sentences.
Xuan Yang gently patted Qu Si Yang's back, comforting her. "Silly girl, how could anything happen to me? I'm the man who will protect you for a lifetime."
He gazed at Qu Si Yang, his eyes filled with tenderness and love. In that moment, she was the only one in his heart.
"Thank you, Si Yang," he said softly. "Thank you for always being by my side, never leaving me."
Qu Si Yang lifted her head to look at Xuan Yang, her eyes brimming with happiness and emotion. She shook her head and replied, "Xuan Yang, I won’t allow you to say that. Everything I do for you is what I should do."
Xuan Yang looked at Qu Si Yang with love in his eyes. He lowered his head and gently kissed her forehead.
"Si Yang," he whispered.
The two embraced tightly as if trying to melt into each other. In that moment, time seemed to stand still; the whole world faded away until only the two of them remained.
Suddenly, a voice echoed in Xuan Yang's mind—a familiar yet strange voice.
"Xuan Yang, you’re awake."
Xuan Yang was startled and quickly asked, "Is that you, Dad? Where are you?"
"I am Xuan Qing," the voice replied.
"Xuan Qing?" Xuan Yang was taken aback. "My dad is Xuan Qing."
"I am not your father; I am Xuan Qing," Xuan Qing interrupted Xuan Yang. "I exist in another form."
"Another form? What do you mean?" Xuan Yang asked, confused.
"I am now just a remnant soul, attached to your golden finger, existing with you," Xuan Qing explained.
"Golden finger? What is my golden finger?" Xuan Yang was even more puzzled; he had never known he had a golden finger.
"Your golden finger is the Shadow Puppet," Xuan Qing answered. "It allows you to manipulate shadows, summon the Puppet Master, and possess great power."
"I see," Xuan Yang realized, recalling how he had used the power of shadows during the trials. That was his golden finger.
"But why are you attached to my golden finger? What do you want?" Xuan Yang asked, skeptical that Xuan Qing would help him for no reason.
"Because I need your help," Xuan Qing replied. "I need you to assist me in completing something very important."
"What is it?" Xuan Yang inquired.
"I want you to help me revive the statue," Xuan Qing replied, his voice tinged with seriousness.
"Revive the statue?" Xuan Yang was taken aback. "Why would we need to revive the statue? What makes it so special?"
"Because the statue seals my power, the power that belongs to the Puppet Master," Xuan Qing explained. "Only by reviving the statue can I restore my strength and completely eliminate the Shadows."
"But is there a cost to reviving the statue? Will it be dangerous?" Xuan Yang asked, concerned about the potential painful price he might have to pay.
"Of course there is," Xuan Qing answered. "The cost of reviving the statue is your life, or rather, a part of you."
Xuan Yang fell silent.
He was torn. On one hand, he wanted to help Xuan Qing eliminate the Shadows; on the other hand, he was reluctant to sacrifice his own life.
"Xuan Yang, you don't need to worry," Xuan Qing seemed to sense Xuan Yang's hesitation and reassured him. "I won't let you die. I will protect you; at least, I will do my best."
"Really?" Xuan Yang asked, still feeling uneasy.
"Really," Xuan Qing confirmed. "I will guide you and tell you what to do. I will protect you with all my strength."
Xuan Yang looked at Qu Si Yang, his eyes filled with affection and reluctance. He didn't know how to choose.
"Si Yang, I..." he began but struggled to find the right words.
"Xuan Yang, I believe in you," Qu Si Yang interrupted him, gripping his hand tightly with determination in her eyes. "Whatever decision you make, I will support you. I will always be by your side."
Xuan Yang looked at Qu Si Yang, his eyes filled with gratitude and emotion. He knew that Qu Si Yang was his strongest support.
“Thank you, Si Yang,” he said softly.
Then, he turned his head to gaze into the void, determination filling his eyes. He had made a decision.
“Xuan Qing, I promise you,” he declared loudly, “I will help you revive the statue, no matter the cost, I am willing to pay it.”
“Good! You truly are the one I have chosen,” Xuan Qing's voice was filled with satisfaction. “Very well, Xuan Yang, I will guide you. I will tell you how to proceed. Together, we will eliminate the shadows and save this world.”
Suddenly, the cave began to shake violently, debris falling from above as if it were about to collapse.
“What’s happening? Is there an earthquake?” Qu Si Yang exclaimed, gripping Xuan Yang's hand tightly, afraid he might leave her side.
“It’s the shadows,” Xuan Qing's voice was grave. “They are coming. They have discovered us; we must leave here quickly.”
“But where can we go? His minions are everywhere,” Xuan Yang said, feeling a wave of helplessness. Faced with the powerful shadows, he didn’t know what to do.
“Follow me; I know a place where we can temporarily evade the shadows' pursuit,” Xuan Qing said. “But we must hurry; time is running out.”
“Alright!” Xuan Yang nodded. He picked up Qu Si Yang and followed Xuan Qing's lead, running deeper into the cave.
