The two figures, running through the rain, noticed the presence of Jiang Shi and paused momentarily upon seeing the large number of people gathered.
"I am Li Fuxiu, the Chief of Police from Southeast Province. I know you two are not ordinary individuals. May I ask what brings you here?" Li Fuxiu spoke up, clearly stating his identity.
Typically, Martial Artists preferred to avoid conflict with the police.
"Heh, you police are meddling too much. We haven't done anything illegal. Are you going to interfere if we go hiking as well?" one of the men, a Slightly Overweight Black-Clad Man, replied coldly.
"It is precisely because you haven't committed any illegal acts that we can still have a civil conversation. However, your repeated late-night visits here raise suspicion. If you have no ulterior motives, do you think I would believe that?" Li Fuxiu said calmly.
"We're not bothering you; it would be wise for you to leave us alone. Otherwise, if this drags on, I won't mind letting you spend a night in the rain," the slightly overweight man said impatiently, his temper clearly flaring.
"Are you openly provoking the police? I advise you to come clean; otherwise, bullets don't discriminate. No matter how skilled you are, you're not faster than a bullet," Li Fuxiu's irritation began to show; it was frustrating that he couldn't assert his authority as Chief.
"Brother, these people are truly troublesome. Let's just take action," the Slightly Overweight Black-Clad Man said with an unfriendly tone.
The tall and thin black-clad man nodded in agreement.
Then, astonishingly, both men vanished from sight. Li Fuxiu and Jiang Shi's expressions changed drastically as they quickly positioned themselves back to back, shining their flashlights in all directions. Yet the darkness seemed to swallow the beams of light; even with twenty flashlights, they could not locate where the two men had gone.
Suddenly, a strange fragrance wafted through the air. Li Fuxiu and Jiang Shi inhaled it before they could react and soon felt dizzy; their vision blurred until they collapsed to the ground.
"These people are really a nuisance. Brother, should we just kill them?" the slightly overweight black-clad man said irritably.
"Don't complicate things further. In just one more day, tomorrow night we will achieve our goal. The Yin Tan has only produced that small amount of Yin Ling Zhi Jing in a century. Now let's focus on our task," the tall and thin black-clad man replied in a low voice.
With that, they ignored Li Fuxiu and Jiang Shi and used their skills to disappear into the rainy night towards Longan Pool.
What they did not expect was that although Jiang Shi had been affected by the drug, he was not completely unconscious; he merely felt weak and slumped on the ground while overhearing their conversation.
After they left, Jiang Shi struggled to stand up again, pinching pressure points and slapping his own face to wake Li Fuxiu and the others.
"Li Fuxiu, I think we should retreat and reconsider our options. Those two are too unpredictable. They must have used Mi Xiang on us; without gas masks, we were easy targets," Jiang Shi said with lingering fear, recalling how the overweight man had shown intent to kill earlier.
"Alright, let's hurry back. By the way, Jiang Shi, how come you're unaffected?" Li Fuxiu asked as he noticed everyone else was soaked and realizing they were no match for their opponents; he had no choice but to order a retreat while still puzzled by Jiang Shi's immunity to Mi Xiang.
"Li Fuxiu, I... I don't really know either. Maybe it's because of the talisman my daughter gave me," Jiang Shi replied uncertainly. Before coming out tonight, Jiang Jiewen had placed a talisman given by Jiang Chen into Jiang Shi's pocket. There had indeed been a strange force earlier that kept him alert.
