The warm yellow light bathed the room, and the transparent glass windows let in a gentle glow, filling the air with a woody fragrance.
Perhaps it was the warmth of the air conditioning that made He Shuning feel her cheeks flush. She guessed they must be bright red. Pressing the back of her hand against her face, the cool touch jolted her back to reality.
Everything around her became as clear as if washed in water. She lifted her gaze and met the eyes of the person across from her, who was also looking at her.
His eyes shimmered with an orange-yellow light, and the rhythm in her ears was gradually calming to a soothing conclusion. In that moment, he looked at her and sang softly, “You are someone like the stars.”
She didn't know how others felt, but for her, he possessed an enchanting charm.
“Sister Ning! Sister Ning! I can't believe it! I'm so lucky! I'm going crazy! I just got to meet you up close! Wow, just thinking about it makes me so happy!” Mimi exclaimed, unable to contain her excitement, practically bouncing on her feet.
“Sister Ning, being your assistant is pure bliss! You are my lucky star.” She clasped her hands over her heart and gazed at He Shuning with wide, adoring eyes.
He Shuning sighed helplessly and lightly tapped Mimi on the forehead. “Sure, while I'm dying of nerves here, you're off fangirling.”
Mimi shook her head vigorously. “No, no! Sister Ning, I've never heard you sing before. The moment you opened your mouth was simply stunning! I was completely captivated. And you were singing that song—I'm even more lost in admiration!”
“Sister Ning, you don’t need to be nervous at all. You have no idea how beautiful you looked singing there. I even recorded it!” she said excitedly as she scrambled to find the video on her phone.
As they were looking through it, a voice interrupted from nearby.
“She’s not wrong.”
Both girls froze and looked up to see Lo Ye approaching with a jacket in hand. Their eyes met; his smile was gentle. Mimi felt shy and couldn't find her voice while He Shuning managed to stammer out a “Thank you.”
Meanwhile, Tongtong, hiding behind Lo Ye, kept winking at Mimi before turning back to He Shuning with an enamored expression.
“Goddess He, your singing is just as breathtaking! Now I have another reason to love you even more.”
He Shuning smiled at the little girl peeking out from behind Lo Ye and expressed her gratitude before glancing over at Lo Ye, who was watching her intently.
“Tongtong is right; she didn’t put on any fan filters, just speaking the truth.”
At this moment, she had said thank you so many times that she had lost count. Here, she had completely shed her original self and felt truly alive.
A new sense of awareness had emerged.
“Tonight, let’s all have dinner together. It’s a chance for us to get to know each other formally since we’ll be working together for a while,” Lo Ye said as he slipped on his jacket, glancing at He Shuning and waiting for her response.
As if recalling something, he asked, “Is it okay for us to have dinner privately? Do you have any rules about that?”
Mimi looked at He Shuning, wanting to say something but hesitating. She only heard He Shuning reply, “No, there are no rules.”
Lo Ye smiled, and Tongtong behind him jumped up in excitement. Lo Ye looked at her helplessly; the girl was simply overjoyed. “Go tell them.”
He then turned to He Shuning and spoke a bit shyly, “Tongtong really likes you. She was thrilled for several days when she found out she would be collaborating with you, but now that she’s met you, she’s shy again. The poor girl is quite hopeless.”
“She’s very cute, just like Mimi. Let’s take a group photo later as a keepsake. It’s my first time working in music,” He Shuning said as she brushed her hair back, immediately regretting it—was she being too forward? How unreserved of her.
He nodded in agreement. “We should definitely take a picture. We can hang one in our studio; it would be an honor.”
His eyes were smiling.
He looked at her with warmth.
Mimi stood by, watching the interaction between the two and felt as if pink bubbles of fantasy were floating all around her. She had participated in events with Sister Ning and other male stars before, but never had there been such an atmosphere. She thought back carefully—there hadn’t been a single one like this.
It wasn't that Sister Ning was unresponsive; rather, she simply never replied.
She had come to see a different side of Sister Ning, one that was vibrant and full of life.
Perhaps it was just their tastes, but the dishes that arrived were exactly what He Shuning liked to eat—foods that Sini usually forbade her from having. There were flavors she enjoyed, as well as light and healthy options. She looked around and noticed that hardly anyone was touching the spicy dishes, except for herself and Tongtong, who had tried a few bites. This coincidence made her think back to that night when she had met him.
Unconsciously, she glanced at the person across from her. He was picking at a plate of salad, the vibrant red dish untouched.
Mimi leaned closer to her and whispered, "Sister Ning, moderation! You can't eat too much of this; Sister Sini will kill me if she finds out."
She looked at the young girl beside her and smiled. "I'll try my best."
Mimi let out a silent groan before returning to her seat, her eyes still fixed on her.
During this meal, He Shuning felt incredibly happy, an indescribable joy filling her. When Da Zuo and the others came over to ask for a photo, she eagerly obliged. Even when Lo Ye scolded them, she happily posed for pictures and signed autographs, chatting with them about work.
Afterward, he no longer intervened but simply smiled as he watched everything unfold.
From morning until evening, the previous awkwardness and tension dissipated like smoke, allowing everyone to engage in light-hearted conversation. There was a sense of comfort and ease that felt long overdue.
