Liu Jin had left, and that night, Pei Guanjing finally stopped pretending. As the night deepened, he sat by Ye Chen's bedside, gazing at his peaceful sleeping face, while Xiao Douya nestled comfortably in the crook of his arm, a faint smile playing on his lips.
Pei Guanjing reached out and gently touched Ye Chen's fair, luminous cheek. The moment his cold fingertip made contact, Ye Chen stirred and opened his eyes, a shadow looming over him. He looked up to see Pei Guanjing sitting beside him, gazing at him tenderly while caressing his smooth cheek.
Ye Chen swatted his hand away, glanced at the still-sleeping Xiao Douya, pulled the blanket up a bit more, and then turned to Pei Guanjing, whispering, “What are you doing awake at this hour?”
“I can’t sleep,” Pei Guanjing replied.
“If you can’t sleep, does that mean you’re planning to keep me awake too?”
Pei Guanjing shook his head with a smile. “I wouldn’t dare.”
Ye Chen rolled his eyes, gently got up, maneuvered around Xiao Douya, and then got out of bed. He pulled Pei Guanjing into the courtyard and looked at him with displeasure. “What’s wrong with you now?”
Pei Guanjing wrapped him in his arms and leaned close to his ear, whispering, “Nothing much. I just feel that life is too beautiful right now, and I’m afraid it’s all a dream.”
At his words, Ye Chen relaxed his furrowed brow and lightly patted Pei Guanjing’s arm that held him. “Such days are hard to come by; they are indeed wonderful. But you can’t scare me like this in the middle of the night! Do you know how cold your fingers are? You’re making me…”
“Ugh…”
Pei Guanjing held him tightly around the waist with one arm while lifting his chin with the other. They shared a deep kiss that interrupted whatever Ye Chen had wanted to say.
Later that night, Pei Guanjing took Ye Chen to his storage room. Unsurprisingly, as they kissed passionately, Ye Chen complained about the mess around them. “You… should just sleep with me; Xiao Douya is getting old enough to sleep alone now.”
Unbeknownst to the soundly sleeping Xiao Douya, he had been forced by his father to grow up into a little boy who could learn to sleep in his own bed.
Ever since that fateful night when Ye Chen had foolishly let down his guard, he had been waking up around noon for several days straight. Fortunately, Pei Guanjing was considerate enough to cook for them, saving him from worrying about meals.
Xiao Douya was also sent off to a nearby private school where he wasn’t allowed to return until it was time. In the beginning, he struggled with the change but soon made new friends and quickly forgot about those little unpleasant moments.
Supporting his aching back and sore waist, Ye Chen found it difficult even to get out of bed. It was terrifying how long it had been since Tian Qian had indulged in meat!
Shaking his head, Ye Chen washed up and prepared to go to the front yard to open the door for patients when he realized that Pei Guanjing had already taken care of everything early on.
Just like back at the Military Camp, all he needed to do was lift the curtain and behold Pei Guanjing calmly taking pulses like a serene moonlit figure attending to others.
"How nice," Ye Chen murmured to himself. Perhaps this was the peaceful life he had always desired.
...
Pei Guanjing was very angry, but he couldn't express it in front of Ye Chen and everyone else.
Ever since that day when Ye Chen visited Ming Mansion, the young master of the Ming Family had come knocking, sharing a bed with Ye Chen while he was left alone in an empty room, feeling like a resentful husband.
For Tian Qian, who had been indulging himself without pause, this was undoubtedly a death sentence.
In the middle of the night, hearing some noise, he couldn't sleep. He just wanted to see what scheme Kun Ze, who had only met Ye Chen once, was plotting by entering their home.
What he didn't expect was that on the very first day, this person would reveal his intentions so eagerly.
Pei Guanjing had been observing Ming Xiting from behind the wall when, sure enough, another figure soon appeared in the courtyard.
The first thing that person said was immediately recognizable to him.
It was Lou Yu. Was he really so idle as the emperor that he would come knocking?
Pei Guanjing's eyes darkened. After confirming that Dark Guards were following Lou Yu in the shadows, he revealed two silver needles from his sleeve. Even though the poisoned silver needles could only hold Lou Yu for a moment, he planned to seize the opportunity to take Ye Chen and Xiao Douya away.
However, Lou Yu's next words made Pei Guanjing retract his hand.
These two were not working together; it seemed they did not know each other.
Sure enough, as soon as Ming Xiting turned around, Lou Yu knocked him out and took him away. He probably understood that meeting with a married man at night was a scandal not meant for outsiders.
Once he confirmed that everyone had left, Pei Guanjing quietly glanced toward Ye Chen's room, his lips pursed in indifference.
It had been over six months; why would Lou Yu suddenly show up? Could it be that Lou Yu had been secretly contacting Ye Chen without his knowledge?
With doubts lingering in his heart, Pei Guanjing strode into Ye Chen's room.
The summer heat was intense, and Ye Chen wore the small vest he had made for himself. In truth, he preferred not to wear anything at all, but with Ming Xiting present, he felt too shy to strip completely.
Inhaling the faint fragrance of Haitang, Pei Guanjing reached into the bedding and pulled Ye Chen out. Startled awake, Ye Chen, still in a daze, saw him and instinctively kissed his cheek before relaxing and drifting back to sleep. However, it didn’t take long for Ye Chen to realize something was off; wasn’t he supposed to be sleeping with Ming Xiting today?
His large doe-like eyes snapped open as he glanced around, not spotting Ming Xiting anywhere. He hurried to get out of bed to look for him, but Pei Guanjing swiftly grabbed his slender waist and pulled him back. “What are you looking for him for? He said it was too cramped to sleep together, so I’ve already arranged for him to sleep in Father’s room. It’s all set up.”
Hearing this, Ye Chen immediately sighed in relief, then glared at him. “Then why are you here instead of sleeping with Xiao Douya?”
Pei Guanjing lowered his head. He wasn’t sure if he should mention Lou Yu’s visit. Although he felt angry inside, he gently bit down on Ye Chen’s Heavenly Mandate, licking that spot repeatedly.
That night was destined to be nerve-wracking for Ye Chen.
He had no idea how he had provoked Pei Guanjing into marking him repeatedly like a madman. Even with others around, Pei Guanjing seemed unwilling to maintain even a shred of dignity.
Two months later, when he received a letter from Ming Xiting far away in the capital, Ye Chen finally understood.
It turned out the old man was jealous yet again.
By this time, he had already been pregnant for three months.
Thinking about this, Ye Chen, who had initially wanted to have a child, kicked Tian Qian beside him in frustration.
