Three days later, Pei Guanjing and Ye Chen appeared at the dock in Jiangnan.
On that day, Lou Yu had left without anyone knowing when. Ye Chen had only slept through the morning, and when he came out again, Lou Yu had vanished without a trace. On the entire ship, aside from the boatman, there were only him, Pei Guanjing, and seven or eight attendants.
Although Pei Guanjing was no longer the powerful general wielding military authority, he had managed his affairs well over the years, opening numerous shops and even branches, establishing a business presence in Jiangnan. Upon learning that they would be settling in Jiangnan, Pei Guanjing immediately wrote letters to notify various places, relocating all the main stores to Jiangnan for better management, with the intention of raising Ye Chen and his yet-to-be-met son plump and healthy.
The streets were bustling with noise and excitement.
After disappearing for half a month, Ye Chen reappeared, accompanied by a handsome man. In no time, those who recognized him on the streets couldn’t help but ask, “Hey, Ye Chen, who is this…”
To avoid revealing his identity to Pei Guanjing and Lou Yu, he continued to use his original name and did not adopt the name Liu Chen.
Ye Chen smiled in response, glancing at Pei Guanjing, who looked somewhat awkward yet still gazed at him gently. With a slight upward curve of his lips, he teased, “Oh, he’s my chosen son-in-law.”
Ye Chen was strikingly handsome; even in his early twenties, he remained youthful and attractive. Some widowed or divorced men immediately thought of him and even sought matchmakers to connect them. However, during his first month in Jiangnan, Ye Chen rejected all matchmakers, claiming he did not wish to marry again but wanted to honor his deceased husband. Everyone considered him a rare good Kun Ze—someone who would keep vigil for their husband and not remarry—such a Kun Ze was hard to come by.
But as time passed, some men began to reconsider their interest in him. After all, who wouldn’t want such a good-looking Kun Ze at home? Thus, over the past two years, there were often suitors coming forward to propose marriage; they could hardly be driven away.
Upon hearing this, some older women began to gossip: “Young Master Ye Chen, didn’t you say you weren’t going to marry? How many suitors has Matchmaker Liu introduced you to? Even if you’ve been married before, you’re still quite handsome. With so many young masters seeking your hand in marriage, why did you settle for just a son-in-law? And this man…”
As their gazes shifted toward Pei Guanjing, he smiled faintly. His smile was as cold as frost yet elegant like moonlight, easily captivating hearts. Those who intended to provoke Pei Guanjing suddenly fell silent and found themselves at a loss for words.
It was no wonder Ye Chen chose such an attractive son-in-law while turning down so many suitors.
During these days at the health clinic, although Ye Chen was absent, Liu Jin understood the common prescriptions well enough that those seeking treatment could simply come for medicine. However, without a doctor on duty, there weren’t many visitors; only the wind chimes hanging at the door swayed gently in the breeze, producing a clear and pleasant sound.
As they entered the wellness hall, Liu Jin was holding Xiao Douya, teaching him how to play chess. The little boy, curious as ever, suddenly struggled to get down when he heard a noise by the door.
He then looked up in confusion at Pei Guanjing, who was standing next to Ye Chen.
Xiao Douya paused for a moment before quickly waddling over to Ye Chen, exclaiming excitedly, "Daddy, you're back!"
Pei Guanjing's eyes instantly welled up with tears. This was his and Ye Chen's child, all grown up now.
Liu Jin cleared his throat, and Pei Guanjing quickly bowed respectfully, saying, "Father-in-law."
Liu Jin scrutinized him for a long time before simply responding with a soft "hm," advising, "Now that you’re back, make sure to live well with Chen Er. Don’t think about things that don’t belong to you anymore."
"Yes," Pei Guanjing replied gently as he looked at Ye Chen holding Xiao Douya. He murmured, "I will stay by their side from now on and never leave them again. Thank you for taking care of them all these years, Father-in-law."
Liu Jin scoffed lightly, "Do I need you to say that about my own son? Stop rambling and let Lin Er recognize you sooner. He’s getting bigger and harder to coax."
Pei Guanjing turned to look at Ye Chen and the child in his arms, smiling as he reached out to hold him. Ye Chen's hand moved slightly as he prepared to pass Xiao Douya into Pei Guanjing's arms for their father-son reunion.
However, Xiao Douya clung tightly to Ye Chen’s neck without a second thought, refusing to let go. With a hint of a whimper in his voice, he said, "Daddy, are you going to sell me? Why are you trying to throw me into this handsome uncle's arms?"
Ye Chen's lips twitched. "He’s not a trafficker; he’s your father. Haven’t you been asking where your father is? Here he is."
Xiao Douya furrowed his little brows and began to scrutinize Pei Guanjing closely. After a long examination and glancing back at Ye Chen and Liu Jin to confirm they weren’t deceiving him, he finally extended a hand toward Pei Guanjing hesitantly and asked in confusion, "You... you are my... father?"
Pei Guanjing's eyes turned red as he nodded vigorously, his voice slightly choked, "Yes, I am your father."
Xiao Douya immediately began to struggle, wanting to jump into Pei Guanjing's arms. Ye Chen quickly released his grip and handed the child over to Pei Guanjing. This little guy was growing fast, changing every day, and holding him was quite tiring.
"You really are my father, then why did you only show up now? Other kids say I was picked up by my dad, so I don't have a father."
Xiao Douya's eyes were glistening with moisture, and as he spoke, tears began to well up in his eyes, looking like he was about to cry.
Liu Jin and Ye Chen exchanged a glance and knew that the little one was about to put on a show again; they turned away, pretending not to see. But Pei Guanjing had no idea that his son was already quite adept at this at such a young age. Just a few whimpers without actual tears nearly broke his heart.
"I'm sorry for leaving you, I won't leave you again," Pei Guanjing said with a face full of guilt, gently comforting him.
Xiao Douya's head, buried in Pei Guanjing's embrace, suddenly shot up. His eyes sparkled as he asked, "Really?"
Pei Guanjing smiled and nodded affirmatively, "Really."
Xiao Douya's little mouth curled into a smile as his eyes shone brightly towards the door. He exclaimed loudly, "Then you go tell the other kids that I have a father and I'm not just picked up!"
Pei Guanjing was taken aback for a moment before bursting into hearty laughter, responding loudly, "Okay!"
In the distance, Ye Chen and Liu Jin watched with smiles as Pei Guanjing lifted Xiao Douya high into the air.
